I thought undertaker's first loss was against Hulk Hogan at Tuesday in Texas... I can't believe that in all the people they had to choose Santana to end his streak...
@owaisinus - SANTANNA OBVIOUSLY BEAT HIM BUT ALSO HOGAN NOT ONLY BEAT UNDERTAKER AT TUESDAY IN TEXAS BUT HE BEAT HIM A MONTH EARLIER (OCT. 91) -THAT IS A MONTH BEFORE SURVIVOR SERIES 91. IT WAS A COLISEUM HOME VIDEO EVENT. HOGAN PINNED TAKER WITH A SCHOOL BOY LIKE AT TUESDAY IN TEXAS EXCEPT HE WENT OVER CLEAN. SO HOGAN CLEANLY PINNED THE UNDERTAKER BEFORE THE UNDERTAKER EVER BEAT HOGAN...AND TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE TO DATE THE UNDERTAKER HAS NEVER CLEANLY PINNED HOGAN.

Yeah, they ran shows in Canada pretty regularly, but they weren't *the* promotion there yet. He wanted to squeeze out the other promotions the same way he did with the AWA et. al in the US. So the story goes, anyway.
The result here seems odd, considering that at the time, Undertaker was an up-and-comer and Santana had long been relegated to near the bottom of the star pool since his I-C title loss to Randy Savage.
@bearpaw72 I *think* this was around the time where Vince wanted to expand his business into Mexico, and they wanted to make Tito the WWF Champion in order for Mexican fans to get behind the WWF. However, Vince changed his mind and decided to expand into Canada instead, and gave the big push to Bret Hart instead. Just think of what might have been had Vince not changed his mind and went with Tito.
@whiteboy1815 That would have rejuvinated Santana's power ranking for sure, albeit VERY surprisingly and suddenly as compared to Hart, who was already INTO his own power ranking at that time.
Speaking of expanding - I always thought that McMahon had already expanded into Canada by the mid-1980s, since they regularly held cards in Southern Ontario, bought out Stampede in 1984, and held cards in Vancouver - where I live - at least 4 times a year.
@bearpaw72 I think the reason for this is because the Ultimate Warrior was orginally slated for this match with Taker. They wanted to keep the booking the same regardless of who faced Taker. Although maybe not, since Warrior got fired back in late August and this is from Oct 5, 1991. Maybe just a nice win for Santana for all of his hard work?
@Scoclamor Not true. The only reason why Santana got the win here is because he was the only Spanish speaking wrestler on the roster and had to go over in the main event in Spain as the "hometown favourite". The fact that the decision was OKd is because the match was only intended to air in Spain, so the outcome didn't affect Undertaker's streak, because nobody outside of Spain knew that he had lost.
Gimmeahellyeah1 like undertaker hasn't ever gotten help to win his matches. you should take a look at his fight against edge in WM were he gets help at the end from nature boy to beat edge, just accept that he lost
Typical white supremacist bullhshit. Undertaker put the referee so he could get hit. You ignore that. You try all you can to discredit "non-white" contestants.
Speaking of Boston Garden, that was where Tito lost the IC title to Randy Savage. In fact, Tito was all over Savage. The turning point was when Savage crawled from the centre of the ring jammed in Tits's Figure 4 leglock and made it to the rope. A few minutes later as Tito was in the process of slamming him, Savage poked him in the eyes with a metal probe. Tito fell down with Savage on top of him. Tito lost the belt. That was why Savage was depised for years. However, Tito couldn't get it back.
