Yes George Harrison's My sweet Lord recorded in 1970 was inspired by the 1967 recording of Hawkin'ns O Happy Day which was taken from a hym written in the 18th century originally in 3/4 time. Hawkins was the first and inspired a number of songs after this recording which were influenced by "HIS" recording.
This would be the last Gospel song to crack the top 40 charts (1969).It wan't until 1980 when Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody " Would chart on the top 40.
