Used to be in the SCA (called 'Guido of the Speedy Retreat cos martial arts and fencing gave me good footwork)

We used ratan weapons and home-made armour/shields/helm.

Open melees were a hoot. So was archers v charge of footsoldiers. I was an archer in those tourneys.

Well here the budget for the French youth make them use their worn out Hockey sticks wrapped in a thin foam coating, personally I prefer about 5 feet of 3/8 inch threaded rod coated in thin 1/4 inch foam and coated with duck tape , it gets your attention when you get whacked over the head with it LOL ; - )
