@thejaguar9 What you need to look for is (sorted by importance):
1. Pressure support - if it uses an EMR stylus than it probably has it. The tabletPC's that don't are usually touch-only and you should forget about those. You don't need touch support.
2. It needs to have at least 2 programmable buttons on their screen, because you will need them to zoom/pan/rotate the canvas like with the Cintiqs.
3. An AFFS (IPS) screen to ensure that the image looks the same from all viewing angles.
There is a thread about it on TabletPCReview forum. Yes, it's a little glossy but less reflective than other screens on the market because of it's polarized layer. Matte displays get less viewable outdoors and have more problems with colors. I have the outdoor version.
I have this Laptop and I don't know what the small door on the left side above the USB. It seems to me like a card reader but I don't know too much about cards, do you know what it's for?
It's an "expresscard". It can connect external units to the PCIe. In other words, you could connect a desktop graphic card and the 3D performance will increase enormously (could be 20 times or more)!
@10tothethird The eraser should work out of box, you only need to install additional drivers if you want pressure sensitivity. If the eraser doesn't work, try reinstalling the Lenovo pen drive which you should find on their web site.
let;s talk about the disadvantage which is really irritating me:
1) doesnt have SXGA+ which I hated it so much since the previous x61 has those option! really realy make a big diff!! 2)the design where they put the camera, I mean I put my laptop upside down but with the camera i cannot put it otherwise the camera would bear the weight im v disappointed. if i put on battery it doesnt rest that well.
3) no HDMI need to use stupid extension come on! HDMI is much smaller than big VGA port .
Do you want a big performance boost in your pc games?
You should overclock your graphics card. You just need to tweak some simple settings, and you will get a huge boost in the quality, and the speed of your games! Get the guide which tells you how to do it, 100% free, 100% safe from:
@Rani9000 Well, i I seem to have SW problems a lot just because of the core IBM SW is messing things up. It has a very plastic and cheap feel and my biggest disapointment is the speaker sound quality, which on Toshiba was crystal clear and here it sound cheap as 200 Eur laptops and having 2GB even with I7 is just not enough for me. Also, the pen is not as precise as with Toshiba. Yes, Toshiba is bulkier, heavier and has a louder fan, but you were holding top notch quality. Not the same with IBM
Thank you so much for the great review. I have a couple questions about the tablet. I am starting pharmacy school in the Fall and they suggest getting a tablet if possible. I enjoyed your demo on drawing with the tablet but I imagine I would be using it more for other things like taking lecture notes and annotating documents from the professors like word documents and power point presentations.
How easy would it be to perform these types of activities with this tablet?
Thanks for the review! I was looking for drawing sample video on these tablets. After several videos of nothing, I came across yours! Looks like there's a little delay in response time, while in PS CS4. This is one of the most important features for me, quick response while drawing. I'll take a pass on this model, but be looking for more reviews by you! TY again.
I am pretty sure this machine is a solid, durable one because all sales people in my previous company used the same machine and almost everyone of them loved it!
Hey Lisa, Thanks for the great review!! I just wanted to know if it had a CD drive built in, and if I could upload PDF files or slides and write over them with the stylus pen? thanks
@rhuneidi A DVD or CD Drive is not included in the X201 Tablet. You will have to buy a separate piece called ThinkPad X200 UltraBase in which an optical device is included. I think together they cost $250 more.
Thanks for the great review Lisa, it was great to see an example of the outdoor brightness option in action - very reassuring for people before they put down that extra money for the option!
I love Thinkpads, on my third one now but for the life of me I can't understand why Lenovo think it's acceptable to have off-centre screens as if it is the year 1992 or something.
Do you know when the next new Thinkpads are coming out?
One question: In your review you say there are three display choices. Now when I try to order the x201 online I only have two display choices, the Widescreen or the Multitouch. Do you know what happened to Outdoor version?
@panchamkauns Well, obviously, people might want this computer/tablet to replace an older computer, or as their first computer. (And, I've seen nurses use it to update medical records.) I agree though, it doesn't make sense to buy this machine if you're happy with the laptop you own now.
My question is about touch screen.I want to use the screen with the pen and while I am drawing I generally put my hand on screen.so I want to ask if the screen recognise my hand while using its pen?
Thanks for the excellent review, please could you tell me two things...
Is the display matte finish or glossy ?
Does the laptop heat up while in tablet mode...during light usage like reading and marking PDFs ? It will be a bit uncomfortable for me to write on if it heats up
@ruminanto It's matte finish. Lenovo doesn't usually do gloss. It doesn't heat up doing most tasks. We have more detailed info in our full review. Check it out!
@MobileTechReview You might want to recheck the prices. I just started shopping for a tablet and spec'd out a nice x201t for $1,440 direct from Lenovo.
@MobileTechReview i want to know its price but the price is different on every site.it's between 1600$-1999 dollars. Can you tell me the real price of this tablet?
Lisa....How did the screen auto-rotation work for you? Also, did you notice any screen wobble either front to back or side to side that may be excessive?
We are looking to upgrade our departments tablets PC's and I really appreciate the great review you have done on the X201. We are seriously looking at this computer and hope to get a demo model for field testing soon.
do you know anywhere I can get a tablet pc, I Live in Denmark and I have try'd to find some places that I could get one without succes and I really want one :(
hi, id like to as that if i get the model WITHOUT the multitouch function. what will i be missing out on? would it be very inconvienient? Also, is there anyway in which i can modify the computer so that it does have multitouch (programs, etc)? and if there is, how much will it cost?
Thanks for the great review. I travel a lot and this laptop is very portable yet powerful enough to be functional too. I probably wouldn't even notice the weight in my carry on luggage. I checked out your video first and you certainly highlight everything this device offers. Well done.
