Technically, the ball went back to the team it belonged too.. I am far from a UNC fan (UK Wildcat fan here) and would have much rather seen Mich win it that year, but Chris webber traveled before he called the timeout when he got the rebound.. So they shouldn't have gotten the free throws but at least the ball....
its over time in the NCAA championship game, i'd be just a bit tired too. If i heard one of my teammates yell for me to call Time Out, i'd call time out too. Some of you fools act like you've played an entire game and overtime, let alone a championship game
@ProjectX30 LOL YOU STUPID??? Fucking moron I dislike LeBron just as much as the next person I'm tired of seeing these comments from fucking dumbasses like you saying that bullshit. You and all the other dumbfucks who just assume someone is a Lebron fan cause they're fucking tired of seeing that shit everywhere are so fucking stupid. Ride your own dick bitch.
espn 30 for 30 fab five episode is pretty good but the ending was stupid. ultimately it was webbers fault he choked he didnt want to take the last shot. but in 30 for 30 they were blaming bench players for telling webber to call a timeout. its pretty dumb. Webber choked plain and simple
i feel bad for this guy...he had enough talent to win 2 ncaa championships, but was just unlucky. he had enough talent to win the 2002 NBA championship with the Kings, but David Stern wanted the Lakers. poor guy
And to those that think its stupid to be given a tech for this is just plain retarded. Of course its a technical foul if it wasn't people would be overcalling timeouts all day potentially tricking teams to sag off for a split second or two thinking the player called a timeout.
@Power2People59 This rule, if I remember right was a reaction to the Paul Wesphal incident in the 1976 NBA finals when he called an illegal timeout to get the ball back with a second left. (The Celtics only got one free throw for this making it a genius move at the time.)
That said, Chris tried to call that timeout 3 different times at 2 different parts of the floor. The referee let it go because he didn't want the game to come down to that.
This and many other reasons is why Chris Webber well never be deemed has a top nba player in history to me. He choked in 2002 with the kings multiple times as well. Very skilled basketball player but a huge choke artist and known for it. I mean who screws up this bad? Not only traveling but thinking you have a time out left? Can't say I've ever seen a star choke this horrible I don't care how young he was. He choked in several key moments as a King as well.
how mad do you think it makes chris webber that after all the trash that he talked he still ended his career with 0 Championships and if you put in Chris Webber on Youtube the Timeout is the 3rd search result. what an unlucky guy
@firewalker0727 Yep. it also looks like he was about to call a TO after the rebound, then he walks. and after dribbling up court he changes his pivot foot while spinning around and calling a TO. you can see some of the NC players making the travelling signal because they think that is what the whistle was for.
Life will throw us bad memories that we'll carry the rest of our lives. this is what fueled him to be one of the greatest forwards that ever played the NBA...
@MrMartsMadness, how far are you extending that list for "one of the greatest?" I'm just curious. I think C-Webb was good, but If you were including all forwards in general I don't see him in the top 30 really. I could see saying he was one of the greatest forwards that ever played for the Sacramento Kings.
@aj22one I still count them regardless of what they say, or where the banners went. So do most I talk to. Revoke them for some bs lmao.. I could see if they cheated, but not the reason they did it.
@shaydyknight Yeah I completely agree. I was more making fun of the fact that the NCAA expects everyone to pretend like these games never happened. Same with Memphis in 2008.
fuck you racists on here acting like your tough I'd like to see you act like such a tough guy in front of a crowd of black people or in front of Chris webber then your mom would pretend to be sad about the end of our useless life at your funeral you white trash pieces of shit fuck off
Hey it's bad enough they get hassled because they are black, so what?! Don't act like your so perfect because your white and don't even try to act like you would never make that mistake under that type of pressure!
First of all, Chris was rushing the whole time on that last possesion.. He shuda jus took his time.. There was enough time on the clock for him to give it to Jalen or dribble up the court hiself like he did in the game.. But he rushed things, it was exactly 17 seconds on thr clock wen he started dribbling, all he had to do was take his time and relax.
@boxcarracer184 Never did shit? 5 time NBA All Star, Rookie of the Year, over 20 ppg, $176,000,000 of earnings. I'm sure he is crying in his mansion about his NBA career and his hard life. But you are right he never achieved anything.
Wrong! Kings fans are the biggest bitches ever. Yea they put up a valiant effort but still lost to LA. Even if they would have beaten LA it's not a guarantee they would have won a ring against the Nets. LA dominated the Nets bc of Shaq. The Kings didn't have a player with the impact of Shaq. And Chris Webber was indeed an underachiever both in college and the pros...
Jalen should have went to the ball when chris grabbed the rebound, that's what a point guard does, if he's trapped , you go to the ball, but yea one play didn't decide that game
Webber should've dribbled to the rim and dunk the shit out of it. HE WAS A GREAT DRIBBLER!!! End of game. Period. Webber was practically that much more talented than anyone in the court at that time. There was a reason after that major league monumental choke that he was still the #1 pick of the draft.
one seriously dumbass mistake defined that guy's career. come one, what do you think about when you hear the name "chris webber"? i feel for the guy. he was a monster on the court and the fab 5 ruled for 2 years. the thing is... he didn't directly lose the game. he directly lost the chance to win. had the ref called the travel, the other time might not have scored and MI might have. he didn't lose it, he only sealed it the loss.
If u look at the play just and I mean immediately before Webber travels it appears for a millisecond that Chris gestures his hand as if he wanted to call time out and had a brain freeze that prompted the travel. What do u think?
