Ya gotta love Bobby Hackett! Instead of getting a new bucket mute, he salvages his old one with what looks like a coffee-can lid and electrician's tape.
@TanglangSlayer that feel is the great american swing. "fusion" grabs the eight note line and tries to pull it into a straight thing. That's why it's funk, not jazz. It's intelligent, but intelligence doesn't make jazz. Intelligent swing makes jazz. This music feels right.
Do you by chance have a recording of Hackett playing "Our Love is Here To Stay." I may be wrong but I think he was then with the Jackie Gleason Band--probably ghost directing it.
Well said!!! I wish more people knew about him though. I do what I can to educate everyone I meet about jazz in general. Thank you for the comparison!!!
I once heard it said that Tommy Dorsey told Louis Bellson, "There's a new trombone player on the scene gonna' be the best ever." He was referring to Urbie Green. I love Dorsey and Teagarden and Morrow and Zentner and Covington and Havens and Fontana but I think Urbie was the world's best. He just can do it ALL, so well!

This kind of Jazz is brilliant, because of the soulful /blues feeling, but I cannot stand fusion jazz... why ruin such a wonderful feeling.... ah....

I always said Bobby played the sweetest cornet ever. His jazz was great, but the sentimental numbers were played by him to perfection!

The most elegant trumpet of Bobby Hackett. The Shakespeare of the cornet.