I've had an X61 for over 2 years now. Tablets are far superior to other laptops because they tend to be lighter, have better battery lives and the tablet functionality is wonderful for activities where you don't need to do a huge amount of typing, especially with reading activities. Once you get really good with the pen, it is probably a good 2 times as fast and efficient as using a mouse. Windows has great handwriting recognition and tablet applications also. Tablets are the wave of the future.
This has nearly everything I want except for 2 things: HDMI output and IEEE 1394 port. Seems like all laptops/tablets now should come with an HDMI port but it's not that big of a deal to me since I can get a VGA-to-HDMI cable. But the lack of IEEE 1394 is the only thing that's preventing me on going out and getting this since I have video and audio hardware that use 1394. I hope future models include this.
@yochayrofe I realized soon afterwards that yes I can get a firewire express card. But at the same time, I also found out there's no such thing as a VGA-to-HDMI cable. And there's also no such thing as an HDMI express card. So that's a deal-breaker.
Excellent review MobileTechReview! I'm thinking of picking this up and use mainly for photoshop CS5 and web. I'm a little concern that it might not run CS5 well since the system requirement for CS5 is 256MB ram of video graphic. What is the video ram on the x201t? Thanks in advance!
Why is the machine slow? Answer: The hard drive. The first thing anyone should do when buying a machine like this is to replace the darn slow hard drive with an SSD version. Format, leave off all of the junk and install the latest drivers.
@avinotion I won't own a laptop without one now. The Latitude XT suffered due to its crippled 1.8" HD which improved when I exchanged for an SSD. I also own an ARchos 9 which was awful until changing to SSD. The Lenovo probably also has a lot or rubbish installed along with a billion startup services. Usual oem stuff.
@avinotion If the machine is doing a lot of HD thrashing, certain functions of the machine will slow down but I see what you mean with regards to the delay. Updated drivers perhaps? I used to own a Tosh M750 which was near perfect for Stylus use.
it does have VGA. I assume they have VGA on the machine itself since it is more widely used than DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI. Probably for the same reason they still include modems in many of their ThinkPads.
I'm sure that this tablet is really well-built, knowing Lenovo's reputation for solid notebooks.
But why oh why did they have to use a TN panel for the screen? Back when Compaq made decent tablets (circa 2005) they used IPS screens which are still unrivalled to this very day. Those screens had excellent colour accuracy and virtually no contrast shift. They were absolutely perfect for the artist on the go.
It seems that every manufacturer these days uses crappy TN panels to cut costs. Blech.
I've seen X201 tablets at my workplace and I can confirm that the panels are quite obviously of the TN type. You get a colour inversion effect when the screen is tilted up and it's completely washed-out when you look at it from above. Aside from that, a Lenovo rep has contacted me directly on the official Thinkpad forums. He confirmed that Lenovo has been using only TN panels in all of their notebooks and consumer-grade LCD monitors for the past few years.
@SFseis Since the beginning of 2010, Lenovo has been sneakily replacing the IPS & PVA panels with cheaper TN panels. I know it because I've been buying them by the dozen for the company I work for. Lenovo's CS could not give me a clear answer. It's obvious that the panels are now of the TN type because of the colour shifting and poor viewing angles.
Argue with your experience, not by copying and pasting text from the Internet.
@evildwarf Okay, I just got my X201t with the 300nits multitouch display. And I must admit, that the viewing angles aren't good at all. Compared to my Dell 2209WA (IPS) they're really bad. So it really seems like Lenovo puts TN Panels in their tablet notebooks. What a pity...
@SFseis Told you man. My clients have been complaining about this problem as well. I'm gonna have to work something out with Lenovo and if all else fails, I'll get a refund and I'll choose Fujitsu as my supplier for tablets.
@SFseis Actually I need to correct myself once more. The X201t definately has an IPS Panel! However, due to the mutlitouch coating the viewing angels are week. So I would probably get the model w/o the multitouch option!
All: WideView (170° viewing), anti-refl ective and anti-glare protective coatings, write on screen with standard digitizer pen, pen holder in front base, rotatable dual swivel hinge for tablet mode (portrait or landscape) or picture frame mode (keyboard faces away from user), buttons on display
@MobileTechReview Lisa, one thing I've always been wondering about when it comes to those lenovo tablets: This extending battery, that adds extra size to the size, do you find it useful like when you hold you can grab the tablet from it, or do you think that it just makes holding it unconfortable and just adds bulk?
@malehousecat I wanna know how it works with any Linux distribution (preferably Ubuntu), like does linux has drivers for the touch screen? otherwise awesome review! :)
@malehousecat .......and i have. Thank you for your review, you helped me in my decision to purchase this x201 tablet. This is my third thinkpad, and i wont switch (a22m, r61im and now this). I was a bit skeptical about the lenovo takeover but so far, the machine is top class. To be able to touch is awesome! I can draw directly on my screen in autocad (priceless) and oh, the battery life? Well, with wireless off, and low screen, im getting close to 7hrs and im ok with that.
Stylus responsiveness looks surprisingly slow given this is an i7...
Screen looks amazing outdoors. I have an X41T from years 5 years ago and it's still going strong. Anyway, I was a little underwhelmed with this new model, given the price. 2010 will be the year of tablets, so I'll wait to see what other ones come out before I upgrade.
I suspect the modem is there for faxing. Business tablets are used by sales folks in the field and I'm told they capture a digital signature for a sales agreement-- big use for that EMR pen. Then they can fax the signed agreement back to the office.
Can you motivate that? If I'm not severely mistaken, those are made in plastic and use TN panels while the X201 tablet use IPS or PVA panels and is made by magnesium alloy.
sorry to spam...but do you know why they dont offer the XGA+ screen anymore?? i havnt been in the market for a computer in a while and i really love the large screen real estate of my computer
my major gripe is that i need to get a new ultra base....i like having my dual screen plugged in with all of my other perifs on the ultra base so i can just plug in and go after a long day