I saw Sid Vicious do a number on The Undertaker in a casket match at Boston Garden back in 1991. You would expect Undertaker to win but Sid Vicious lifted him up high in the air with one hand by the throat. The match ended with Vicious slamming Undertaker into the casket. The Undertaker has had his clocked cleaned up a few times. No one is invincible.
The reason why Santana won the match was because it was held in Barcelona, Spain, where his latino people would have appreciated this the most. Undertaker jobbed for him because he is a nice guy. It was Tito's moment.
The real mystery is how did Tito manage to convince the WWF to let him pin the Undertaker? Tito was usually the guy who lost and put everyone else over. You could probably count with one hand how many times he's won, but you'd lose count if you had to keep up with how many times he got destroyed.
Use youtube and check out Tito's career prior to 1989. The guy's win-loss record was the exact opposite. Still one of the best I-C champs ever. Lost track of how many people he successfully defended it against. His feud with Greg Valentine is one of the LLOONGGESTT I've ever seen and the hatred and brutality that came across in it is rarely seen today in these feuds of the month.
If that had aired in the states, it would have been the kiss of death to the Undertaker (no pun intended). At this point in WWF, the Undertaker was on the fast track to success, while Tito was yesterday's news and more or less hovered in the midcard for the remainder of his stay in the company, which would only another year or so.
This is clearly a non-canonical match, as he was billed as "undefeated" a month later at Survivor Series, where he won the title from Hulk Hogan.
I suppose 'cause it wasn't a clean victory WWE could argue it doesn't really count. But you're right, it may well have been the kiss of death for undertaker. If you look at house show results from 91 Undertaker also had pin fall losses to Randy Savage and Roddy Piper.
Yep! This is a pretty big win for Tito Santino because he is one few superstars that has had clean victories over Deadman Taker. The only others are Stone Cole, Kurt Angle, and Vladimir Kozlov
Read very very carefully: he is one of the superstars who has a "clean" victory over The Undertaker. By "clean", I means without breaking the rules or interference from others.
He lost clean to Hogan..Angle, however, defeated Undertaker following interference from Kurt's real life brother Eric Angle .Undertaker, however, dropped the title at Vengeance to The Rock in a Triple Threat match that also involved Kurt Angle.Orton defeated Undertaker in a WrestleMania rematch.
Read very very carefull. Very carefully: "Deadman" Taker has never lost cleanly. You brought up some matches during the Badass era. He also didn't lose "clean" to Hogan. Hogan used a steel chair in the rematch at This Tuesday in Texas ppv to regain the title. We're talking one on one. Orton never defeated Taker fair in square.
you're absolutely right jtbb2. My mistake. I meant to say this was Undertaker's few losses and even still it wasn't clean. His first clean loss was 8 years into his career as the Deadman in 1998 against Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin was the only superstar to defeat Taker clean throughout the 90s. His next one came at the hands of Kurt Anlge and then Kozlov
no, his loss to Kozlov wasn't around a time when he was in active. It was just before WrestleMania in March and he hadn't been inactive since the summer of last year. Besides, what does him being inactive have to do with it?
Err... I never heard that term 'inactive' used to described being older. First I've heard someone use "inactive" to describe that. Yea, he was older when he was defeated by Kozlov and Angle and his only other clean loss was from Austin when he was younger

