  • i m suffering from depression from last few weeks n this song is giving me the relief...amazing

  • read a question asking if toppa is bengali. this is not a toppa but had toppa alankar in it as many of tagore's taalchhara gaan have. toppa's routes are in punjab (pakistani punjab to be precise) - it is fabled to be the music of the camel-drivers. the jerksof a camel ride being depicted by the typical tappa-style jerky alankars.

  • @..tamalde...aggye hya, apni thikee dhorechen, egulo-kei toppa bole...

  • great work buddy...do u have the following song..."tori amaar hothat dubey jai"

  • These type of rabindrasangeet are called taalchara gaan; thats why they are usually accompanied by tanpura only!

  • Amar money hoy ei guli ke Toppa anger Robindra Shangeet bole... The kind for which Kanika was famous for...

  • This place is Tagore´s house, in Kolkatta. Tagore is pure inspiration.

  • this is not jorasanko thakurbari. this is a house near beadon street at north calcutta

  • Thanks Saugatapalit...:)

  • Excellent !!

  • Lovely bhajan- would love to know some of the main lyrics in English- do not speak Bengali.

  • Hi this is not a bhajan...this is a song by Rabindranath Tagore. This song probably falls in the 'toppa' genre. as far as i know, 'toppa' songs do not have fixed beats and therefore are not accompanied by tabla or drums.

  • is a toppa style specifically bengali?

  • I am impressed both by the beauty of the music and the video.

Just wish, the sound would be clearer, but the dove in the beginnig adds its own beauty :)

  • a very good song..

  • One of my favourite...and the best...

  • love the tranqulity of this song. love it.

  • beat it

  • this is sohini halder............daughter of rudraprasad sengupta and swatilekha sengupta and wife of goutam halder. she won national award as supporting actress for that film

  • This song was sung by Jayashree Das Gupta, One of the emminent singers of Kolkata. She has an exceptional voice.

  • jayati or jayanti something

  • can anyone please tell me who actually sang the song - i knw she is not a proffessional artiste (coz thats what aparna sen said)but i think we should still know who it was...

  • amar sab cheye prito gaan gulor akta. Thank you for uploading such a class.

  • wow.. amazing! Thank you so much... I agree with you totally regarding interpretation of lyrics... yet its so wonderful to have something to start the journey, the journey through the song... listening it agian and again...finding out a little bit more each time. This song, dont know why, fills me with emotions beyond description. Once again...thank you so much for posting this song and offering non bengalis some light into the meaning of the song. thank you.

  • My Pleasure man.....

however, i gotto say, i feel i kinda stretched myself there! Never translated a tagore ever before, maybe i crossed certain limits there.. my fellow bongs mite take some offence on that one!

I wish to formally apologise if i've abused the translation in any way folks.. :)

  • Ha ha ha... I am sure they all will be proud of you! if you wish to translate more I have a whole bunch of requests to place!!! Dont worry all Tagore songs!

  • Thank you once again... what a wonderful song

  • @nicolaigogol : i doubt if many "fellow-bongs" could actually object to your translation with any justification, for the philosophy of the song is a pretty distant and inaccessible one!

personally, as one of them at least, i appreciate your effort but would just offer one suggestion - maybe you could try to re-organise your translation in the form of a poem?

  • na na.. bhalo korechho shetai janachhi.. chap khachho kyano?

  • cool.... :)

never doubted u for a second there bud!

  • guru, korechho ki!

  • hahaah.... ki abar korlam he ?

  • Lovely song! I would be greatful if some one can post the meaning of the lyrics as well. Thank you so much.

  • Well.... posting the lyrics mite not be that difficult, but the interpretation will have to be one's own i'm afraid. U see one has to understand the context of the movie/characters along wid the deeper insight that this particular tagore song brings here. I'll try n post strictly a lyrical translation of the meaning n leave it at that.

I think all those who know bengali here will undrestand that it's beyond us to try n translate Tagore in any form, ever. :)

  • Here goes the translation of the song:

[Bengali] Hridoy amaar prokash holo anonto aakashe.. Bedon-banshi uthhlo beje bataashe

Ei-je aalo-r aakulata, e to jani amaar katha- Pheere eshe amaar pran-e amaare udaashe baire tumi nana beshe phero nana chhole; Janine to amaar mala diyechhi kar gale..

Aajke dekhi paran-majhe, tomar galae shob mala je- Shob niye shesh dhora dile gabheer shorbonashe

  • [english] part 1 My soul (conciousness) realises itself among the eternal skies (This Universe) today The sad-tuned flute fills the air around

This desperate need that the light has, it's very much my story too- It comes back to haunt my soul/heart.. fills them with sorrow

  • [english] part 2 And as You showed your presence in this world outside (Outside My Inner Self) in so many forms; I was not sure which form i had presented my garlands to..

Today I see in my heart, my garlands donnes on You- Today You have given Yourself up to me.. with all that I had offered You in all it's Dangerousness and finality

  • At least you have tried with your capacity.

We should have a full scale web site of Rabindranath with english transations of his poems and songs.
