As a fellow Chaos player (Word Bearers), I totally agree with what you are saying about the new codex... I built my army around a theme of crazy religious fanatics... and thats damn well how i wanna field them... the cool thing about Chaos was how you could put your spin on the army to make them unique... thats the cool thing about all 40K armies... and now the Chaos codex just seems like a half-assed or a half-thought about thing, and it just seems so bland and generic now

Yes, the codex isn't perfect BUT the only broken part is the HQ section. Everything else is fine. The previous codex was waaay to powerful and this codex does a good job of stopping that.
Put simply this Codex is permissive rather than restrictive. It is simpy up to the user to make the right choices.

yeah i was very dissapointed in the lack of customization and theming involved, i mean i used to play a daemon prince with 8 attacks and strength 7 on assault, so in responce im building an abaddon led army black legion, and its going pretty good. but in the process my khorne army just got anal raped by Citadel.
yeah this new codex is hell crap i just started playin Iron Warriors and had the old (last edition) codex and i thought ep obliterators,4 heavy support choices this hell good but NO with the new codex u cant do that. and night lords cant have their extra fast attack either. games workshop would wanna perform some miracle to fix this because there are alot of pissed off chaos players and i think that a lot of pepole will cease or even stop collcting chaos all together.
The one thing I despise about the new codex is the seperation of daemons and normal chaos, which gave armies a lot of character. My local GW actually treats the daemon entries in the daemons codex as either codex:csm or daemon units, which is a nice fix.
The only other thing I hate is the removal of a lot of the fluff, particularly relating to the seperate factions. My 7-strong units of plague marines used to get free aspiring champions, which didn't change the game much but added a nice touch.
dude i know what your talking about the new idea in the way you add wargear to models you can only add so much equipment and if you take this you cant take that look on the bright side its not like the dark angels codexwhere you have either 5 or 10 models in a squad and i hope they dont fuck up the new space marine codex coming next month like that but chaos space marines got the marks of each God which is a real good advantage which in my oppinion makes them the strongest faction in the game

Its the Chaos Space Marine codex, not the Chaos codex. You can still have the theme, the new codex actually specifies theme based armies, the choices are all there for you, they just look different. You don't have to use a 'renegade' army nor do you have to include special characters, they are just there if you want to spice the game up a little with a random or a powerful element. Even with the daemons in the codex you can still use your 'little cookie cutter'. I'm not picking on you
That is why i like the daemon codex its like everything they removed from the csm codex that made it fluffy and 'colorful' was put into the daemon's codex.

it is outrageous. i confronted an unlucky games workshop man and told him exactly what i thought of it. there are units that cost me a lot to make and can no- longer use, the background has gone, there is no colour or variety, the armory is plain bullcrap and and i this is all so it can appeal more to younger generations to get more money. my club is ruined with all the yound people.this book almost made me give up on my once grand legions but now space pirates of iron warriors and world eaters.
The new chaos codex did suck. I had the Lost and the Damned army from the Eye Of Terror codex, and now the new chaos codex took away most the rules that my mutants used such as daemonic mutation. Not to mention the units that weren't rendered unusable now might as well be chaos undivided instead of nurgle. With the new rule changes, I can't use that army since mutants were my main source of units.
I've played Fantasy, I just don't like the universe as much. A game to me is more than just mechanics. I like the way the 40k world is made, more than the fantasy world.
The fact is, GW took away Chaos Space Marines' ability to be customized. When The Space Marine codex came out, it created a an army that could be completely customized to a player's play style. On the other hand, Chaos has been turned into a bland and basic piece of shit that has almost no possibilities for any real diversity. This codex is a disappointing joke.
so if you had played it a number of times, and i am a chaos player so i reacted as you did in the beginning, you would realise its much fairer. it is more all rounded and less of a full on destructive force. you can still field everything that you used too and can still remain one force like me who is fully nurgle. also demon princes are still incredibly powerful and far more fair. also a human sized demon prince is a cheat.
what exactly cant you do that you used to be able too? apart from the old rediculous amounts of upgrades that no other army got there all still there....
Its the fact there is no customization. I wouldn't even care if the Wargear was weak. And to top it off the army structuring? They punish you essentially for playing an all one mark army. The book is grosely in favor of having piles of shit that shouldn't go together.

