It's possible to play it like a normal bass/guitar if needed, but it's using one instrument with it's strengths to act like some other instrument. For example, you *could* take a ukulele and with correct sound processing, get a "death metal" sounds, but it's way simpler to simply play a guitar. But, yes, there are people who do play the instrument as a bass or as a guitar, when that's useful to do. :)
You *can* play an open string, but in touchstyle play it's a "trick move" rather than normal operation.
Tapping player Robert Turley and some other guitarists have developed technique using no deadener, because with practice you can deaden the strings as you play with your fingers.
But the strength of the instrument is to leave the open strings alone, and use a deadener. That's the fastest way to creating the most music. And then, if you wish, back up and try picking, non-deadener play, etc.
We have Megatars in a wide range of pricing, and you'll notice them (in my humble opinion) delivering a Iot stronger tone than competitors costing way more. Search Mobius Megatar on Google and check out the Pricelist section.
We also make the ZenTapper, a radical departure in instrument construction, brilliant sound, and amazing low pricing. Search ZenTapper on YouTube as we get more videos up, or search ZenTapper on Google.
@MobiusMegatar Absolutely LOVE your name, it's awesome and unique! So the Megatars start at 1600$ and the ZenTapper at just below 1000$. Thought I could post the prices since I reckon a lot of people are going to be interested. :)
I studied sales, many years ago. And I discovered that there are many ways you can increase the odds of making a sale. But of these various methods, the straight and simple methods seem to work the best in the long run ...
You just try to talk about what's important, and talk to the person who might want to have this kind of thing. And if you communicate clearly, and show what's possible, then the dreams of the person and the virtues of the thing match up.
I have always been captivated by this instrument. I would like to see an very expressive player instead of the video game scores that sound repetitious.
@rb7magnetico Check out Kyle James McCann he plays a couple parts in a rock band with touchstyle instead of the one big arpeggio sound that you usually hear on touchstyle.
Maybe. It's designed for function, and those who play it report it sounds great, feels great, balances well, playing sounds more 'in tune' than standard guitars and basses ... and ... its affordable. Maybe it's prettier than it looks. ;)
The Megatar standard is like a 6 string bass plus a long scale guitar (without the major second interval between string 4 and 5. Its all straight 4ths).
Go to the Mobius Megatar website (search on Google) and go to the Library and there you can download the Owner's Guide, which spells out the most popular tunings.
However, our recommended tuning (for fastest learning and clarity) is called BassBottom. The bass strings are exactly like a six-string bass, and the melody strings are like a guitar at fret three, with three additional lower frets available.
Usually on the melody side, however, we tune in straight fourths, which makes scales easy!
Well, some players, who use distortion, might argue the point with you. I cannot post a link here in this reply but do a search for 'Mobius Megatar,' go to our website, and click the link that says 'songs,' and listen to Ryan Smith, Dino Haak, and Jorge Pescara.
I have a problem with distortion. Each time I try to move to a different string, it accidentally "plucks" the string and gives me an unneccessary open note.
Try using a 'string deadener'. Weave some soft material under and over the strings between the nut and fret one, so that strings go dead fast when your fingers release them. That, and working on your finger technique can usually handle this situation.
Is that jazz standard autumn leaves at 5.00? Theres another video of touch stule guitar of that song on youtube somewhere, by an amazing guitarist called Stanley Jordan. Look up his letterman performance
Actually it's Fly Me to the Moon, though there are some similarities between the two songs. I like Fly Me as a demo because it has unusually regular progression through the Circle of Fifths.
I have met Stanley, and seen him in performance -- and did you see his performance in the Bruce Willis film called 'Blind Date'? -- and Stanley Jordan is absolutely fabulous. My favorite song of his is 'Bolero.'
@ibanezbloke It is a ii V I IV which is the first four bars of chords in autumn leaves, but that chord prog is found in a lot of songs. Especially jaz.
Yes, I like Autumn Leaves, and especially Fly Me to the Moon, because it is one of the "purest" diatonic chord changes found in standards.
I don't know if it's really true, but it seems to me that all the standards which attain popularity have at least *one* little non-standard chord tweak, which is (I think) what makes them popular. But Fly Me is darn close to very standard.
As I recall, this is a VI, II, V, I progression -- "popcorn" or "bubblegum" changes -- pretty good for learning.
You know, I don't actually personally know anyone in Metallica. If I meet some of them, I'll ask.

I want to see this baby lash out some metal. How about handing one to a band like Metallica and keeping a camera around for the fun?

or is the string deadener always there?

Great instrument. Does the "Storm" modes have a stereo output as well ?
Thanks
pianist007 1 year ago
All Mobius Megatar (and ZenTapper) models have stereo output.
This enables you to effect the two sides differently, which is commonly what players do. You can always stick the two sides together, of course.

Woah! The action on that particular instrument must be pretty low if you can pull stuff like that!
To be honest, distortion wouldn't fit an instrument like that, maybe light overdrive, but not under any circumstance distortion.
