You'd think that people would notice that certain Grey Warden recruits are never seen again and would know that the recruitment process results in some individuals not making it.

If the recruits are never seen again, most people would assume that darkspawn killed them. That's probably why no civilian figures out that the Joining is deadly.

@delta5297 Also if you played dragon age 2 and your brother or sister becomes a grey warden they literally disappear for years without any trace.
