Now, If I am giving you my money that I slaved over and was given begrudgingly by my employer, I am not just paying for goods! I am paying for you to be nice to me. If I cant get that regard from you, I respectfully will not be back.

  • @peaco777777 im in portugal and im so excited to go there. do you recommend?

  • I hate big sandwiches. I'd have to take half the meat off to enjoy it. That's why America is so fat. They have to have big portions.

  • Passed by it a bunch of times, but never got a chance to go in. I'm not making that same mistake.

  • Make sure you tip your slicer before you place your order.

  • Thanks for the warning!

  • i would like to travel to new york, usa only to eat pastrami sandwitch. i hope it taste as good as it looks.

  • and to eat our lovely smoked meat log.

  • First of all Pastrami is not made of Pork. Besides being open on Saturday,I don't think the meats are kosher.Meaning they haven't been slaughtered ritually. That is an entire procedure involving a special humane technique and removal of all of the blood.

Many muslims consider kosher meat halal (permissible) others considerit haram (forbidden)as the animal is slaughtered by a Jew,which for centuries,Muslims have been unable to tolerate. While no pork is served, the beef at Katz's is not kosher.

  • "special humane technique"?

Don't you mean 'special INhumane technique'?

Aren't they bled to death? Or am I confusing Halal with Kosher.

  • Animals slaughtered for use as kosher meat are not bled to death. Their throats are cut in one swift movement with a very sharp knife. The knife is examined between each slaughter so as to insure there are no nicks in the knife. A nick could cause the animal to suffer.

Once dead all blood is removed. Kosher meat cannot have any blood however, an animal that is bled to death would not be kosher.

  • Ah.. Well I believe that with Halal then the blood is removed by cutting the artery and letting the heart pump the blood out. Bleeding to death then. So maybe I confused that with Kosher. I'm off to New York in a week can't wait to try a Pastrami!

  • Actually it's in the Quran that the food of those given the book is lawful for us, so that slaughtered by jews is halal. There is no room for controversy since the text is clear.

  • Not closed at all. Bring $2 to tip the counterman and the pastrami sandwich (inarguably the best in the world) is thicker. But NOT really kosher by strict rules because it is open on Saturday.

  • isnt pastarami....pork

  • lol, just googled it it is kosher.

  • Its not kosher in the true definition. Katz's is what is called Kosher style. That means the meat may not have been slaughtered in the ritually pure style using a Shochet (slaughterer) nor is it processed using a salt bath to remove all of the blood. In addition, the store itself may sell pork products e.g. balonga or dairy products. All of this precludes that from being considered Kosher. Whether also violates Halal, I don't know.

  • thanks

  • katz's smoked meat is good enough to bring peace o the middle east!

    salam/shalom

  • thanks

  • You're really appreciative lol

  • yeah it does violate halaal

  • im hungry, is it kosher?

  • That place looks great. Never been to a deli in NY but my favorite in Chicago is Manny's. I'm hungry now.

  • isn't it closed?
