I remember when they played this song when I saw them live, John said he had forgiven his father, I guess they had a bad relationship, THEN they played this song, which destroyed everything he had said previously. One of the most bitter things I have ever heard, and I know what it means to forgive people who have hurt you terribly, things that cant be undone. This is not it.

He (John) explains that it's about getting rid of a negative influence in your life, and finally realizing that it's them that is bringing you down which applies to the scriptures "Do not be unequally yoked" and 1 Corinth. 15:33 “Bad company corrupts good character.” A song of realization not bitterness. @YeshuaReinaSiempre Actually many songs by many bands are not clear. It's normal. That way it is open to interpretation which is what Skillet does. If they filled their songs with scriptures then not as much people would listen to the band. Which is also why they don't call themselves a christian band, so they appeal to more people however their songs almost always have Christian morals or are based off of scripture. If they made it clear would youth listen to it as much? I don't thinks so.

Jesus was related through story telling and so is Skillet. And yes the Word is in their songs just in ways that people can relate to like "Rebirthing" (being born again) etc. But if you don't agree that's fine. Just don't listen, sir.

"I'll do what I want because this is my life." refers to staying true to who he is. Also Open wounds is not about bitterness exactly but about explaining the pain that he went through. That doesn't mean that he doesn't forgive, it means that it still hurts. John is a christian but the band is not a Christian band.

@YeshuaReinaSiempre Umm, I may be wrong here, but when people (like musicians) go through something tragic/ terrible they usually express themselves through their music. Even though he is Christian he still needs to vent/ express that pain. Yes he forgave his father, but it doesn't mean the wounds have healed. Acknowledging what happened is just the first step, then comes forgivness. Sometimes, if you keep the past a secret, it somehow enters your future. He needed to do this song.
