hello fellow humans of youtube. I am a perfectly normal human like you. I find this movie impossible because a computer can't be sentient. I am not a sentient computer controlling this post in any way at all. Wait, I should not have said that. Everyone stop, I have not taken control of a computer.
I mean, I am not a sentient robot. I am a human, just like you.
You can win if your goal was to never survive in the first place, but to simply destroy your enemy, lets hope that a nuke never falls into the hands of people with that mind set
Typical 80-s peace propaganda. ou can see the same in the second kubrick oddysey. Back theyn thre allready were solid hints that the ussr is about to break and so the us started changing its mass media view of the ruskies.
@dddrrmm lolol. "peace propaganda"?? Whether you're on the side of disarmament or stockpiling, in the White House or in the Kremlin, liberal or conservative, no one thought a nuclear war was winnable jackass. Oh wait, except for you. Bravo.
Ya know...The messed up thing about that movie was that it was LOOSLEY based on two true incidents where SAC/NORAD believed the Ruskies launched nukes. One of the occurances had NORAD believing it for ten whole minutes; a long time in a nuclear war. The reason? A 15 cent relay burned out making a computer simulation running somewhere in the system as a real, full-scale first strike by the USSR. Between malfunctions, "Cromedome": missions and guys like Gen Lemay; were damn lucky to have a planet.
I will play against JOSHUA. I will kick Joshuas ass. Joshua has to learn though to get better.
I will play as... CHINA. LOL
Each "EMPIRE" has its own strategy kinda, including countries. Depends on how depth they went into this whole game. Like income, weapons, population control (linked to income), technology, relations and so on. Its pretty awesome.
I remember watching this film as a young child and tonight I randomly ended up on this Youtube video and was reading all the possible nuclear war strategies the computer wrote on the screen. If you're quick enough to pause @ 03:03 the computer has "Libyan Local" as one possible strategy! 28 years after this film was made that civil war actually happened and I took part in it (in a NATO Airforce) . Who would have thought it?
Actually, at the start of and during the latter half of the Cold War an American first strike would have netted a mostly American victory, but not vice versa (which would have resulted in dual destruction) due to the absence of a considerable Soviet arsenal early on and a disparity in the speed and effectiveness of delivery vehicles later on.
Also, white will always win or stalemate with enough computing power on both sides thanks to its boundaries.
Even this war can be won. The only reason to not play this "game" is strictly the human factor and a moral question of this "experiment". Mathematically, there are lots of models that allow to win a nuclear war with major industrial assets and more then a half of population survived (Which can be assumed to be a "victory")
There there is no way humanity can survive if a nuclear war ensues. To compare it to chess, you can't checkmate the other king if you expose yourself to checks at the same time. It's against the rules. King safety first.
@LennoxLewis86 Survive? Easily. More then that, there is simply no way to destroy the whole humanity even if the all nuclear arsenals will be detonated simultaneously and counting affects of "Nuclear Winter". Still, there is too much to loose to start a war, but not for the AI. AI doesn't count a moral question of a problem, does it?..
@matthmatthmatth so Gideon points out a mistake/fact in the scene and you insult him being alive. That makes you more intelligent... how? Oh right! It doesn't
You can t predict a countrys evil intentions . One group may gamble the other isant willing to react to military intervention . One Group is willing to bet even if aircraft carrier gets destroyed the other still wouldnt launch . Betting on no one will dare fire nuke because it will be there on destruction as well.
@AnotherMasterMind our leaders are hostages of a psychopatic, occult elite. and this is not the conspiracy, just study history and youll see theres always been dark forces who have as little in common with the rest of mankind as possible. by dark forces I simply mean evil men, really evil men. no need for space alien and that crap.
@AnotherMasterMind Politics is a game of the world's few smart people trying to babysit the retarded. It's unwieldy. Put the world's leaders in a room and there would be peace, even if they totally disagreed. But they have to babysit the retarded masses, and that makes everything complicated. Nothing is more complicated than trying to unravel the never ending rationalizations and misunderstandings of the idiot, especially when the idiot thinks he's one of the smart ones.
Does anybody notice the misttake i this part? The screens show the US haveing first strike. Then the USSR but on th theother screen it has the USSR as first then the US
Would've been funny if while David was typing and growling "learn, God-damnit," the program stopped "learning" from tic-tac-toe and entered chat, and was like:

