Yeah, Cheney played a role (He was VP at the time, after all), but it was not about him or oil. In college, even my history professor who hated Bush/ Cheney, frequently criticized conservatives, and was so liberal that some of his friends nicknamed him "Lefty," has said that he doesn't believe the Iraq war is about oil. Bill Maher has wished death on people (i.e. when Cheney was in the middle east and survived a terrorist attack, Maher said it was unfortunate that Cheney wasn't killed), mocked and celebrated the deaths of people (i.e. Steve Irwin, Pope John Paul II), and he too has advocated ruining the lives of people (i.e. he recently put up a website to try and encourage Bristol Palin's fiancee to abandon her and the baby). Maher is practically the high- prist of hate- mongering.

I'd have to check the context of these statements, but it sounds to me more like irreverent humor rather than genuine wishing of death upon others. But then again, I don't really know, or really care.
