  • @bagger101

lol I take it that you're one of the 99% too, aren't you? I'm glad to see that you are trying to solve the world's problems through the use of your superb usage of the English language....

  • If you want to expressing devotion to Canada or any other country be my guest. You seem to want to pigeon hole me into something... you go right ahead and do it. I sleep just fine at night. The basic function of nationalism is the same function of religion. To get you angry, annoyed with anyone who opposes "your nation" and to prepare you to accept death in the name of your country. If you want that. Then you can have it. I don't agree. Live with it... oh and one last thing... umadbro?

  • As an aside... Nationalism is the sum of mythologies developed so that, if or when religion fails the oligarchs have another tool to justify exploitation and theft. Love your country is like loving Zeus... sure... it SOUNDS good but really? It's pure fiction. If humanity were more concern about erasing borders and helping OTHER human beings instead of preserving the mythologies we would all be better for it.... But hey.. everyone loves a good fiction right?

  • @ShinEmperor Someone from Montreal who hates Canada, that's not a cliche. If you don't like it, you can get out.

  • @Southparker100000000 Ha! I don't hate Canada, way to completely misinterpret what I said. My criticism was about Nationalism. ALL nationalism... Canadian, Quebecois... you name it.. but hey.. again.. not surprised... it must make for a nice fiction for you to think I would have anything as silly as nationalism...

  • @ShinEmperor Canada is a physical space you retard, how could it be fictional?

  • @Southparker100000000 Uh, if you think Canada is a physical space then you are the one who doesn't completely understand. It's obvious to me, you're troll, and a bad one at that. But hey, keep on trolling. As for Canada, it, like all nations, is a political body that governs people... also you need to do some reading, as you do NO IDEA what nationalism is, considering somehow you think Nationalism = Canadian land... If I'm retarded.. then I have NO IDEA what you are... or what bus your on.

  • @ShinEmperor Why are you even here. I mean, wtf. Who are you, who cares what you have to say on rmr, were here to watch rmr, why the hell are you here.

  • @ShinEmperor

    na·tion·al·ism

Noun: Patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts.

    pa·tri·ot·ic

Adjective: Having or expressing devotion to and vigorous support for one's country.

LOL you don't even understand the basic definition of nationalism and here you are talking about it, that is sad, why are you so stupid? Also why do you hate freedom so much? Just wondering. A country is a physical thing, ergo expressing support for it is not akin to supporting a myth retard. LOL

  • @Southparker100000000 You probably need to read "Imagined Communities" by Benedict Anderson. Even the first chapter of it would suffice.

  • @HatakeMegumi You've probably never read "A Physical Analysis of Countries: a Look at Legitimate Reasons for Nationalist Pride". Even the first chapter of it would suffice.

  • @Southparker100000000 Searching for it on amazon, and the online catalogues for the top university in Canada and the U.S. No results found. Although judging from the title the "physical analysis" of a country would do nothing but support the fiction of the nation state.

  • @Southparker100000000 If you need proof of a nation's fictionality, just think of Taiwan. It is politically and economically autonomous with its own set of laws and functions like a nation - the only reason it's not? Most countries will not recognize it as thus.

As for nationalism? Be prepared to kill and/or die for land that's not yours under the laws of private property (though we're lead to believe its ours) and people like me, who you clearly dislike.

  • Gotta love youtube debates.. everyone still thinks it matters what party is in power, or what religion matters... relics.. Everything comes down to those who have, and those who don't. Simple. All other arguments are just futile and useless... There is only one consistency in "democracy".. the rich get richer. ALWAYS. Left or Right, the crooks at the top continue to steal and exploit and the folks at the bottom squabble over the scraps and their "freedoms"...

  • Oh Rick Mercer, somehow you inspire debates over philosophy, politics and religion by just being funny. Keep up the good work!

  • 3:20 joker from Full Metal Jacket

  • ice cream!

  • Stephen Harper is an Idiot and he should be thrown in Jail for life. While he is in Jail he can Pray to his God for Salvation.

  • @TheSilverWatch What's with your unwarranted hate of Stephen Harper? Has he done something horrible to you personally or do you just disagree with his politics? I've disagreed with Jack Layton's politics or in fact all libs who no respect for the military, christianity and the monarchy, yet I didn't hate Jack or wish him any harm. Also Christians make up the majority of Canada so have some respect, not everyone is an atheist like you.

  • @TheSilverWatch Wow so because I don't agree with you I'm a government shill? If you hate this government and christianity so much, feel free to move to communist China or north Korea. Not many christians there I hear. You NDP commies disgust me.

  • I wonder if Mercer asked these guys in private, how they feel about Harper claiming to worship the military and yet abandoning the vets (especially when they come home wounded)?