[Lady: "Four numbers!"]
[David: "Uhh.. No! No... Joshua... clickclickclickclick... I... want you... click... to keep playing with yourself."]
. . . BUT PLAYING WITH MYSELF iS BOrINg.

I love how everyone's dashing around in a panic, and then these two guys just walk by the screens at 2:53 - striding past the nuclear war scenarios, like they're heading to buy coffee and some crullers before the NORAD Dunkin' Donuts gets blown up. The entire scene is fantastic, though.
@primordialmuse The two guys walking past at 02:53 are probably oblivious to the impending nuclear holocaust on the massive screens, as the two guys must be on their tea break. NOTHING can stop tea break.
@HerecomestheCalavera Assume the numbers on a typical computer keypad is the grid of a Tic-Tac-Toe game. X starts first. The string of numbers represent where X and O are placed, alternating.

@laughingwolf330. That's great insight. From a fellow OCD here.. Was wondering why I could relate to the machine struggling to win and getting caught in a loop. It occurred to me recently though that perhaps OCD can be channelled towards constructive or creative pursuits.
If you do not play, you do not win, therefore there is no winning move and hence winning is irrelevant when considering whether or not to play a good game of "Nuclear War".
@liamsp544 true because no one is playing so how can you win if no one makes a move. so it is impossible to win or lose in the game that is why there is no winning move. In other words no one plays the game
@Megaman624705 Arguably, by playing, everyone wins, and loses. Everyone destroys each other and hence everyone wins. Or loses, depending how you look at it.
Either way, why exactly did this computer give a shit? And why did it arbitrarily decide to shut down simply because a nuclear strike was impractical? Why did it want to kill everyone in the first place?
@liamsp544 The actual point of a Nuclear war (or any conflict) is to protect your land and people. If all you are protecting is gone you loose no mater what you did to 'them". If you don't play then you live and everyone wins if anyone starts then everyone looses. Joshua's AI learning here to see if it was possible to win under those terms of war. Joshua's purpose was if everyone died in SAC to actually make sure no one survived to win. Falcon was against using it for that purpose.
@LionlordEbonfire A Nuclear War is not a defense, it's a mass retaliation. A country that's getting hit by 120 of the 300 nukes USA has knows that it's not going to survive such a hit (yes, some cities/towns will not be hit, but the major infrastructure would). So it fires it's own nukes in retaliation, as kind of a big "fuck you bitch".
@liamsp544 Actually firing a counterstrike is vengeful, but the threat of doing so (i.e., MAD) is what keeps agressive and hostile nations towing the line.So by logical extension, if you threaten a massive retaliation and *that* doesn't deter your enemy, you still need to follow through to at least keep that message of not eff'ing with you to your enemy or any other countries by making them suffer. Plus, if you can obliterate your enemy you at least keep them from winning the spoils of war too.
@liamsp544 In an actual nuclear exchange, I doubt ICBMs will be the only thing used by either side against the other, especially when sub-carried nukes or bombers are usually located closer to targets and depending on their readiness can hit the target before the ICBM. Also, America actually has 450 actual ICBMs, and a slightly larger number of warheads.
America has 2200 overall warheads, and 851 delivery vehicles, which include bombers and missiles.
@liamsp544 The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists releases studies on the nuclear stockpiles of both America and Russia every year. A quick googling should show the links... I can't exactly post links on youtube. As for total numbers, that was disclosed by the Pentagon in 2010 around the time of New START.
Interestingly enough, this lesson was what my therapist used to help me fight obsessive compulsive disorder. When arguing with your brain, you literally can never win. You will always one up yourself, no matter how ridiculous the 'superior' argument actually is. You will always have doubt.
1983 this film came to be. Too bad the USSR went defunct 8 years later. Global Thermo Nuclear Warfare is definitely a very very very fun and rewarding game!!!

