At 6.25 min into the video you can see the old telephone switch board BT still use this stuff today 2010 if you dont beleve me ring 150 and it take ages till doris or margret to connect you ! hee hee !
i had completely forgotten about FiveStar until i happened across this clip! I LOVE the wonderfully un-American approach to the performance video. So beautifully British, thought up at the last moment extravaganza ! No one does small fry like us Brits ! Can't wait to see our follow up to the Beijing Olympics Opening ceremony :P I do remember watching Pebble Mill a lot, but maybe was too young to take it in...Was it like a Blue Peter for Adults or something ?...
I lived in Rednal in the 1980's and used to pass Pebble Mill every day on the 63 bus-sometimes would see filming as the bus passed pebble mill road-great times!
WOW! brings back some good memories. I used to watch a bit of Pebble Mill at One on my lunch break from school. Such a shame that todays mid-day TV is full of rubbish dramas and pointless DIY/Auction shows. Thanks for posting, much appreciated!
OMG, genius. How mad and funny is that? You wouldn't see Beyonce jumping around on a roof or in the phone room, ha, ha! Bless them - they must have been recording that for hours!
Love it - thank you for the memoris of PM@O and the Pearsons larking about.
Thanks for posting these, a bit of BBC TV history. I was only 10 at the time but can just about remember the show Pebble Mill at One, live from Birmingham. Great memories from the 80's!
Of course they mimed it LOL. Can you imagine them singing live in about twenty different locations and trying to pick up and mix the live sound from all of those? :-D
the BBC destroy their programmes, now destroying the dwellings where the now wiped programmes came from.i used to work at a tv company and they always had the BBC come in and hire the studios and tech staff.
Great video. It's just a shame that the incompetent bosses at the BBC were too shortsighted to see what they were doing when they moved to the Mailbox (aka The Shoebox). The original budget for the move was £40m, but this was dwarfed by the final cost of near £120m. They have split the production across several sites which includes the Horsefair, Drama Village (two buildings for the Doctors production), and OB stores.
Pebble Mill didn't open until 1971. Funny how the BBC used to manage perfectly well in old theatres and other buildings. Nowadays, when they don't actually use any studios for drama (all shot on location) and equipment is much smaller, they need to spend millions on purpose built studios and moving depts around every couple of years. Millions that could be spent on programmes and staff (not managers and execs) are spent on new buildings, studios and offices.
Pebble Mill would have cost a bomb to refurbish, it was literally falling to bits when I visited in 1999. The building itself only had a life expectancy of about 60 years and I think it had already gone over that!
And people mock The One Show. How quickly they forget.

Surely they could have refurbished PM and moved a lot of production up from London thereby offsetting much of the cost.

It costs £ 40,000,000 a year to be at the mailbox
It would have cost £32,000,000 to refurbish Pebble Mill for 30 years

Now BBC apparently looking to move out of the Mailbox to a new site as it is too small for their needs!!!!
Did no-one think of refurbishing Pebble Mill and making it into a broadcasting icon we could be proud of?
Typical British Incompetence!!!

An absolute travesty that this building was destroyed.
