You make a very good point, and I agree with you, but I would like to point out that live video has the same issue, the videos there are not all user generated, there are illegal uploads.
Im not going to go into the whole "pirate" stuff & i wont justify it. but in the u.s. constitution it says that copyright must promote art & must be for a limited time. In other words suppose to be for the public good. Is the any reason why someone should still be able make off something after person makes it is dead. what on the net might be wrong. But copyright wasnt meant to last as long as it dose now and wasnt meant for corporations to live high off the hoge off other people work.
Perhaps... You could argue that stimulating the economy is in the public good.
I guess what I wonder is why should intellectual property be any different to any other kind of asset? We don't make people give up their homes if the original owner has been deceased for more than 50 years.
As a musician...I say - 'here here!' - in regards to copyright. It has just become socially acceptable to steal these days! It seems that as long as you are steeling in the privacy of your own home, then it's ok.
Oh I can respect that. I actually don't make my coffee too hot if I can help it, only because I used to make coffee at work and if it wasn't cool enough to drink right away... I'd totally forget it was there and only realise when it was obscenely cold.
When it comes to coffee I only have one rule.. MUST CONTAIN CAFFEINE. I'm such a junkie. lol
I want it known that I did last the entire 12:36. Have nothing to add in terms of a comment since we kinda covered it in email.
Nice job of laying out your argument/points. And it annoys me a little, too, that segments of old movies and TV shows are getting more traffic than folks like us are.
Ps. Since you didn't include it here, I am now having to sing "Watch John of Jordan..." on my own. The cats are not happy about this. They want the original.
Pretty soon the new JOJ site will be launched and you'll be able to download ChristopherMast's version of the "Watch JohnOfJordan" song for use on your iPod, MP3-compatible ringtone phone... whatever.
Perhaps the next time I leave it out though you should record your own version and send it to me. ;)
You remind me of a cougar I once met. Or to borrow some vernacular from an Australian television show you've likely never heard of... "A Foxy Lady." lol
Interesting points - copyright offers important protections but these days it's mostly employed to protect large corporations, not individual content creators. That said, as a musician I'd hate to live in a world with no copyright protection.
I don't know if it is mostly 'employed' by large corporations... it's just mostly enforced by large corporations, because they have great responsibilities to protect the intellectual copyright (and its income) that fuels their organisation. It helps that they usually have adequate legal channel expertise also.
It's nice to hear someone speak plainly about what is really going on here. Everyone is freaking out about someone knowing what videos they have watched, probably because they watched something they don't want people knowing about.... lol
lol. Yeah. I think most people have active sharing turned off for a reason. But the only concern is if something is illegal. And in that event surely the onerous is on YouTube to monitor and remove the content anyway?
I think people should be more unapologetic about what they like. If they watch Ysabellabrave sing, then embrace it. Celebrate it. Who cares? Life's too short. You need to do what makes you happy and tell judgment people to f@#k off.
John you and I may dissagree on this subject but I respect and love your argument. Not too many people can put it the way you have and thats why I enjoy your videos. You rock my friend.
i really loved what you were saying from 11 minutes onwards... it seemed to summarise the video particularly well. i was nodding along in agreement :)
I'm sorry if the previous comment seemed flippant. I am thankful for your support. I am grateful that on rare occasions I can make some sense while a camera is rolling. lol =)
The google search page is my home page on IE for the simple reason it is so uncluttered and "plain". I have desktop icons for all the other essentials.
12:36? I thought 10 minutes was the absolute maximum.
My criticism wasn't for what it is. I think just by turning up and using this site there is a magical community. I just don't think it's fair that some people manipulate people through the idea of it being 'community' and then dictating certain requirements. Especially since they are not themselves in a position to make those demands. I mean, YouTube could. At any moment they could say, "Watch 3 videos a day or lose your account." But users can't. lol
perhaps you misunderstood me,I wasn't criticising what you said merely saying it's different for everyone, including their perceptions..more agreeing! And yes most probably a storm in a teacup.I'm not worried about Viacom coming after me,it's simply the principal of an o/s court vetoeing our privacy laws. I totally agree with you re copyright,I was burned a couple of times with people stealing my song lyrics as a trusting youngster.
It isn't Viacom that wants all the secret details, it's actually Homeland Security who wants to dip their hands in this pool of info for their own secretive purposes, which would plunge us poor Americans deeper into this Neo-Authoritarian cycle of paranoia. (I think we both have a certain rational dislike of Homeland Security, even Dr. Lemur might agree) Never the less, good LONG video :)

i fully agree with you about the copyright
issue(and the idea that viacom is not losing
sleep over us), my problem was with youtube's
position that they had made a good-faith effort
to get rid of copyrighted material...