@thejaguar9 Here are a few models:
- Lenovo Thinkpad X201
- HP TC4400 (the one i have, fits all factors from my previous post), or TC4200
- HP Elitebook 2730p (newer/faster than the TC4400)
- Toshiba Portege M200/M400 (M400 is newer, M200 has a hi-res screen, but not AFFS)
- HP Touchsmart TM2 (excellent and light, but not enough buttons)
- Fujitsu T4010/T4020D (great but kinda old)
- Motion Computing LS800 (almost all TPC's of this brand are awesome, but expensive)
- IBM X41 (also kinda old)

It looks like theres a huge delay on drawing lines, why is that? The PC seems more then powerful enough for that to not happen?

This has nearly everything I want except for 2 things: HDMI output and IEEE 1394 port. Seems like all laptops/tablets now should come with an HDMI port but it's not that big of a deal to me since I can get a VGA-to-HDMI cable. But the lack of IEEE 1394 is the only thing that's preventing me on going out and getting this since I have video and audio hardware that use 1394. I hope future models include this.
UTbone04 1 year ago
@UTbone04 u can use express card to add 1394 firewire connection.
yochayrofe 1 year ago

Format, leave off all of the junk and install the latest drivers.
excalibur1814 1 year ago
@excalibur1814
are you sure that's the problem?
just interested
avinotion 1 year ago
@avinotion I won't own a laptop without one now. The Latitude XT suffered due to its crippled 1.8" HD which improved when I exchanged for an SSD. I also own an ARchos 9 which was awful until changing to SSD. The Lenovo probably also has a lot or rubbish installed along with a billion startup services. Usual oem stuff.
excalibur1814 1 year ago
@avinotion If the machine is doing a lot of HD thrashing, certain functions of the machine will slow down but I see what you mean with regards to the delay. Updated drivers perhaps? I used to own a Tosh M750 which was near perfect for Stylus use.

Are you actually telling me that Lenovo are using TN-panels even though they say they use IPS/PVA panels?
minux82 1 year ago
I know the Core i7 makes it "much faster" but the specs on the site say it's .2 LBS heavier than the X200t's starting weight. . .
Since you have more than specs to look at, why do you say it's "much lighter" ?

Hi, when will the full written review of the laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad X201t) be posted?
Thanks, and wonderful video!

