I was sitting there in the room for this one (for WWL-TV). I loved it. Jim was a great guy. I enjoyed covering him and his team during my 4 seasons around the Saints. This was before the PC police and the internet and ESPN took over everything. Now the NFL is so corporate and apologetic. borrrrrrring.
He just had to say it. There is some truth to it though, because winning against a bad team playing badly is different from winning against a team that's highly talented and executing perfectly.
I really felt like Jim Mora's mental stability started to decompose near the end of his coaching career. Oh well. It made for some pretty funny coaching rants!
@johnnyenc He was always stable. He just got fed up. You have to consider the fact that players really started turning into prima donnas right around the time Mora's sun was setting. You also have to consider the fact that free agency changed the players' approach. They knew they didn't have to perform well all the time. If you were a coach, that'd piss you off. I think it was the lawsuit against the restrictions of Plan B in '92 that tore the lid off salary limits and agent/team negotiations.
Mora was never let go. He quit both times. If it's ok for Dungy to improve every year, then it should be for Mora. Mora took a team whose fans were wearing paper bags over their heads and made them winners even though they had to contend with the 49ers. The Colts weren't much better when he took over either. He did it all with players who nobody this day and age can name (before Manning and James anyway), and never got any draft pics because he always mustered a 10-6 effor with those teams.
@TheEsquire212 Bill Polian drafted Manning and James. He joined the Colts in 1998 and every single player drafted since, starting in that year has been him making the final call. One of the all time great football talent evaluators.
@curlyeye And yet Polian has not figured out why his teams do poorly in the playoffs - because he won't build real teams - he builds speed teams that can't hit or take hits and he drafts quarterbacks who lack the toughness to handle playoff football.
@dhwrd3X you are wrong, period. Peyton Manning has been doing the second biggest carry job in all of sports behind Michael Jordan. He may have carried them as far as possible though. Theyare 2-2 and headed to 10 - 6. If not for their cakewalk schedule, 6 - 10 wouldn't be out of the question.
He is so right!!!! If you have never coached you really don't know!! I've heard people say great play when an athlete makes something happen and everybody blew their assignments!!
Guy doesn't get the respect he deserves. Tony Dungy has his lone ring because of Peyton Manning. This guy would have had 3 or 4 if he were still the Colts coach. Also Dungy got more chances without being fired.
@60BloodyChamp60 How do you figure? They coached the same amount of time in the NFL. Dungy was let go in Tampa for not getting it done after 7 years. Mora had 10 1/2 in NO and 4 in Indy. They went BACKWARD in his 4th year. Tampa was always progressing under Dungy, they just never fully got over the hump.
Outstanding! Those was some great years for us coach, and I hope that you share in our success this year, because you are a huge part of our history. As far as this rant, I wish this could be posted on all of the sites (particularly "Inside the NFL") where the puffed up "experts" talk authoritatively about the weaknesses of our team. They really don't know. They all think they do, but they REALLY don't know, AND THEY NEVER WILL. We'll always love you in NO coach.

This was great. It was after a preseason game they lost to the Colts 35-7. The reporter asked him about the bad performance and this was the answer.

Jim Mora was fired by the Indianapolis Colts after a 6-10 season in 2001, he walked away from the New Orleans Saints after a 2-6 start in 1996.

But your point is otherwise well-taken.
