I disagree with Michael. I like him but disagree with him on this issue. Any car will last if you keep the maintenance up on them. I've seen people dog the hell out of american cars like go over 60,000 miles since their last oil change so when that car died out on them they will go buy a foreign one but they will keep the maintenance up on them. I work for a company who, in recent years, has hired a new CEO who is "cutting spending". The company used to have the best workers in town, because it had the best perks & benefits. Now that they've lowered standards & benefits & started being "slave drivers" who don't appreciate their great workers, business is slipping & product isn't as good with the replacement workers who suck.

I'm sorry but most of the vehicles made today are worlds better than what was made in the 70's through 90's. The more complicated vehicles become, the greater the risk that something will go wrong. I don't have much sympathy for the workers either. Assembly line work is notoriously low paid, low skill jobs - to make over $15 or $20 an hour to put pieces together is a good living. I live in an area where assembly type work has been reduced to minimum wage.

Didn't American car companies have to build their cars out of cheaper materials as time progressed, in order to keep their business sustainable in the face of rising labor costs? Didn't the unions keep demanding more benefits and higher wages and pensions, even as their employers' competition (Japan, Germany) kept taking a huge chunk out of their profits? i laugh my ass off at 312000. and your taking weak ass kilometers, not miles. our 87 f.250 was used as a dumptruck. we hauled 7,000 pounds all the time in it. and at one time 9,000lbs. that truck was harsh abused, and it had 300,000 km when we sold it. and it was still running damn strong. all of our american cars have over 300,000km. so that lousy millage is not worth you mentioning. our taurus wagon has done more work than your 4 runner and would drag your piece of shit across north america.

GM and Chrysler and Ford made great cars until about 72 or 73. Thats when government forced emission standards came into play. I remember chrysler trying to make a lean burn 440 magnum. The government should have given the companies time to create new motors instead of trying to make existing motors pass emissions test. Anyone remember the oldsmobile diesel motor? So now this is the same government that owns the car companies and telling them what to build again. Good Luck!

Auto industry is tough business same as other factory/production businesses. The good old days consumed the future, which is today. We abandoned many domestic factories acrosss the board before. Either stand up to compete, or die.
Wanna support the US? Buy an old car or truck. Why? Because: You'll buy it from someone local. You'll take it to a local guy for service. A local guy for tires. A local parts store or junkyard for parts. An old car doesn't depreciate because it aint worth nothin to start with. I have a driveway full of them. If one breaks, I just drive another.
I have an old 96 Nissan Sentra w/ 221,000 miles on it. That car has been so reliable. It will make 250, 000 w/ no problem. My next one will be a Nissan Versa. I've seen people dog the hell out of american cars like go over 60,000 miles since their last oil change so when that car died out on them they will go buy a foreign one but they will keep the maintenance up on them. I'm sorry but most of the vehicles made today are worlds better than what was made in the 70's through 90's. The more complicated vehicles become, the greater the risk that something will go wrong. I don't have much sympathy for the workers either. Assembly line work is notoriously low paid, low skill jobs - to make over $15 or $20 an hour to put pieces together is a good living. I live in an area where assembly type work has been reduced to minimum wage.

i laugh my ass off at 312000. and your taking weak ass kilometers, not miles. our 87 f.250 was used as a dumptruck. we hauled 7,000 pounds all the time in it. and at one time 9,000lbs. that truck was harsh abused, and it had 300,000 km when we sold it. and it was still running damn strong. all of our american cars have over 300,000km. so that lousy millage is not worth you mentioning. our taurus wagon has done more work than your 4 runner and would drag your piece of shit across north america.

I have found out firsthand from my Honda and Toyota ownership that this is so stupid. I am going back to domestics. Toyota sludges engines and Hondas Transmission failures are running rampant. I always maintained my american cars. I always have to fix my imports.

Large companies claim to be competitive internationally they cannot afford the labor in America. There's the problem. The rest of the world's labor has no protection and are much cheaper to keep around. And that is too enticing for corporations without a moral compass.

The UAW has been giving back what may seem little by little for years. The reality of it is as Mr Moore said is too much. The corparate big shots even some of the plant foremans and for sure shift surpervisors, plant managers are raking in money hand over fist while they cry out that they (big 3) need help. But don't dare take from their 300K+ a year wages. The higher ups 3million a year+!!

The UAW in no way wrecked anything. They did make sure employees got a fair days pay for a days work and health care along with a fair retirement pension.
They certainly did not make any workers rich...they fought for workers to earn a days pay in a safe environment,enabled them wages that could afford them a decent life (middle class),and made sure that if sick or injured that the workers and their families could get health care.

If unions put their employees first and everything else second they'd be doing a great job. Instead, they're worried about their own jobs, their union trust accounts and their deals with management. That's why they're useless now, becuase now they've got something that can be taken away.
Unions actually worked better back when they were illegal and everyone knew the score.

Interesting comments on here. I'm a Brit and we're now in the situation over here where we have no British car makers and virtually no manufacturing industry of our own. A sad state of affairs and I'm afraid I hold our government (and Blair and Brown in particular) soley responsible for the mess we're all in. GM and Chrysler and Ford made great cars until about 72 or 73. Thats when government forced emission standards came into play. I remember chrysler trying to make a lean burn 440 magnum. The government should have given the companies time to create new motors instead of trying to make existing motors pass emissions test. Anyone remember the oldsmobile diesel motor? So now this is the same government that owns the car companies and telling them what to build again. Good Luck!

That would have nullified any agreements with the unions. Then they could have run and ad for new workers. The whole idea is to make a profit. THis new USGM has no chance of turning a profit as long as the UAW is there. I've bought my last American car.

I have an old 96 Nissan Sentra w/ 221,000 miles on it. That car has been so reliable. It will make 250, 000 w/ no problem. My next one will be a Nissan Versa. You can get a new one for about 9000 bucks. There is nothing built in the US that I will buy. I do not want a 6000 pound tank that gets 12 miles to the gallon. Mike Moore keep up the good work.