Its quite clear the term Him is regarding Tito SANTANA HITTING THE UNDERTAKER WITH AN URN. aND WHY YOU THINK ANYBODY HAS TO RESPOND TO YOU IS MYSTIFYING
this wasn't a clean match. We all came to the bottom of that and that was taken care of if you read all the comments on the next page. I'm going to give you a piece of advice that I want you to hold dear to your heart; never ever ever butt in. Never butt into other people's business because chances are you don't know everything going on in their situation and you're going to end up making a pest out of yourself as you have. Goodbye dansaun77!
I thought Tito would have lost...but he didn't...kinda shocked...first favorite wrestler...and the Dragon Steamboat...then once Sting hit it was all over from there for me
These announcers suck. They barely even gave a damn. Undertaker tried to zip Tito in an airtight bodybag and kill him, basically. Tito then used his finisher twice and it didn't even drop Undertaker, then he gave him two piledrivers and it wasn't enough. THEN finally he had to hit him with his own urn and he actually BEAT THE UNDERTAKER...and they just shrug it off. Estupidos!
Watch some of the Tito's matches in the 80's. He was a star. When Vince went national with the WWF, Tito was the IC champion. That meant something back then. He had great feuds with Muraco, Valentine, Savage, and even when his star faded after the Strike Force run he still had some good feuds with Martel and Perfect. This was a shocking win for Tito over Undertaker, but Tito had a great career.
Tito was one of the best wrestlers at the time. If you were somebody who was worth a damn, you wrestled Tito Santana. If you had a good match with Tito, then you were ready to do to the next level.
It's not Chico Santana, only Jesse Ventura calls "Chico" to Tito Santana. I prefer when he was "El Matador", a Bullfighter Gimnick, and if he was WWE Champion...
Wow I never knew it was Tito Santana that handed The Undertaker his very first defeat it sure brings a lot of memories it sure is memorable to see Paul Bearer and The Undertaker together again just like their first debut during the year 1990's.
taker's first defeat televised. only televised in spanish speaking markets/countries. not mentioned/shown in any english broadcasts i believe. his first mainstream non- dq or count out loss came after this.
this is a show because undertaker is waye better than tito is because of the fans they let tito win undertaker but undertaker is better and tito now it
check your history if you're going to make such a dumb comment...tito is a legend in the business and who cares if he isn't as "cool" as taker and you prob think that cause you're a "new" fan
Spoken like a true newbie to professional wrestling. Tito's one of the best wrestlers ever to put on wrestling trunks. He'd have won the world title had he been in the NWA, away from the shadow of Hulk Hogan.
Back then the UNDERTAKER was a phenomenon, but also a rookie, and Tito Santana was a very experienced wrestler. Besides, WWE is mostly show and no Latino can loose in Barcelona... get it?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If Tito could beat Undertaker, Genius, Repoman, Bastion Booger, KOKO B WARE , Outlaw Ron Bass, The MOdel, Akeem , Brookly Brawler , LOch Ness , Pj Stock, could beat Undertaker. Tito always sucked THe model beat Tito and he gets to win over Undertaker
Back to what I said about the WWE ignoring their own continuity. Earlier this year, Taz mentioned that "Undertaker has never competed for the world title". We all know that isn't the case, lol.
Technically, at that time Taz was right... The World Heavyweight Title (Big Gold belt) and the WWE/F Title are 2 different belts... 'Taker has won the WWF Title 4 times...and when you posted this message he probably just started to challenge for the WH Championship.
That was the Undisputed Title... pretty much the WWF Title after it was unified with the WCW Title. The WCW Title was renamed the WH Title for a month after SS when the WWE "put the Alliance out of business"
I wish they would come back with the Undisputed title. That was great with multiple angles being played out at once. Now they have frickin 3 titles and one of them nobody cares about (ECW).
