You're completely right that it's simple and repetitive. Boring to play, sure. What makes this bass line so good is exactly that simplicity. Flea could have written it more complex, yet he disciplines himself and settles on the simple. The minimalism of it supports the song extremely well. That's why it works, and why I like it.