And I've reread the codex several times. I have played Warhammer 40,000 for over 13 years. I also know what I find to be the most grosely pathetic codex I've had my hands on since Codex 3.0. And even then, I had more FUN with 3.0, because even if it was uncompetative and its rules sucked, it at least let me represent a real force.
Oh, and it didn't give me "Generic" Daemons. And mixed forces are at a disadvantage in terms of overall value.
And may I continue, on my video of course, with saying that I can be as selfish as I fucking want to be. I invest in this product because its what I WANT.
GW is no longer making a product I want in this regard. Lets remember, our friend Gav Thrope, the stupid asshole who wrote said Codex, is no longer with GW for a *reason*. And everyone knows what that reason was. Literally, Chaos has entirely disappeared from my local area. Zip. Gone. A few guys went to Daemons, but NO one plays marines.
Even the local GW's in the surrounding area, though they have a higher rate of Chaos players, have noticed a migration. GW publish a sub par book about Pirates that nobody wanted to play.
Playing an army is more than just "Rules". I wouldn't even care about weak rules, as long as I could build a force that was truly represented by rules for the faction or mark I wanted to play, not this watered down bullshit

Well, the dip in sales from Chaso Space Marines tells me that I'm not the only one.
Because everyone just LOVES seeing the only people left taking Slaanesh Daemon Princes and Khorne Berserkers in the same army, and then using Lash of Submission abusively to win. Its made Chaos SO popular. Well, actually it hasn't.
Still has abusable rules, just as much as before if you wanna dig. Only now its a real cookie cutter. Thats why sales have dipped. People like having a say in what their models have.
What they removed, MMM425, is the ability to field legions. I didn't use Iron Warriors or Khorne, because I didn't like the backround or colors, so I fielded Night Lords. Then I thought that I actually had a characterful army, with its own backround, only to have my Legion turned into pirate emos. Ngiht Lords, Word Bearers, and Alpha Legion weren't unbalanced, neither were Thousand Sons. They could have just adjusted the few legions instead of removing them all together...
okay sure, but they still kept the 4 main legions basically, you can still field a fully nurgle force for example like me. However i do understand that ppl who own iron warriors or night lords such as yourself would be quite upset. but if everyones honest im sure we would all agree iron warriors were way too overpowered. my point is, when it comes to actual gaming, the game is now fairer.

your right. I started playing chaos a few months before the new codex but i got really confused with the codex and when i had a really nasty army list they changed it to a boring piece of crap and everything in the codex is well not worth its points. I mean 275pts for Abbadon and what does he do kill himself a lord with daemon weapon can be just as effective as him eg lord with blissgiver and mark of slaa nesh i6 instant death.
The only good thing that came out of 'codex: spiky marines' was the new plastic models but its not much use to use them unles they have half-way decent rules!
Luckily, you can always use houserules. My buds and I use the new chaos codex, or bar that, the new one with the old daemons and legion special rules. I know it's not the latest edition, but it brings some of the fun back in.
I completely agree with you Lanparth, I'm a loyalist marine player, I admit how horribly butchered the chaos codex became. The chaos codex went systematically from becoming an wonderfully complex race with the possiblity of creating collorfully distinctive armies to this dumbed down subpar excuse for a fighting force. The new daemon rules were an terrible dissapointment, and a blatant method of forcing chaos players to buy into the new Daemon codex. Reminds me of what they did to blood angels...
Well, I'd say that Space Marines and Chaos Marines are too powerful, but I honestly kind of like them. In reality, I think the armies I play are just too weak...
I spent so much time on my Alpha legion cultist force... and now my army can't be fielded and i have to change everything in my army.... Alpha legion were a inflirating force.. now i can't do it without spending lots of points on chosen *sighs* Thanks for the vid :)

Amen, brother! We got so fucked by GW that I had to go out and buy $100 dollars more of stuff that I didn't want just to be able to compete with my friends now. My daemonprince used to slaughter half my buddies' armies before this codex, and now he is worthless. I play themed Night Lords and Thousand Sons, who both got fucked. Now my friend just hits my sorcerors with his vindicare and I move even slower. This codex has really made my army suck. Now I have to buy a whole new army to be any good
it sux, sux ballz, dont waste your money on it. I cant even use my alpha legion any more and my cultists. I made a friggen bitz order for 20 horrors and 10 flamers and it was a waste of money, whatever they say at gamesworkshop.

srry to comment again, but just on the point of my other comment, khorne got hosed in this codex. In fantasy there hella hard to use. In the last codex FINALLY they made khorne a great list and now there shit again. Berserkers are the worst choice in the new codex for the point cost.

