I've always liked Bruce's playing but must agree with some comments on this take - it is a bit stiff. Love the version on his 50th Anniversary CD - a little more dynamic.
I dont see anythng wrong with this performance - is it that people think that because he's not soloing at massive speeds there must me something wrong? His playing is brilliant in this.
stefan , give this vid a chance.I love Jack & i love the blues BUT i was ALSO dissappointed watchin' this ******TILL 5.30*******Jack suddenly becomes JACK again - he just gets a bloody injection of hell knows what , from hell knows where ....WOAH...you GO boy -Kewl !! Gawd can he PLAY BASS and SING or what .....
and his butt's still cute at 40 (ooohhh i AM naughty!!)
I suspect JB is one of those people, like Edage A Poe, who simply cannot handle their alchohol. You can see it on his face and his eventual bloated appearance. Poor fragile guy. I adore him though for his wildness and his earlier performances on Youtube "Smiles and Grins" - I wish he remained so together and focused.
ur probably right.....he kinda"lost it" @end of 70's.the person who'll be MOST disappointed is Jack(he strives for musical perfection)...he went thru an (almost fatal)liver transplant a cuppla yrs ago-such a shame....I'd love 2 meet him(not only a superb musician, but seems like a nice guy TOO)am glad he's still around - he still plays and sings so well
From this video and others from his later years he appears a bit off, possibly drunk. I understand about not being obsessively meticulous with this type of music but there is a noticable difference between Buddy guy, who in his looseness really seems in control as opposed to Bruce who appears chaotic. Please, don't get me wrong - Bruce's singing in Cream's "we're going wrong" is my all-time YouTube favorite. He had SO much potential.
And to continue...I would say that his treatment of tunes by those he loves, i.e., Buddy Guy, etc., reveals a reverence much more so than the endless faceless crowds of cookie-cutter re-enactment attempts and xerox copycat lick regurgitators that fab up the ersatz but miss the mark of essence and soul be a million miles.
I don't see the sloppiness. And his singing is great. He sings like Jack Bruce. He's never been obsessively meticulous and has no obsession with "polish" or being "tight" in the small minded sense of the musical bean counters who would miss the forest for the trees. Bruce plums for the transcendent and achieves it far more than, I would say, most.
I normally like Jack Bruce's voice and his bass playing is excellent. But, like many of his later performances he often appears high and a bit sloppy. Unlike many more fortunate musicians I bet drugs hurt his creativity more than it helped. Some guys (like Ginger B.) can be zonked out and never miss a beat.
So I recorded myself singing while taking a piss and not taking a piss and...well...it seemed to me that I had much greater range while taking the piss, espeically the high notes. And sorry about using a 5 syllable word - I should have realized that you weren't going to be up for it, pal.
No, it was your assertion that it was "horrible" and that "every time old Jack opens his mouth he genuinely sounds like he's taking the piss" that has most of us thinking you ought to lay off the LSD.
Thought my assertion that Bruce was a legend and that you couldn't fault the musicianship might shield me from outraged yank Jack-lovers but clearly i was wrong.
I never said said he wasn't entitled to his own take on it pal I just said his vocals are shit particularly when seen in the light of Buddy Guy's version. As for being "uncharitable" what the fuck are you a schoolteacher?
As for the comment from crusty no. 2(47) I'm not even gonna bother.
Can't say I agree with that uncharitable comment. I'm a big fan of Buddy Guy and his version is definitive. But everyone is entitled to their own take on it. Jack Bruce will never imitate anyone else - he'll always perform in his own style. And Jack, David Sancious, and (the late (Bruce Gary) are a really formidable trio. IN other words, I liked it.
David Sancious is a bad ass mf!! Check out his solo stuff and with his band, Tone!

Exceptional video picture quality, Janey. I agree this is one MOFO golden nugget.
Jack looks so damn healthy and vibrant.
The understatement and space is fascinating.
Sounds delicious with headphones.
The players give a s**T-like how the *&%# can you tell! A grand favorite cover.

I still miss the dreamy and controlled passion of "we're going wrong". Maybe he needed Clapton's/Bakers restraining influences.