Actually Hogan beat the Undertaker at at least one House Show prior to Survivor Series "The Gravest Challenge". He beat him with a rollup from behind.
They like to fudge their own continuity so that's no surprise. If it's released on video worldwide, there's no logical reason why it wouldn't count. Then again, this is the WWE we're talking about.
Sean Micheals wrestled Ric Flair when Flair came to the company as "The Real World's Champion" in late 1991. The two later wrestled again in 2003 on RAW, I believe. The claim was "this is the first ever meeting between the two". Bogus!! The same thing happened with Chris Jericho and Goldberg. They wrestled a match on WCW Nitro and later at a WWE ppv which was also billed as the first ever match between the two (during the time Jericho beat him up backstage for real).
Booker T and Chris Benoit had a series of matches for the WCW television title most of which took place at house shows. Benoit won the belt a few times but only Booker's wins (winning the belt back) were acknowledged on WCW television. Back in the 80's, house show matches were acknowledged as some of them were taped and relevant to storylines. For example, Four Horseman/Dusty Rhodes related matches.
cenahater is right. Such matches dont count, and should be counted as friendly matches. After all look at undertakers reaction. He gets up and goes away so tito can celebrate with spanish fans. But the wwe could have made tito win against someone less immortal and invincible than the undertaker in his prime.
shit, tito won, thats like brooklen brawler beating hulk hogan, but its true,it depends on the country and its native, kevin nash complained this in a shoot, when he was in canada against one of the quebecces in a main event,ONE HALF OF A TAG TEAM IN THE MAIN EVENT.
you can diss triple h and orton if you want, but don't ever diss a once in a lifetime talent like HBK. Shawn Michaels is the best overall wrestler I have ever seen.
Ha ha! Yeah, I guess Tito had 7 consecutive steaks to go with his losses. Not a bad consolation prize. I guess that's why he slowed down as the years progressed.
WOW!I THOUGHT THE ONLY MATCHES TITO WON WERE NO NAMES.HE STILL HAD IN HIM YOU SAW HOW MANY TIMES HE HAD PERFECT,RIC FLAIR,SLAUGHTER BEAT.When he teamed with Hulk and Warrior Survior Series 90'he looked puny compared to them but he sure had heart. He still had so much to give Vince had him jobbing to everybody when he still could beat them all.
I guess, because the card was in Spain, they made Tito the sentimental favorite to win. It was kinda like the British Bulldog winning the IC title in England against Bret Hart. However, even so, this result was absolutely shocking. Especially when you consider the direction of the careers of these two guys at the time.
Maybe, because they are in Spain. But you must know that Tito Santana was one of the best wrestlers in the Golden Era and was Two times IC Champion and Two times World Tag team Champion never cheating as Triple H Levesque or many "wrestlers" that were Champions. He never was given a World Title shot as Garbage Triple H,Michaels,Edge, randy nothing Orton, etc. Every main Event These garbage have title shots.
Tito Santana was definitely a great wrestler. He had more wrestling ability in his pinkie than many of the guys out there now.
Unfortunately, wrestling runs on the "political game." Despite their lack of wrestling ability, guys like Triple H knew how to play "the political game" perfectly. That's why they made it to the top.
It was a disgrace that McMahon basically used Tito as a jobber late in his career. The final insult came when Mr. McMahon made Tito "The Matador."
You are right, chessarama. Tito was only an employee of the WWF. A difference of Jean Paul Levesque now called "Triple H". He is McMahon's son in law and he can do what ever he wants and create angle feuds against his real life friend HBK or any that sells his carrier as jobber as Big Show.
exactly chessarama, I saw Pete "Duke of Dorchester" Dorety beat SD "special delivery" Jones live in the Boston Garden on a saturday afternoon, they wrestled on tv less than a week later almost exacltly the same match, coreographed perfectly only SD Jones wins. they tour and polish their craft and put the best tape on TV, Tito could have won to keep the crowd from rioting.
Tito figured out Taker's weakness before anyone else did.