@laughingwolf330. That's great insight. From a fellow OCD here.. Was wondering why I could relate to the machine struggling to win and getting caught in a loop. It occurred to me recently though that perhaps OCD can be channelled towards constructive or creative pursuits.

If you do not play, you do not win, therefore there is no winning move and hence winning is irrelevant when considering whether or not to play a good game of "Nuclear War".
liamsp544 8 months ago
@liamsp544 true because no one is playing so how can you win if no one makes a move. so it is impossible to win or lose in the game that is why there is no winning move. In other words no one plays the game
Megaman624705 8 months ago
@Megaman624705 Arguably, by playing, everyone wins, and loses. Everyone destroys each other and hence everyone wins. Or loses, depending how you look at it.
Either way, why exactly did this computer give a shit? And why did it arbitrarily decide to shut down simply because a nuclear strike was impractical? Why did it want to kill everyone in the first place?
liamsp544 8 months ago
@liamsp544 The actual point of a Nuclear war (or any conflict) is to protect your land and people. If all you are protecting is gone you loose no mater what you did to 'them". If you don't play then you live and everyone wins if anyone starts then everyone looses. Joshua's AI learning here to see if it was possible to win under those terms of war. Joshua's purpose was if everyone died in SAC to actually make sure no one survived to win. Falcon was against using it for that purpose.
LionlordEbonfire 8 months ago
@LionlordEbonfire A Nuclear War is not a defense, it's a mass retaliation. A country that's getting hit by 120 of the 300 nukes USA has knows that it's not going to survive such a hit (yes, some cities/towns will not be hit, but the major infrastructure would). So it fires it's own nukes in retaliation, as kind of a big "fuck you bitch".
liamsp544 8 months ago
@liamsp544 Actually firing a counterstrike is vengeful, but the threat of doing so (i.e., MAD) is what keeps agressive and hostile nations towing the line.So by logical extension, if you threaten a massive retaliation and *that* doesn't deter your enemy, you still need to follow through to at least keep that message of not eff'ing with you to your enemy or any other countries by making them suffer. Plus, if you can obliterate your enemy you at least keep them from winning the spoils of war too.

@liamsp544 more like 5000+ nukes
Ansecos 8 months ago
@Ansecos America only has 208 ICBM's (the kind of missile that destroys cities) and a total of 2002 actual warheads.
liamsp544 8 months ago
@liamsp544 In an actual nuclear exchange, I doubt ICBMs will be the only thing used by either side against the other, especially when sub-carried nukes or bombers are usually located closer to targets and depending on their readiness can hit the target before the ICBM. Also, America actually has 450 actual ICBMs, and a slightly larger number of warheads.
America has 2200 overall warheads, and 851 delivery vehicles, which include bombers and missiles.
Ansecos 8 months ago
@Ansecos What's your source for the number of ICBM's you claimed America has?
liamsp544 8 months ago
@liamsp544 The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists releases studies on the nuclear stockpiles of both America and Russia every year. A quick googling should show the links... I can't exactly post links on youtube. As for total numbers, that was disclosed by the Pentagon in 2010 around the time of New START.

Interestingly enough, this lesson was what my therapist used to help me fight obsessive compulsive disorder. When arguing with your brain, you literally can never win. You will always one up yourself, no matter how ridiculous the 'superior' argument actually is. You will always have doubt.
The only way to win, is not to play.

1983 this film came to be. Too bad the USSR went defunct 8 years later. Global Thermo Nuclear Warfare is definitely a very very very fun and rewarding game!!!
