hi, the layout is in a shed which is 16ft x 8ft, at the time before building this seemed enough, however the curves are tighter than i would have liked, i wish i had got 18ft by 10 ft now, always wish it was bigger though!!
i know what you mean,iv gone from an attic, approx 25 x 20, to an 10 x 8 shed, due to a house move,iv been trying to design a layout for this space but keep finding the curves are ending up very sharp & unsatisfactory, can you offer any advice in ragard to gradients, i think the best way forward is a multi level approach to ensure i get the content i want but im unsure how steep i should go,? and any other advice would be good as this is my first permenent attemp
I have thought about the multi level aspect myself to add interest, my thoughts on this because of the constraints of my current layout is running a completely seperate double track oval underneath the present baseboards that would appear at the front through a tunnel and run at a lower level with retaining walls to make it look like a freight line which runs under the station, the tracks would then disappear under the station. gradients are always difficult, most models except steam cope well.
another thought here which is something i find hard to do, is to rein in your ideas and build something to fit the space, personally i wanted everything, a depot, a yard and a station, i managed it but with some sacrifice to realism and also operation, i have heard of people getting great enjoyment out of the most basic layouts, ie a diesel depot or a small rural station with bigger trains passing through with maybe a couple of freight sidings. my layout is complex, 3 people ideally to operate.
because it requires 3 people ideally to operate it, i struggle to run it by myself in the way i designed it, 1 person could do mainlines, 1 person freight and branch line and another for the depot, i do get a great deal of enjoyment from the layout, i like to be able to just about run scale length trains from the period, operationally it is taxing though. the biggest issue i had with a shed was damp and water, we eventually got a tent groundsheet from a camping shop which has stopped roof leaks
Very nice layout! If you haven't looked at my vid yet, I've posted a link so here it is, UK 00 as well, so thought you may be interested! Keep up the great work! John