I totally agree with you. The new chaos codex is a real disappointment. I lovingly made a Emperors Children army which I spent many hours modelling and converting because I liked the fluff. It pained me that after spending money and time to convert some possessed chaos marines with wings, I can not use them as you can not buy mutations anymore you just have a stupid possessed abilities table which I need to roll for before I play.
Have to agree with you, in fact, as soon as i fell like getting a video camera, i'll probably post my own response in video format. Your main point, no thematic armies, is bollocks, and what's even worse, is that for me, my army has been made USELESS. had a bloodthirster. now obsolete. Had a fricken awesome terminator khorne lord. now less powerful (had around 10 or so attacks, now 4+2d6 or KILL MYSELF) fucking christ. I hope they allow use of old armory weapons.

It's just GW attempting to make more money by having people buy 2 books to make one army. It's all about making those dollars now. White dwarf is a prime example. Look at one from the early to mid 90's and then look at one from this year. You will see less hobby content and more advertising in the newer issues.

Secondly, I stand by my criticisms, and if you actually bother to listen to my second video, you'd know my army got BETTER with the new codex. Its not just about power, its about people being able to invest in their models.
Nice review, especially the comment that the codex is half-finished. It can even be seen in the artwork - much is reused, and the rest is poor pencil sketches. I completely agree with your views on special characters. The Daemon Prince (except the Khorne one) is not actually bad, but it is horribly bland - there is nothing at all to show it was once a chaos champion. One thing you should add is that the new codex has really bad pricings, and is full of no-brainers.
The Codex just seems really half assed. Apocalypse hasn't helped much either mind you. Given that Chaos got two faction specific units, and a bunch of shitty Daemons.

I've played Fantasy, I just don't like the universe as much. A game to me is more than just mechanics. I like the way the 40k world is made, more than the fantasy world.

The fact is, GW took away Chaos Space Marines' ability to be customized. When The Space Marine codex came out, it created a an army that could be completely customized to a player's play style. On the other hand, Chaos has been turned into a bland and basic piece of shit that has almost no possibilities for any real diversity. This codex is a disappointing joke.

so if you had played it a number of times, and i am a chaos player so i reacted as you did in the beginning, you would realise its much fairer. it is more all rounded and less of a full on destructive force. you can still field everything that you used too and can still remain one force like me who is fully nurgle. also demon princes are still incredibly powerful and far more fair. also a human sized demon prince is a cheat.

Its the fact there is no customization. I wouldn't even care if the Wargear was weak. And to top it off the army structuring? They punish you essentially for playing an all one mark army. The book is grosely in favor of having piles of shit that shouldn't go together.
Its blasphemous. And I'm glad Gav Thrope got his ass FIRED as a probably result.

And I've reread the codex several times. I have played Warhammer 40,000 for over 13 years. I also know what I find to be the most grosely pathetic codex I've had my hands on since Codex 3.0. And even then, I had more FUN with 3.0, because even if it was uncompetative and its rules sucked, it at least let me represent a real force.
Oh, and it didn't give me "Generic" Daemons. And mixed forces are at a disadvantage in terms of overall value.

GW is no longer making a product I want in this regard. Lets remember, our friend Gav Thrope, the stupid asshole who wrote said Codex, is no longer with GW for a *reason*. And everyone knows what that reason was. Literally, Chaos has entirely disappeared from my local area. Zip. Gone. A few guys went to Daemons, but NO one plays marines.

Even the local GW's in the surrounding area, though they have a higher rate of Chaos players, have noticed a migration. GW publish a sub par book about Pirates that nobody wanted to play.
Playing an army is more than just "Rules". I wouldn't even care about weak rules, as long as I could build a force that was truly represented by rules for the faction or mark I wanted to play, not this watered down bullshit
So don't preach to me. I've cast my lot in with the Boyz now. At least orks are fun.

Well, the dip in sales from Chaso Space Marines tells me that I'm not the only one.
Because everyone just LOVES seeing the only people left taking Slaanesh Daemon Princes and Khorne Berserkers in the same army, and then using Lash of Submission abusively to win. Its made Chaos SO popular. Well, actually it hasn't.
Still has abusable rules, just as much as before if you wanna dig. Only now its a real cookie cutter. Thats why sales have dipped. People like having a say in what their models have.

What they removed, MMM425, is the ability to field legions. I didn't use Iron Warriors or Khorne, because I didn't like the backround or colors, so I fielded Night Lords. Then I thought that I actually had a characterful army, with its own backround, only to have my Legion turned into pirate emos. Ngiht Lords, Word Bearers, and Alpha Legion weren't unbalanced, neither were Thousand Sons. They could have just adjusted the few legions instead of removing them all together...