jus watched the doc for the first time. really great watch. also doesnt hurt that steve fisher is coaching my favorite college b ball team. GO AZTECS!
What people should be concerned with is the ref not calling the walk that he committed after he rebounded the ball. Are you freaking kidding me? If the ref would of made the call that should of been made he never would of had to look like an idiot. If someone would of spent some time with Chris when he was in High School going over basic basketball intangibles he would have been the best Center/Forward to play the game imo
@mobywv thats what i'm saying. Fab Five was good but they were never a championship team and they didnt have what it takes. maybe if they would of actually learned some basketball instead of talking mad shit they would of been great.
@Cuchulainn131 good! do you know how much money everyone was making off these kids? They were responsible for merchandise sales going through the roof- i understand you can't be paid to play a college sport but its also a business, if its selling a product for profit so its ok to exploit the kids for rich to get richer but the actual talent should be restricted from seeing any form of financial gain from their own successes? I dont know what hte answer to the problem is, but its not right, now.
Sure the school made money off them. That's not the problem. The problem is when one school is paying kids more than a quarter of a million dollars and the others are not. That creates a huge advantage as you have a professional basketball team in the college ranks. The fab 5 were among the biggest cheats in college sports history and deserve to have all their wins vacated.
@Cuchulainn131 Who cares if they get paid to play college ball everyone needs a little extra cash.If another company came to you and said we'll pay you for doing what you do for free you would take it and if you say otherwise youre not an honest person.
I think Webber just panicked after realizing that he almost choked epically with a walk a few seconds earlier, except the ref missed it. So he just wanted to regroup his thoughts, except he forgot that he didn't have a time out left to do that.
@FootballBoi815 So C-Webb knew what he was doing? Damn if he rigged this championship game Ima lose a lot of respect for him cause he was one of my fav players growing up. I still listen to him on NBA TV and I would think he's a type of person that wouldnt do something like that, sad. Wheres the story though I want to read it?
Wow. Calls timeout first -- ref doesn't see it -- then he travels but the ref chooses again not to call it, even after being in the perfect position to do so; CALLS timeout which the ref finally calls and then CWebb starts bitching at one of his teammates (I think it was Talley) for, presumably, "making" him call a timeout. This ultimately wasn't only an epic choke but an impressive SERIES of chokes put together by this all-time great.
The most overrated PF to ever play the game for sure...never a great scorer...but thought he was so he chucked up 20+ shots all the time. IN 01 when he averaged 27.1ppg he had to take 23.4 shots....that is just awful lol...that is a chucker defined...
btw it was called the ed martin scandal for anyone who doesn't know. I wanted to let you guys know because people are saying it was a "choke" but no way. He had rose right there (ik he had a defender on him but cwebb could make that pass ez) and that travel looked too fake (he did it in slow motion sorta) and then running straight into the corner of the court? CWebb knew he would be trapped and have a perfect chance to call a TO (most likely he knew they had none left) Thumb up so ppl can c plz
@FootballBoi815 dude the ref admitted years down the road that he looked away when webber tried to call timeout the first time (right after he rebounded the FT) bc he knew it would be a technical and he felt sorry for him, that's why he didnt see the obvious travel right afterwards. the ed martin scandal was about a michigan booster, ed martin, paying players to come to michigan. learn the facts and holla back.
You know why he did it right? He was betting on the game with guys that were offering him money if he rigged the loss. He admitted to it in 1999 if you don't believe me. Michigan was not allowed to the tourny for 7 years. If you don't believe me look it up. Thumbs up so people know.
"first he called a timeout and got away with it. Then he he travelled and got away with it. Then he ran to the corner and got trapped. And called another timeout which screwed his team. "
Screwed his team, but lined his and his teammate's pockets with Ed Martin gambling money. Coincidentally, just before Ed Martin was going to speak through a plea deal he winds up dead. 30 for 30 is coming and I hope they break the Fab Five WIDE open.
i've heard about this from almost 20 years...never see before...why in the hell the referees didn't call!?! yeah maybe cause he was n 1 prospect...hate referees!
first he called a timeout and got away with it. Then he he travelled and got away with it. Then he ran to the corner and got trapped. And called another timeout which screwed his team.
@keverinkarama No, picking up (or sliding) your pivot foot without dribbling is a travel. He didn't catch the ball into a run. He was set and started moving without dribbling.
@keverinkarama The 3 step rule is mostly when you pick up your dribble, but yeah you're allowed steps when you get a looseball or a pass or sometimes a rebound. Not everytime, though. It's mostly when you don't have total control of the ball yet
Chris Webber was a solid NBA player, but this incident proved what everyone in the NCAA and the NBA already knew. When there's only a few seconds left in the game and someone must step up to making the game winning shot, do NOT pass the ball to Webber. He never could handle the pressure of winning a game at the last minute for his team and this amazing lapse of judgment confirmed this fact.
Being from DC, I used to love the Bullets. Then, a nightmare came to town. We traded 3 number ONE draft picks and Tom (about 20ppg, 9rpg) Gugliotta for this asshole.
Webber thought he should be GM and said we should get Latrell Chokeacoach Sprewell. Then he's caught smoking a doobie on Central Avenue on his way to practice in his tinted window Cadillac. Luck had nothing to do with his career just stupidity. If he goes to HOF , the busts of the stars will come alive and shit on Webber's face !
ok he got away with a travel, forget the timeout he travelled!!!!

