When I start capturing packets with my IP address, its recording about 20,000 packets a minute when my browser isn't even open yet. Is this because another computer on my network is on the internet or what?

NKU spooky, I visited there back in 2004. Stayed for 2 weeks. Was big but according to friend it's one of the smaller American Uni's but by UK standards, it's big. But buildings didn't look that nice, just cement blocks.

Would not filtering "OUT" the protocol mean then seeing everything EXCEPT that specific protocol?

If there is such a term, which I admit I am unsure of, would not the action at 6:25 be called "filtering IN"?

@thatwierdkiduknow i dont understand why u're using piratebay for downloading wireshark. its opensource s/w & get it from official website. anti virus programs might prevent runinng applcations like this so try to add an exception in norton.

if u r using windows vista, then u wil hav to go to Control panel->Security->Security Center. In tht window, u hav to select Other Security Settings tab and then turn off the User Account Control. I think tht now u wil b able to get the available interface in the capture menu. hope it helped u.

I've just started to learn how computers communicate with each other, simply as a hobby, and it's a very steep learning curve!

Sadly there are an awful lot of knowledgeable people out there who don't want to help the fledgling student for whatever reason (dunno why, none of us were born experts!) so these tutorials are really useful, Mike. Nice and straightforward the information you need presented in a calm, concise manner. I'm learning a lot! More like this would be very welcome.

Umm. I press "capture" then "Interfaces" and I see my thing with an I.P Address. I click start but then the screen is blank, like it should, but then whenever I go to something, it stays blank. I don't get any packets or whatever. I am using a Linksys Wireless adapter (the internet) for my computer and i don't know why it wont work. I am also using version 1.0.3 Wireshark. I have not changed any settings because I just got it and I havent used it yet. What can I do?

Has nothing to do with the encryption. Just make sure you have the correct settings in the interface aswell as you are connected to the router.