Undertaker today would destroy Tito! I'm sorry! but just look at him these days, I have never seen him that dominate in his 18 year WWF/WWE carrer!

friggin chico won..man thats not the way it shouldve gone..chico sells buritos..maybe he offered the undertaker a burito for the 123 fart pin

Also, classic match was Chico Santana vs. Macho Man in a Cage Match!
natureboy84 3 years ago
It's not Chico Santana, only Jesse Ventura calls "Chico" to Tito Santana. I prefer when he was "El Matador", a Bullfighter Gimnick, and if he was WWE Champion...

I remember Tito Santana made a tag team with Rick Martel known as "The Strike Force". Those were the good times of the WWF.

You're goddamned right he is.

Wow I never knew it was Tito Santana that handed The Undertaker his very first defeat it sure brings a lot of memories it sure is memorable to see Paul Bearer and The Undertaker together again just like their first debut during the year 1990's.

frig if i was the taker id choke slam brito tito sooooo hard to the canvas and double hook his legs for the big 1-2-3 fart pin

Great win for the arriba man!

Tito always ruled - he always lost because they booked him to put people over and make them look good - which he was very good at doing.
Nice to see him get a (albeit tainted) victory over such a big name.

taker's first defeat televised. only televised in spanish speaking markets/countries. not mentioned/shown in any english broadcasts i believe. his first mainstream non- dq or count out loss came after this.
robroy122 4 years ago
this is a show because undertaker is waye better than tito is because of the fans they let tito win undertaker but undertaker is better and tito now it
loooookoooo 4 years ago
i agree. that was really cheap. and by the looks of it, it was a Body Bag match. you're not supposed to win those by pin fall. what a shame
CCity00831 4 years ago
check your history if you're going to make such a dumb comment...tito is a legend in the business and who cares if he isn't as "cool" as taker and you prob think that cause you're a "new" fan
swINGpIn001 4 years ago
Spoken like a true newbie to professional wrestling. Tito's one of the best wrestlers ever to put on wrestling trunks. He'd have won the world title had he been in the NWA, away from the shadow of Hulk Hogan.

wow ilove the dead man under taker & i love to the tacticals and the way of the rapid move of the mexican tito santana .......

Back then the UNDERTAKER was a phenomenon, but also a rookie, and Tito Santana was a very experienced wrestler. Besides, WWE is mostly show and no Latino can loose in Barcelona... get it?

If Tito could beat Undertaker, Genius, Repoman, Bastion Booger, KOKO B WARE , Outlaw Ron Bass, The MOdel, Akeem , Brookly Brawler , LOch Ness , Pj Stock, could beat Undertaker. Tito always sucked THe model beat Tito and he gets to win over Undertaker

Yes! Tito was one of my faves. I gotta admit, it was rare to see Tito get a victory, but when he did, it was awesome.
I remember when he was the sole survivor in the Survivor Series match against the team captained by Sgt. Slaughter!

I can't believe they let Tito pin the Undertaker. That's so great...I always liked Tito, a real athlete with genuine actual wrestling ability.

Back to what I said about the WWE ignoring their own continuity. Earlier this year, Taz mentioned that "Undertaker has never competed for the world title". We all know that isn't the case, lol.
WarriorSmurf 4 years ago
Technically, at that time Taz was right... The World Heavyweight Title (Big Gold belt) and the WWE/F Title are 2 different belts... 'Taker has won the WWF Title 4 times...and when you posted this message he probably just started to challenge for the WH Championship.
iloveboobs5 4 years ago
Didn't UT beat Hogan for a belt after Hogan beat Triple H for one? Which belt was that? "Jack confused..."
WarriorSmurf 4 years ago
That was the Undisputed Title... pretty much the WWF Title after it was unified with the WCW Title. The WCW Title was renamed the WH Title for a month after SS when the WWE "put the Alliance out of business"
iloveboobs5 4 years ago
Ah, ok. A lot of that is a blur since it has down way downhill since. Thanks for the clarification.
WarriorSmurf 4 years ago
I wish they would come back with the Undisputed title. That was great with multiple angles being played out at once. Now they have frickin 3 titles and one of them nobody cares about (ECW).
cle17930 4 years ago
Actually Hogan beat the Undertaker at at least one House Show prior to Survivor Series "The Gravest Challenge". He beat him with a rollup from behind.
Lannis32 4 years ago
They like to fudge their own continuity so that's no surprise. If it's released on video worldwide, there's no logical reason why it wouldn't count. Then again, this is the WWE we're talking about.
WarriorSmurf 4 years ago
Sean Micheals wrestled Ric Flair when Flair came to the company as "The Real World's Champion" in late 1991. The two later wrestled again in 2003 on RAW, I believe. The claim was "this is the first ever meeting between the two". Bogus!! The same thing happened with Chris Jericho and Goldberg. They wrestled a match on WCW Nitro and later at a WWE ppv which was also billed as the first ever match between the two (during the time Jericho beat him up backstage for real).
WarriorSmurf 4 years ago
Booker T and Chris Benoit had a series of matches for the WCW television title most of which took place at house shows. Benoit won the belt a few times but only Booker's wins (winning the belt back) were acknowledged on WCW television. Back in the 80's, house show matches were acknowledged as some of them were taped and relevant to storylines. For example, Four Horseman/Dusty Rhodes related matches.

