Elmo has the Violin on the wrong shoulder.....is Elmo a Leftie? Perhaps this is a FUTURISTIC LEFTIE VIOLIN. YES.....of course!!!!...Sesame St. was WAY ahead of it's time!!! Great performance by YoYo and to Parents of young children learning the violin, this is why you buy a silencer Mute and have a soundproof room for their practice, during the "scratchy beginner period". :)
Its because the puppeteer was right handed so their right arm is controlling Elmo's head and their left arm is controlling the bow. If you didn't notice whenever any Muppet plays a string instrument, they play it left handed. Look at Electric Mayhem, Floyd and Janice play left handed.
Do you know if there is a youtube copy of the time that Isaac Stern was playing on Sesame Street? He played Happy Birthday. I was in the kitchen, the kids were watching Sesame St., and just melted when I heard it. I would so love to find it. I saw one promising link, but then it said it had been removed due to terms of use violation.
The Sesame Street puppeteer works Elmo's mouth with his right hand. So, the puppet's right hand was fixed to the neck of the violin so the left hand could perform the motion. All Sesame Street and Muppet guitarists played left handed.
Either he is left handed or what so ever. Saying that it is cuter doesn't even make sense. When you play violin you are supposed to rest your chin more tightly on the chinrest.
flipped fiddle? weird!

Was a little too old to watch this bit when it was first aired... How is it, then, that I laugh at it now, genuinely, at age 33? Classic stuff.

HARSH.

His voice is HARSH here? Elmo sounds gentle and kind here compared to his current, high-pitched, grating voice.

Elmo's voice sounds different a little. Was Christopher Cash doing it in this video?

No, it's definitely Kevin Clash. His voice hasn't totally been perfected yet.

I wonder how many kids got inspired to take up the 'cello (or even the violin) because of Yo-Yo's and Elmo's skit! :)
rakkav 4 years ago 3
In Elmo's early days, it seems to me that his voice was just a bit tinier and raspier than it is today. I know this is Kevin Clash performing him.
That aside, this is a great skit! Elmo is one of my favorite characters, even if others find him annoying nowadays.
auburn4wins 4 years ago
Elmo's MY favorite character too. He's a great kid, you know? I'm glad I got to see him in his early years.
I don't see why people say Elmo's annoying. Some say he's a sellout, but I don't think that's either true or necessary to make that statement.

Watch Yo-Yo's mouth..It's amusing. I read elsewhere the this was from 1987..

i still can't see where anything with Elmo in it can be construed as "classic" since he hasn't been around that long. But, a cute skit nonetheless.
gooup 5 years ago
Well, he's been around for more than 20 years now. More than half the show's entire run.
Marbles471 5 years ago
20 years? Really? Well, i stand corrected! :o)
