Hi Simon, Not to criticize and happy you like the song.I pray you will find the peace through Jesus Christ that only he can give. We all have problems but we can do all things through him that strengthen us. Praise the Lord.
My little Brother and myself are very big and true John Cash Fan's this is the MAN we would listen to all the time together and then we lost JOHN R.CASH R.I.P. MR.CASH . Now I have lost my Little Brother to suicide and the last time we talked he said it was almost time to go be with Jonh and june to sing with John and some day I will join them at the throne wish we could of went to see Johnny Cash together before they both was gone but i guess i'll never get to meet the cash family .
I`m atheist but I can really enjoy his music. I dont care hiss religion, I can see his so deep and beatiful soul. So stop talking bout religion, look at his soul. I`m really sure, that Johnny wouldn`t talk about religion in this way. God bless atheism.
@SimonNenagh You may be more of a 'believer' in the true sense of the word than you realize. Just because the zealots have hijacked faith doesn't mean that they have the corner or monopoly on the truth. In fact, they may even have be lesser of believers than you!
@SimonNenagh The thing about it, this is an old Gospel song. It's like an atheist listening to hymns. It's contradictory. So is your statement about God blessing atheism. It makes zero sense.
@kevin3350 They are allowed to do what ever they want. It just seems a little silly. I'm a Christian. I wouldn't go around singing songs about there being no God. It just seems contradictory.
@missdixie7 I'm a Christian too, but I enjoy Zen, Hindu, and Taoist art, regardless of the fact that I do not share the beliefs of the people that created it. I can almost guarantee that you like some form of artistic expression by someone of another faith (:
@kevin3350 I was talking to the person who is Atheist listening to hymns. If you are a Christian, you are not Atheist. I'm not sure you are the one my first comment was replying to. I may like music made by somebody who believes differently. However, I certainly don't sit around listening to songs about their beliefs. That would just be like self torture.
@missdixie7 I understand that you were talking to an Atheist, but it should not be torture for you to listen to music about someone else's beliefs. As the famous Victorian scholar Max Muller said, to know only one religion is to know none. This person see's the goodness in Johnny Cash's soul regardless of their belief, they should not be called "silly" for that.
@kevin3350 I've studied other religions. It's one thing to study it and another to listen to somebody sing about it. Maybe silly was the wrong word...just shocking or unexpected.
@MeatIsbetter Hah. Being an atheist and liking Johnny Cash is the same as being a Nazi and liking Hasidic music. Johnny Cash's Christian faith permeated all his work.
@AuH2O Sooo...? Religion has nothing to do with liking music or not. Johnny Cash was a Christian - I'm an Atheist. I enjoy his music all the same, even the parts that preach about his faith. Hell, my own two favorite songs by Cash are probably When The Man Comes Around and Sunday Morning Coming Down.
@AuH2O "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." - Gandhi. Judging someone on their religion (or lack thereof) isn't a very christian to do. and comparing atheists to nazi's? lowest of the low. can't we just appreciate johnny cash's music for what it is: beautiful?
@DeathCabForCutie182 Some guy Ghandi, huh. He wrote to Hitler and agreed with his anti-Semitism. I like your Hindus but, as a Christian, I don't think much of Ghandi.
@Fingalful gandhi fought for peace in his country without taking a single life. and as for your "hindu" comment, unlike you, i don't see people based on their religion. also, addressing the antisemitism, the new testament is full of antisemitism. i respect all religion, but its ignorant people who see atheists as horrible people and talk about them "all going to hell" and such that really makes me not respect mankind as a whole. if there really is a god, i'd like to think that he loves everyone.
Another #1 hit on the Country & Western charts for The Man in Black. It was the 155th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It also hit #1 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks charts. It was also the first #1 C&W hit of 1969. And the world of Country Music was fixing to shoot into the stratosphere.

Ah this is great stuff!!! The only singer I'd rather listen to is the great Dubliner Luke Kelly, especially as a young man. If you like JC give him a try, same kind of musician, honest, with an incredible natural voice :)
@tony10396861 both great musicians, but same kind of musician? really? not trying to start an argument btw, after a friendly conversation on the matter, massive fan of both the Dubliners and JR
@afro10k I think there's a lot of similarities. American country/ folk music was heavily influenced by Irish music, they have a lot in common. They're two of the greatest folk singers from both genres, both with an outrageous amount of natural talent, and both started singing folk songs by accident.
My real aim is to get more americans listening to the Dubs, they seem to prefer the more happy-clappy stuff put out there by the Clancys or god forbid, the High Kings. JC fans are my best chance i t
@tony10396861 I understand you now. Luke Kelly got into folk music by accident?
The reason I asked about the similarities by the way is because how incredibly unique both men are. I've seen the Dubliners live since Lukes passing (unfortunately I wasn't alive before that to see them) and they're different now, they recognised it and instead of trying to replace him they changed the sound of the songs (Auld Triangle for example). Good luck with your mission dude.
@afro10k Yeah he wasn't from a folk tradition or anything like that, it was only when he went to England to get work that he fell in with English folkies and started singing folk songs himself. Apparently what converted him to folk music was coming across a group randomers in Newcastle singing the Auld Triangle. He followed them to a folk club and didn't look back
@tony10396861 We gave you Sting, PJ and Duncan, The Animals, we brought Hendrix into the country and apparently we like the fuse to Luke Kelly's musical career, world you are welcome.
I used to hate my old Arkansas stepdad, but he could play and sing this song, and now I MISS him--isn't the passage of time something else? Hey, he did the best he knew how to do...I was a weird kid. ;])
Just to let you know johnny your mom singing tenor is extremly abnormal common you know more about music you should not have made such a silly mistake.
@apiarygirl With that definition, it makes more sense, but I've only ever heard tenor in the context of a man's vocal range, kind of higher, but still low for a woman.
@DoomedSonOftheWalrus Soprano is a lot higher than tenor, so would be a big stretch.
@maxepane a tenor is about the vocal range. you can have a low octave like pavarotti and still be called a tenor, or you can have a high octave. a woman can certainly be a tenor and there are plenty of tenor women. just as a man can be a soprano. a bass has a low range and cannot go that high. i'd say johnny cash is about as base as you can get.
I don't understand people who condescendingly say that this man's soul made up for his lack of singing ability, or even worse that he was "tone deaf". What a load of shite!! Cash was born to sing, one of the greatest singers I've ever heard. Sure, Sinatra, Pavarotti etc. were great to be honest I'd prefer to listen to this any day. The late Luke Kelly is probably the only singer I'd rather listen to than Johnny Cash
