Wow..just...wow..I bet that pilot could ride the hell out of a unicycle. no seriously, I wish I could have seen that in person. I would have bought his drink.
Looks like B-17G-65-BO 43-37535 (JW-F) "Baby Button." Received into Station #109 Podington 05 June 1944. Went MIA over Kassel, Germany 22 Sept 44 with Lt. Maurce J. Sample pilot (MACR 9371). Same pilot supposedly that had to crash land into Belgium with B-17G 42-97217 (JW-L), named after my mother, "Punkin," 05 August 1944 coming back from Berlin. Had to crash land into Podington with Engines 1 & 4 out and a flat left tire from an earlier mission. Did repairs and out she went again.
Balls of steel.Fly into enemy territory ,get the shit shot out of you and then face this coming home.Straight to the pub after de-brief.great plane,Great clip.
Do any of these people think for a minute that the ball gunner had time to take a seat elsewhere on the airplane for the ditching procedure ? The ball wasn't sealed shut for the duration of the flight, the gunner could get out if he wanted to.
Awesome footage!... what's sad is that these boys were probably back up and bombing the next day in another bird! - People just aint as tuff these days.
My dad Leonard Blush Jr was stationed here during the war and was a tailgunner on a crew of a B17F. Wish I had the name of his plane, ..he passed away several years ago...sigh. Thanks so much for posting these!!
That's pretty incredible. TC you have another video of a B-17 belly landing on a grassy field and I assumed it was because the pilot decided that doing it with landing gear down would be a bad move. This proves me wrong.
@49kasey alot of the decision to land gear up or 1 down was based on the ball turret gunner. if he was able to get out of the turret they would belly it in. if he was unable to get out they would do everything to keep the weight off that turret. if the hydralics were shot up and the gear wouldnt come down that also meant the belly turret gunner was stuck in the turret and a belly landing would kill him.
they are so young i have my 3 years old kid and he is so exited to be apilot , yesterday we went to the B-17 and he can't go away from this amaizing bomber , thanks for the video .
f you like the B17 i have a story for u in 1943 UK east harling . An american airman took to war with him a coin SEAL it was his fathers .The coin was very soon to become the good luck Icon for the base and then all of the other bases.Unknown to them they were carrying the seal of god on their missions. The coin was one of four sewn into Jesus cloke it had been past hand to hand to this momentin time Hitler had to go .See The real christos coin u tube to see the mission

yeah they pretty much did with that one wheel landing thing and the reading of the letters from the dead scene were this officer was reading some letters about dead crew members while there was a clip showing B17's blowing out from the sky

@usselliot76 Hi pleased you enjoyed the clip did you see all the others on my channel all clips I have taken from a DVD which I have produced called (THE DOC FURNISS WAR) which runs for aprox 1hr 30 mins, the films were loaned to me many years ago by the DOC and I transfered them to digital DVD,
I'm sitting here looking through my dad's WW2 photos(he was an army aircraft mechanic at Podington ) and a site linked me to these vids.Wow;really brings it all to life.Wish my dad was alive to see these....He used to talk about the expertise of the crews bringing these battered planes in "...on a wing and a prayer"
Incredible to think that for about 20 years, I lived only a few miles from podington and used to take my mountain bike in and around the area.
Many is the time that on a sultry summers evening, I would emerge from the woods at the end of the main runway, drop my bike over the fence and then pedal up the main runway (now a drag race strip). At the top end, out of sight of the start line and looking over the tower, you could almost imagine the sound of B17's thundering... incredible.
Wow amazing landing. That Pilot could of been a 18 year old boy landing a 4-engined behemoth. Hey saved the lives of 7-8 people right there. The best emergency landing ever!
Think about this. These brave young men who saw death and freed the world came back and their kids became hippies. Imagine their struggle to understand hippies after what they'd seen in life.
Each generation changes there was nothing wrong with hippies, the second world war was about defeating an evil regime that wanted that was committing unspeakable acts of brutality and genocide. Vietnam which i assume you are alluding to was a screw up by Kennedy escalated by Johnson.
This is a late war B-17, as evidenced by the lack of camouflage paint. The deletion of paint saved over 200 pounds to the weight of the aircraft, and by the end of the war, every ounce counted for the ten year old airframe that was the B-17. Weight saving moves got so bad that at one point, oil standpipes, 20 pounds each, were deleted from the engines. This meant that the B-17 pilot could not feather their propellers, and resulted in the loss of many aircraft, until it was rectified.
@VDGG94ki It's just the matter of coincidence. First of all war and fear for life learns responsibility . If people dont experience that fear they can still live in the world of lady gaga and cheryl cole and stupid pop culture-they have no motivation to chnge it. Also all pilots (doesnt matter how old) received their training for free. Now 1hour of flying lesson by basic Cesna is about 150 pounds ( in the UK ) - flying lesson by 4-engine bomber could be little fortune- only for rich guys.
@VDGG94ki The generation, or society, of today, is insanely corrupt. Listen to the nowadays music. I listen to the old '60s and '70s. I hate rap and all that stuff.
@VDGG94ki Go see two Gregory Peck films, "12' O'Clock High" and "Captain Newman MD" Those two films are borderline documentaires on what those crews went through.
damn they must have been some of the finest pilots, and best plane... i mean you could only get these beaty birds down by removing their wings or tail... ive seen images of B-17 that had god the nose blowen off, and lost half of the tail... even one that got cut in half, the tail only hang on in the bottem, and it did only break under the landing... today, a system falier will get a plane to crush... damn fine pilots
and damn brave gunners.

It's a fact,
In April 1945 , I saw a B17 with the right wheel down in Molesworth England, just like you show.
The movie you show was a PERFECT landing just like the I witnessed.I watched the plane come in from Right to left.
Please note: The pilot kept the the wing high on the wheeless side until almost stopped!
This saved the engines and props on the right side (Engines 3 and 4). Note the ball turret was saved!
GREAT MOVIE!!
