It is a very well known effect that carbon dioxide retains heat on the Earth's surface thereby warming it. The ice ages thousands of years ago took exactly that - thousands of years - to end. Among the causes were variations in solar output, vulcanism etc. so the Earth's surface heated up gradually. We're experiencing a sudden (~200 yrs) rise in temperatures which is man made.

Large temperature fluctuations in the past both increasing and decreasing temperatures have a certain trend. However the trend that has been occuring since a human population boom in the 300-500 years caused that increase to offshoot average that was calculated for the last 3 billion years. If you have knowledge about the magnetic fields of the North and South poles then you will know that underneath the ocean bed are valleys, mountains as steep as K2 or Mt. Everest. Maybe we could genetically engineer a coral that tends to build a gradually expanding and well reinforced ring around islands and that can grow to substantial depths, or at least calcify deep water anchors. Instead of dismantling old shipping vessels they might be scuttled to protect important islands. But ultimately places like this seem doomed to be ephemeral in geologic time. They're just too intrinsically precarious to begin with.