However i do understand that ppl who own iron warriors or night lords such as yourself would be quite upset. but if everyones honest im sure we would all agree iron warriors were way too overpowered. my point is, when it comes to actual gaming, the game is now fairer.

your right. I started playing chaos a few months before the new codex but i got really confused with the codex and when i had a really nasty army list they changed it to a boring piece of crap and everything in the codex is well not worth its points. I mean 275pts for Abbadon and what does he do kill himself a lord with daemon weapon can be just as effective as him eg lord with blissgiver and mark of slaa nesh i6 instant death.

Luckily, you can always use houserules. My buds and I use the new chaos codex, or bar that, the new one with the old daemons and legion special rules. I know it's not the latest edition, but it brings some of the fun back in.

I completely agree with you Lanparth, I'm a loyalist marine player, I admit how horribly butchered the chaos codex became. The chaos codex went systematically from becoming an wonderfully complex race with the possiblity of creating collorfully distinctive armies to this dumbed down subpar excuse for a fighting force. The new daemon rules were an terrible dissapointment, and a blatant method of forcing chaos players to buy into the new Daemon codex. Reminds me of what they did to blood angels...

I spent so much time on my Alpha legion cultist force... and now my army can't be fielded and i have to change everything in my army.... Alpha legion were a inflirating force.. now i can't do it without spending lots of points on chosen *sighs* Thanks for the vid :)

The Daemon Codex, cannot be combined with the Chaos Codex. Basically meaning you get either a Marine Army, or a Daemon Army. No in between.

Amen, brother! We got so fucked by GW that I had to go out and buy $100 dollars more of stuff that I didn't want just to be able to compete with my friends now. My daemonprince used to slaughter half my buddies' armies before this codex, and now he is worthless. I play themed Night Lords and Thousand Sons, who both got fucked. Now my friend just hits my sorcerors with his vindicare and I move even slower. This codex has really made my army suck. Now I have to buy a whole new army to be any good

that is soooooo fucken true man! i am so mad! i used a completly nurgle force, one of my main components to my army being my demon prince. i dont use a landraider, i dont use a preditor, i use my demon prince and troops, that was my deal. my whole battle plan is now fucked!

If the trend continues.... the games will be oversimplified. The Chaos Codex is terrible. I agree. I play primarily imperial guard and space wolves. if they do to my armies what they did to yours... I jsut don't know what I'll do!!

srry to comment again, but just on the point of my other comment, khorne got hosed in this codex. In fantasy there hella hard to use. In the last codex FINALLY they made khorne a great list and now there shit again. Berserkers are the worst choice in the new codex for the point cost.

ddue your spot on. they took out all of the "flavour" in the chaos codex. Im kinda like u in theme armies. I mean since when the hell do berserkers and noise mairnes fight side by side when the armies lead by a khornate. And noew u can only have like regular plague marines and berserkers. No more Terminator bersekrers which ACTUALLY represented berserkers in termie armour. God they fucked this book up. Hope they dont do this to orks to, but they probably will.

I totally agree with you. The new chaos codex is a real disappointment. I lovingly made a Emperors Children army which I spent many hours modelling and converting because I liked the fluff. It pained me that after spending money and time to convert some possessed chaos marines with wings, I can not use them as you can not buy mutations anymore you just have a stupid possessed abilities table which I need to roll for before I play.

Have to agree with you, in fact, as soon as i fell like getting a video camera, i'll probably post my own response in video format. Your main point, no thematic armies, is bollocks, and what's even worse, is that for me, my army has been made USELESS. had a bloodthirster. now obsolete. Had a fricken awesome terminator khorne lord. now less powerful (had around 10 or so attacks, now 4+2d6 or KILL MYSELF) fucking christ. I hope they allow use of old armory weapons.

I totally agree with you, i play deathguard and i feel that they have cutt my rotting wings. Sure i can use my characters and sutch but i don'r want to be able to use heavy weapons and other crap, i want my theme back!

It's just GW attempting to make more money by having people buy 2 books to make one army. It's all about making those dollars now. White dwarf is a prime example. Look at one from the early to mid 90's and then look at one from this year. You will see less hobby content and more advertising in the newer issues.

Nice review, especially the comment that the codex is half-finished. It can even be seen in the artwork - much is reused, and the rest is poor pencil sketches. I completely agree with your views on special characters. The Daemon Prince (except the Khorne one) is not actually bad, but it is horribly bland - there is nothing at all to show it was once a chaos champion. One thing you should add is that the new codex has really bad pricings, and is full of no-brainers.
