Don't get me wrong. I like both versions I love the Beatles too. I grew up with the original version and so tend to like that one better. I grew up listening to the Beatles as well and like their music as well.
""Twist and Shout" is a song WRITTEN by Phil Medley and Bert Russell. It was originally REORDED by the Topnotes and the Isley Brothers and was later re-arrangned to sound fairly different by The Beatles who made the song famous. Basically anyone who covers the song today does a cover of The Beatles' arrangement.
The Beatles' version of the song was based on the Isley Brothers hit in 1962. The Isleys drasically changed the song from the original by the TopNotes and all covers are based on the Isley interpretation.
if i was on stage and those fine girls started grinding up on me i could say this is better than the beatle's cover, but i'm not on stage, and so it isn't.
When are going to stop bawling and complaining about being ripped off. Appreciate a better version. The Beatles version is better in my opinion- and that's my opinion and that of many others- so let it be.
Sadly, very few people would have heard of this song had the Beatles not covered it. it is sad to see how hate and jealousy blind you to the truth. Such are the ways of the world
@Reachingoutagain Si sampling ripping off - man the whole black music industry these days is based on robbing it'd own vaults. Is that paying credit - or ripping off??
I met Ernie Isley. He talks about riding an elevator, and the Beatles got on after having a monster hit with this Isley tune. Life is stranger than fiction.
I'm old school this was the no. 1 on the pop charts in 1958. Bobby Darin had the biggest song 1959 remember Mack The Knife. The original version is better. The Beatles did this song word for word, note for note.
Who is the guy in the Blue Suit is he part of the band or is he a gate crasher!!! its a good live version by the Isley Brothers ...but its hard to beat the Beatles version with John Lennon singing
@hungryherbie Oh well my point was that I think it's unfair to compare a live version made by a senior artist to a studio version made by guys in their early 20's.
@hungryherbie I was just gettin ready 2 talk about yo dumb ass, but then I looked at ur web page & noticed ur from over seas. So my appology! The man in da blue suit is 1 of my favorite DJ's in da world. His name is Tom Joyner. I've been listening 2 him since the 80's when he had a show in Dallas. He is a Legend here in da States. 2 me he looks quite cool doing a fine version of da twist. He's got a notorious sidekick name J Anthony Brown dat should have been up there twistin his ass off wit TJ

@Doreen882 There is old saying that the original is the best but sometimes but rarely the original can be improved on and this the case here.. I believe The Beatles
with John Lennon singing made it better but not by much ...but no doubt The Isley Brothers made a great live performance here
@AlienTruth Well that's something I didn't know that Top Notes made the original version .well I looked them up and to be honest I wasn't impressed at all ..if I was to give it marks out of 10 it would be only 4 where as Isley Bros. 7...and the Beatles..
9..not sure if you would agree or not but there you have it......cheers
@sharodu Yes your right about the DJ in the blue suit thanks for the info and what a great live performance by The Isley Brothers top drawer stuff..cheers herbie
@hungryherbie The Beatles based their version off the Isley Brothers. The orginal "Shake it up, Baby" came out in '61. Isley brothers remade into the now famous version in '62. The Beatles did a cover of th Isley Brother's version in '63. I like the isley's orginal recording of it the best. But yeah, the Beatles version is amazing too :)
True, It was originally done by the topnotes, but I liked the STUDIO produced version done by the Isley Brothers. The Beatles did it later, but were inspired by the Isley version.
It's okay... would be nice though, as a show, if the dancers would get synchronized. It looks kinda lazy when two or three of them are moving in unison and the others can't stay on the beat.
Phil Medley? You don't mean Bill medley of the Righteous Brothers? They would have kicked ass with this song...why is Ron Isley in Jail? that sucks. I hope people left him alone in there, he's a great artist.
Rock Classic... who ever performs it the "Original" (TopNotes) is cool as posted earlier. It was an early Phil Spector production.... FREE RON ISLEY!
They're still great at this. Good as it is, this is just another cover of their original 45, which is only on YouTube as a speaker2mike transcription. I don't think any cover versions came close to the maniacal, almost demonic sound of that record, certainly not the Beatles'. Drums, guitar, vocals and reverberation, just come out of the speakers and attack you. I don't think anyone, even the Isley Brothers, will ever match what was on that record; hope someone posts a full fidelity clip of it.
