Although I am only 26... Whats happened to the music industry? Elvis was an artist and a true performer. People like him just don't stand a chance in the charts now days. Just quick out the studio, mass produced, money fueled rubbish. It's a sad affair.
why cant anyone locate actual film footage (not just the audio) from that December 1969 performance? It's like the missing 18 miinutes of Nixon tapes. when I was a kid, my uncle gave me this on cassette tape and it forced me to laugh on seemingly unlaughable days. When I bought him an ipod, I made sure this was on it. He was amazed.
This makes me laugh every time, but I also feel some sadness... This guy was perfect entertainer and I wish I was born those days, so I could go to one of his concerts.
Bet You Didnt Know That The Reason He Was Laughing Because He Said Do You Gaze At Your Bald Head And Wish You Had Hair And In The Front Row Was A Bald Man In The Front Row And You Can Hear A Man Say HEY!
I thought that The King was laughing to His backsinger, but is it really true that someone from the audience losted his tupe and that was the reason of that memorable and legendary laughing?
@JJJFox That's the story I got from someone who was there. The guy was drunk, in the front row and his toupee was cocked on his head. When he saw the guy, he changed the words and just busted into laughter. Hilarious!! They used to play it on the radio all the time back in the early 90's in LA.
I thought the reason he was laughing was because just as he was singing this, he caught sight of a bald headed guy in the audience? This song ALWAYS makes me smile though, love it
It was during Cissy Houston's soprano obbligato--on this version of 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' --that Elvis started laughing--midnight show, Aug 26, 1969...
Elvis singing style was derived from the white italian middle-class singers who dominated radio and records until early fifties. Often he´d do impersonations of Frank Sinatra and Johnny Ray a pop sensation in the early fifties.
It sounds as if he said- someone call the doctor at 1:51 , That sounded so hilarious ha hah. R.I.P. KING Elvis, you're missed by millions of people, and subject of interest by new generations.

Suzi Quatro cleared up the long debated cause of Elvis laughter, saying after he sang about 'do you gaze at your bald head...' he then saw a man seated at the front who was very bald! This was told to her by James Burton,( lead guitarist)
@4uthefunnyfarm That's really interesting, thanks for sharing. Now everytime i listen to this imagine some bald guy in the audience watching Elvis on stage laughing about his baldness haha
Actually, the lady singing in the background is Kathy Westmoreland; and if you've ever done 'shrooms' then you get an idea of where he was at the moment he was singing this song....:)
i absolutley love this track...it just shows elvis was a human being and had a great sense of humour...puts a smile on my face everytime i hear...thanks
naja so kenn ich es ...anscheinend hatten sie an diesem abend eine neue background sängerin welche elvis total übertönt hat deshalb konnte er vor lauter lachen nicht mehr singen
It is reported that while singing the song, he saw a bald headed man in the public. So he switched the lyrics "do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair" and got lost in that big laughter. A fantastic coherence, showing that Elvis must have been a great humorous guy. This laughter is so infectious, you have to start laughing, too.
@Gynacord Actually, he saw two women in the front row trying to pull a man's wig off. He then sang the infamous line, and the man gave him a funny look.
@JimHopkinsonMusic - thanks for your adding comment, which makes the whole story even more funny. The "baldy", if still living, must be very proud of himself to become such a famous person. There is nothing I Love and miss more then the laughfter of Elvis. When he laughed especially when he and Charlie did the one version of this song up close and personal LOL you might say was one of the best. He was a kid in many ways when the guys were around and when the women were around he was always very gracious. Children were a gift from GOD. rest EL
