Hitler definitely did not deserve such splendid soldiers! To allow whole divisions or armies to be wasted. It makes one think deep about hid character when you realise that he had been an infantry soldier himself!

It's a lot easier to harshly judge people after the fact. Empathy requires one to realize that they might have done the same, or worse, than these accused. What if Nazi forces were fighting in St. Louis Missouri and heading for Chicago? As an American you may choose to fight in an atrocious manner. When it's in your own country it changes your psyche towards you enemy and life itself. War is hell and it changes people. Never judge individuals too harshly during wartime.