undertaker in his prime in 91? riiight
besides, Tito didnt cheat, he just played undertakers game, lol
red221985 4 years ago
cenahater is right. Such matches dont count, and should be counted as friendly matches. After all look at undertakers reaction. He gets up and goes away so tito can celebrate with spanish fans. But the wwe could have made tito win against someone less immortal and invincible than the undertaker in his prime.
knightmaneuvers2006 4 years ago
that was a corny win but of course he was gonna win think about it tito santana and they're fighting in barcelona spain any connection

Tito had a 7-consecutive match LOSING steak at Wrestlemania:
I - defeated The Executioner
II - w/Junkyard Dog, lost to The Funk Brothers
III - w/British Bulldogs, lost to Hart Foundation/Davis
IV - w/Rick Martel, lost to Demolition
V - w/Rick Martel, lost to Brain Busters
VI - lost to The Barbarian
VII - lost to The Mountie
VIII - lost to Shawn Michaels
I have respect for Tito, but I just thought this was an amazing achievement.

Ha ha! Yeah, I guess Tito had 7 consecutive steaks to go with his losses. Not a bad consolation prize. I guess that's why he slowed down as the years progressed.
chessarama 4 years ago
WOW!I THOUGHT THE ONLY MATCHES TITO WON WERE NO NAMES.HE STILL HAD IN HIM YOU SAW HOW MANY TIMES HE HAD PERFECT,RIC FLAIR,SLAUGHTER BEAT.When he teamed with Hulk and Warrior Survior Series 90'he looked puny compared to them but he sure had heart. He still had so much to give Vince had him jobbing to everybody when he still could beat them all.
mr10tomidnight 4 years ago
I guess, because the card was in Spain, they made Tito the sentimental favorite to win. It was kinda like the British Bulldog winning the IC title in England against Bret Hart. However, even so, this result was absolutely shocking. Especially when you consider the direction of the careers of these two guys at the time.
chessarama 4 years ago
Maybe, because they are in Spain. But you must know that Tito Santana was one of the best wrestlers in the Golden Era and was Two times IC Champion and Two times World Tag team Champion never cheating as Triple H Levesque or many "wrestlers" that were Champions. He never was given a World Title shot as Garbage Triple H,Michaels,Edge, randy nothing Orton, etc. Every main Event These garbage have title shots.
omonteshashimoto 4 years ago
Tito Santana was definitely a great wrestler. He had more wrestling ability in his pinkie than many of the guys out there now.
Unfortunately, wrestling runs on the "political game." Despite their lack of wrestling ability, guys like Triple H knew how to play "the political game" perfectly. That's why they made it to the top.
It was a disgrace that McMahon basically used Tito as a jobber late in his career. The final insult came when Mr. McMahon made Tito "The Matador."
chessarama 4 years ago
You are right, chessarama. Tito was only an employee of the WWF. A difference of Jean Paul Levesque now called "Triple H". He is McMahon's son in law and he can do what ever he wants and create angle feuds against his real life friend HBK or any that sells his carrier as jobber as Big Show.
omonteshashimoto 4 years ago
exactly chessarama, I saw Pete "Duke of Dorchester" Dorety beat SD "special delivery" Jones live in the Boston Garden on a saturday afternoon, they wrestled on tv less than a week later almost exacltly the same match, coreographed perfectly only SD Jones wins. they tour and polish their craft and put the best tape on TV, Tito could have won to keep the crowd from rioting.
