Ayinla omowura"s fabled academic destitution was well documented, albeit ineducable--much due to rascality, thuggery and violence.Miraculously he metamorphosed himself into elevated,money-spinning brilliant recording artist whereupon he was accorded mass adulation and hero worship-deservedly.
I was introduced to Ayinla by my school mate at Lawanson ..suru-lere he lived in Mushin..his name Ganiyu..thanks for the memory Anigilaje....God Bless!!!
I swear I don't know any other NIGERIAN singer that is so vibrant and charismatic as this guy, plus he sings with deep wisdom and has a lovely voice..he's what you call CLASSY....Respect.
It'll be 30 years since he died in May. I hope we could do something just to creat awareness to his music...probably on facebook any other effective medium
Plz tell me more about him. How did he sound? I visited is grave when my dad sent me to Abeokuta quite a while ago. I think is a genius...well informed and yet uneducated!
Ayinla Omowura was the darling of all Egbas including women and a very simple man his simplicity and carelessness was partially responsible for his death. From Ago Oba Beer parlor which is between Itoku Market and Igbore junction was his favorite spot he was called to Ago Oka to challenge one of his boys for some business problems
before the guy landed empty glass jar on his head which led to his death. The whole City could not believe that Egun Mogaji could be dead. We all cried I mean the whole Yoruba race to us in Abeokuta he was the Egba solution to Haruna Ishola from Ijebu Igbo if you know the rivarly between the Egba and Ijebu you will understand . Try to read my Book coming out in August " Before the Journey Became Home"
What Solution to what rivalry??At that time there were MANY SUCCESSFUL musicans from Abeokuta, apart from Ayinla Omowura.Actually,Ayinla Omowura used to give great respect to Haruna Ishola.Dont create any division here!!!
Excuse my choice of words. Rivalry was about improvement in performance in all fields. No one questioned the highly respected Haruna Ishola but as he was aging we were looking toward Omowura to continue with Apala music. His music was directed mostly to the peasants. The death of both musicians led to the end of Apala Music in Yoruba land.
The point is,many fans of Ayinla Omowura and Haruna ishola then, were bricklayers,auto-mechanics,bus drivers and so on,and they really never cared,if Haruna Ishola Ijebuman or Ayinla Omowura an Egbaman.Educated Politicians among us created those ethnic divisions for their own selfish gains.
@akknile I dont think he meant to "creat divisions here", I quite agree with him that there was rilvalry of some sort between the Egbas and Ijebus at some point in the 70s-80s. Put it this way, both of my parents are from Ijebu Igbo and so I can say that I am from Ijebu Igbo, and when I was a youth I witnessed my extended family members holding a family meeting to discuss their disapproval of one of my Aunts from marrying an Egba man, Guess why? Because he is "Egba", i.e, Rivalry
I am Ijebu and went to school in Egba. One day we were in a Taxi cab in egba add the cabbie was playing Ayinla, so we asked him to turn the music down. He did what any egba man should do rightful, he promptly pulled over and threw us out of his cab. He had some choice words for our family linage - lol
Yes don't mess with Ayinla with egba, Young, old, poor, rich, male, female, it doesn't matter.
I met "Egun Mogaji few days before he was murdered at Ago Oba Abeokuta at his usual Beer Parlor spot . He contributed to my "RAG DAY" can. I was then a student of Ogun State Polytechnic and he was funny with me. He said "Make sure the money gets to the school". I never knew he was going to die few days after. May his soul rest in peace.
Ayinla Omowura was the channel most government programs were explained to the peasants, like National Census, Udoji Awards, Lagos Tenement Rates, and he was an advocate for University in Abeokuta and many other projects, despite his shortcomings, he was a Star for Apala music and his race
TOP 5 NIGERIA'S greatest recording artists of all time (1)Fela Kuti,Ayinla omowura,Tunde Nightingale,Sunny Ade,Victor Olaiya.