3 mental errors in a row... the refs only caught the last one though.

jc1393 10 months ago

How is this Chris Webber? The crawl says Redskins sign Adam Archuleta that happen in 2006 and Chris Webber was in the NBA by then not in college.

FootballBoi815 1 year ago
@FootballBoi815 dude the ref admitted years down the road that he looked away when webber tried to call timeout the first time (right after he rebounded the FT) bc he knew it would be a technical and he felt sorry for him, that's why he didnt see the obvious travel right afterwards. the ed martin scandal was about a michigan booster, ed martin, paying players to come to michigan. learn the facts and holla back.
kemp10 1 year ago
@FootballBoi815 you're completely incorrect
Tigersfan829 11 months ago

30 for 30 is coming and I hope they break the Fab Five WIDE open.

keverinkarama 1 year ago
@keverinkarama He slid his pivot foot before he put the ball on the court
Kurasuke 1 year ago
@Kurasuke wouldn't that equal to one step? which isnt a travel?
keverinkarama 1 year ago
@keverinkarama No, picking up (or sliding) your pivot foot without dribbling is a travel. He didn't catch the ball into a run. He was set and started moving without dribbling.

@Kurasuke ah so when you recieve a pass from a teammate is where the 3 steps rule applies to...
keverinkarama 1 year ago
@keverinkarama The 3 step rule is mostly when you pick up your dribble, but yeah you're allowed steps when you get a looseball or a pass or sometimes a rebound. Not everytime, though. It's mostly when you don't have total control of the ball yet

haha thats some guilty sub-conscience shit
