On the OBD1 MKIII Jettas with the longer third brake light bar (OBD2 have the shorter stubby style), all the lamps (all fourteen of them) are incandescent. I just modded them to LED so I wouldn't have to worry about replacing them in the future when they inevitably burn out.
I know your post is old...but for anyone else wondering. You can buy direct replacement LED bulbs that are plug and play and have the resistors built in. Just make sure you get the right ones!
