@scalehex they didnt they owned it all long but they used it because the producers thought it was too scary for children so they didnt want to get complaints from it being by disney so it was a cover.

@GunsNAeroStones Disney owned Touchstone pictures and they released Nightmare under that banner because they were afraid it's seemingly dark subject matter wouldn't go over well with kids. They kind of wanted to cover their butts in case it did cause a stir. Also, Burton conceptualized the film while working as an animator for Disney (some of his earliest drawings of Jack and Zero can be seen dated as such) so technically the film would have been their property anyway