Nice vid indeed....good quality and you give a very nice impression of the tablet.
I'd only like to see a comparison between the outdoor display and the regular (multitouch) tablet display...
SFseis 1 year ago
Your reviews are great esecially the emphasis on drawing.
Multi touch is secondary .

No displayport??? Scandalous! How to you connect to the projector???
mnnh1 1 year ago
it does have VGA. I assume they have VGA on the machine itself since it is more widely used than DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI. Probably for the same reason they still include modems in many of their ThinkPads.
minux82 1 year ago
might as well just buy a macbook.
PlatoTheForms 1 year ago
I'm sure that this tablet is really well-built, knowing Lenovo's reputation for solid notebooks.
But why oh why did they have to use a TN panel for the screen? Back when Compaq made decent tablets (circa 2005) they used IPS screens which are still unrivalled to this very day. Those screens had excellent colour accuracy and virtually no contrast shift. They were absolutely perfect for the artist on the go.
It seems that every manufacturer these days uses crappy TN panels to cut costs. Blech.
evildwarf 2 years ago
X201 Tablet panels are IPS or PVA, according to tabook.
minux82 1 year ago 2
I've seen X201 tablets at my workplace and I can confirm that the panels are quite obviously of the TN type. You get a colour inversion effect when the screen is tilted up and it's completely washed-out when you look at it from above. Aside from that, a Lenovo rep has contacted me directly on the official Thinkpad forums. He confirmed that Lenovo has been using only TN panels in all of their notebooks and consumer-grade LCD monitors for the past few years.

@evildwarf
you're definitely wrong about that. All Lenovo Tablets use IPS/PVA panels. Have a look at tabook:
Entry: 12.1" WXGA (1280x800) TFT color, anti-glare, LED backlight 200 nits, 16:10 aspect ratio, 500:1 contrast ratio, IPS, frameless screen
MultiTouch: 12.1" WXGA TFT color, anti-glare, LED backlight, 270 nits, 16:10 aspect ratio, 500:1 contrast ratio, IPS, MultiView , enhanced MultiTouch (touchscreen support pen & two-finger touch)
SFseis 1 year ago
@SFseis Since the beginning of 2010, Lenovo has been sneakily replacing the IPS & PVA panels with cheaper TN panels. I know it because I've been buying them by the dozen for the company I work for. Lenovo's CS could not give me a clear answer. It's obvious that the panels are now of the TN type because of the colour shifting and poor viewing angles.
Argue with your experience, not by copying and pasting text from the Internet.
evildwarf 1 year ago
@evildwarf
it's not just copy & paste. tabook is a very reliable source for thinkpad specs. It comes right from Lenovo.
Well, I get mine in a week or so. We'll see if it has IPS or not.
SFseis 1 year ago
@evildwarf Okay, I just got my X201t with the 300nits multitouch display. And I must admit, that the viewing angles aren't good at all. Compared to my Dell 2209WA (IPS) they're really bad. So it really seems like Lenovo puts TN Panels in their tablet notebooks. What a pity...
SFseis 1 year ago
@SFseis Told you man. My clients have been complaining about this problem as well. I'm gonna have to work something out with Lenovo and if all else fails, I'll get a refund and I'll choose Fujitsu as my supplier for tablets.
evildwarf 1 year ago
@SFseis Actually I need to correct myself once more. The X201t definately has an IPS Panel! However, due to the mutlitouch coating the viewing angels are week. So I would probably get the model w/o the multitouch option!
SFseis 1 year ago
@evildwarf
SFseis 1 year ago
@minux82 Well yea that's what I thought... but since I'm holding one in my hand comparing it to my Dell 2209WA it really doesn't compare...

VideoDocR 1 year ago

Why is there a modem?!? what are we in 1999?
Stylus responsiveness looks surprisingly slow given this is an i7...
Screen looks amazing outdoors. I have an X41T from years 5 years ago and it's still going strong. Anyway, I was a little underwhelmed with this new model, given the price. 2010 will be the year of tablets, so I'll wait to see what other ones come out before I upgrade.
Thank again for the review!
scd6969 2 years ago
I suspect the modem is there for faxing. Business tablets are used by sales folks in the field and I'm told they capture a digital signature for a sales agreement-- big use for that EMR pen. Then they can fax the signed agreement back to the office.

Good review. Getting back to a former comment (by scd6969)- any thoughts on why the stylus resopnse is slow? Especially with that i7.
Thanks in advance.

Hp touchsmart tm2 or touch smart tx2 is 100 times better than this ugly touchscreen laptop.

Can you motivate that? If I'm not severely mistaken, those are made in plastic and use TN panels while the X201 tablet use IPS or PVA panels and is made by magnesium alloy.