  • Oh come on Rick you were dangling off a sky scraper last week and this little, bitty wall freaked you out. LOL

  • @RoseofSharon321

This was filmed more than six years ago.

  • @celticphrog Oh my bad, I thought they were more they had added.

  • Really, people still pledge to the queen...

    Fucking disgrace.

  • @arsenelupin123 What do think is wrong with that?

  • @Dare2BStoopid

I don't like monarchy. I don't know how it makes sense to pledge allegiance to a foreign, unelected leader. And yes I am Canadian.

  • @arsenelupin123 You don't understand how the Canadian system works, obviously.

  • @TheAmbiguousTree

Yes I do, I am Canadian. That doesn't mean I like it, and I think the monarchy is a joke.

  • @arsenelupin123 I hate the Monarchy. It's a disgrace to our country, it makes us seem like we aren't really an independent nation, when we have the means to be... just cut us loose!

  • @14Schofield

Yeah. That's why I am a bit concerned when the Tories force all embassies to have photos of the royal family, and reinstitute royal symbols. I don't really care that we have remnants of the monarchy in our culture, but advocating for it is too much for me.

  • @arsenelupin123 Uhh, it's a bit too much for you huh?, man that must really hurt then. That doesn't make the least sense, I mean what harm is this doing to you, does putting photos up, create some sort of beam that hits you, Every country has a picture of their head of state in their embassies. Get some education.

  • @Rayden150

Australia and New Zealand, which are Commonwealth countries, don't have such a policy. So get your facts straight become to tell me to get an education.

I happen to believe that monarchy is a useless remnant of history and that Canada should be a fully independent state, governed by its people, not a monarch. We call this a political belief. I have no problems in letting those symbols slowly vanish for diplomatic reasons. But I don't believe restoring them is the way to go.

  • @arsenelupin123 I still think that you need some education, are you even Canadian?.. we are a fully independent state the thing you fail to see is that although the monarch is shared, the Canadian monarchy has nothing to do with the British, Australian, monarchies, its just the fact that monarch is one person.

The monarchy is one of the most effective ways of governing and if you don't like it just go to south of the border I'm sure you will love it, Ignorant people just like you.

  • @Rayden150

    I am Canadian.

I know we are independent. I just don't like the symbols. Now explain to me how monarchies with the same monarch are distinct. Are monarchies defined by something other than the monarch? I would love to be... educated.

Both monarchies and republics have had success in the past, so I don't know where you get this. But the fact it's more effective doesn't mean it's desirable. And last time I checked I had the right to express my politics without being forced to exile.

  • @arsenelupin123 calm down man, the queen has as much power over the country as the emperor of Japan has over the tides of the sea. the fact that we pledge allegiance to her is the same as saying "god keep our land" in the National anthem, only Really PC people get bent over stuff life that.

  • @treetheoak

I know she doesn't have power and if you knew me you'd see I'm not typically PC. It's sad but symbols matter in politics, and I don't like the idea to have a government promoting the symbols of a foreign institution that is the antithesis of our independence as a country. That's all.

And I probably look more angry than I actually am. I am just irritated. I couldn't possibly take that pledge honestly. Take it easy, I appreciate your civil tone.

  • @arsenelupin123 The monarchy isn't really doing anything in Canada but in Britain it's an excellent source of money. Lots of people say "Oh look that must be super expensive" but the profits coming in from tourism outweigh the expenses paid for the Monarchy.

  • @CanadianStereotype Not just tourism, each Monarch since George III has pledged to turn over the profits from the land they own to the British Government. It's hundreds of millions of pounds.

  • @arsenelupin123 The monarchy is a Canadian institution. She may live in the UK, but one of her titles is the Queen of Canada. She is our head of state, we are a fully independent nation.

@Rayden150 If you say that, then who are we? What is Canada? The nation of Canada is the sum of its history, the people who are living it, and the decisions we make for our future. If you completely disreguard our past, you also loose our accomplishments, and the one of the things which make us who we are

  • @Robert0288

I still don't know how this makes any sense. If one of Barack Obama's titles was prime minister of Canada, I don't see I we could be independent of the U.S. The only reason you can say that is because she has no power and is a pure symbol? Ok fine, then the only reason we didn't get rid of it is diplomatic. Anyway I agree that we should not discard our past, that not my intention, and Quebecers would be glad to hear you say that...

  • @treetheoak

You're right, I get carried away to much over this topic. I apologize.

    Cheers.

  • @arsenelupin123 eh. don't apologize, your freedom of speech is what makes this a great country. i just wanted to let you know that the queen doesn't have much power in any country that was part of the British empire, hell even the UK doesn't need the monarchy in any real advice. same with most countries that had monarchies it has lost everything in terms of power. imo i think of it as the monarchy helping Canada as an icebreaker and gives us a reminder of where we came from.
