I am a self admitted opera snob and the voices of most non classically trained singers makies me cringe, but one of the most beautiful natural voices of all times belonged to Anita Carter.
@Rabadamtimtimti...I saw Anita on an old youtube clip...I'm not sure what show it was, but it was one where all three sisters and mother Maybelle sung together, and Anita was quite a looker! A real perty lil thing indeed! But what really stood out to me, was her AMAZING VOICE! Now I'm here to tell you THAT WOMAN COULD SING!!
@Carters01 Actually...there WAS such a train, but it post-dated the song. Technically, a "cannonball" was any freight that was given priority over lesser classified freights. The Wabash Railroad-which actually went no further south than St. Louis- eventually did give one of its passenger trains the name, "Wabash Cannonball"...but as I noted, it ran between Detroit and St. Louis. It ceased operation mid- 1960's.
@Carters01 Sorry, Pal....I've seen the Wabash Cannonball on it's last run. It stopped in Lafayette, Indiana. We were on our way to church, and managed to get across the tracks before it stopped and blocked them for a half hour or so....Bad news is, when it fired up again, it blew soot all over everything, including my wife's new outfit and my white dress shirt...This was in the spring of 1981 or 1982
@danlee1950 The lyrics were penned in 1904 by William Kindt and it was a re-write of a song called Great Rock-Island Route. The song did not predict that someone would give the name to an actual train.
i live next door to Glenn in Tennessee i didn't know that. That's sad poor Mr. Glenn (that's what i call him, he hates it). Did they have a son named David?
I love all of these performers (especially Junie and John), but I like this song best with Helen, June, Rosey, and Carlene. Very wonderful performance though!!
I am just looking out for the song 'From a Boxcar Door' by Boxcar Willie. If anyone has this please upload it onto Youtube, as I would be very grateful.
Great song - love it - but the last verse is missing:
Here's to Daddy Claxton may his name forever stand - pity!

I always wondered about the lyrics: "She came down from Birmingham on the Wabash Cannonball"---but the train only ran between Detroit and St. Louis.

@BenAliGtor The Wabash Cannonball was a fictional train. The song was first recorded by the Carter Family in 1929 but not released until 1932.

@BenAliGtor
I think the song was first, and the Wabash named one of its trains after it.

one of the carter sisters married glen jones right?
1302jm 2 years ago
Helen married Glenn Jones; their oldest son, songwriter Kenneth Jones, was killed in a jeep accident in 1969.

They had four sons, Kenneth Burton (Deceased), Glenn Daniel, David Lawrence, and Keven Carter. Helen died 2 June 1998.

Yes i know david and glenn but but not kenneth or keven RIP Helen
Glenn has lots of pictures of him and Helen together surrounding a giant picture of Helen. She is really pretty.
Glenn has the most adorable dog named lucky, she is a min pin
That is sad about kenneth and helen RIP Both of them D':

From the great Atlantic ocean to the wide Pacific shore
She climbs a flowery mountains o'er the hills and by the shore
She's mighty tall and handsome she's known quite well by all
She's a regular combination on the Wabash Cannonball
REFRAIN:
Listen to the jingle, the rumble and the roar
As she glides along the woodland o'er the hills and by the shore
Hear the mighty rush of the engine hear those lonesome hoboes call
Traveling through the jungle on the Wabash Cannonball

This a great song. Performed by many, but none better than Johnny Cash and the Carters.

Love this song. I used to beg my uncle to play and I'd come in on the chorus, singing as loud as I could.
