they charge so much money for vintage books because they are OLD!!! if you were to buy a pot made 300 years ago, its going to be a hell of alot more expensive than going to walmart and buying one. the reason those books have cheap cover prices is beacause back then, .50 cents was alot of money.

1. Correct that some books are in terrible shape. But most are in decent to good condition.

2. Pricing. Everything is 1/2 price except for rare books. They clearly state that in their stores. What do you expect for a vintage book. You are splitting hairs.

3. Do you really expect them to give you $100 for FFVI when they cannot even sell it for that price? Get real. If you want that much, put it on ebay yourself.

Also, the fact that nostalgia items and collectibles are priced based on market price and therefore, at times, well above half of the item's original price is clearly listed on signage near the registers and buy counter. You do know how to read, I assume, if you are visiting a book store?

Why don't we discuss the pricing of non-collectible/ non-nostalgia items? You never once mention standard items that are still in print. The prices for items that have been published during the current year is exactly at HALF of the publisher's price and for older items that are not collectible they are priced WELL BELOW half. If you're going to present a "factual" account, please present all sides.

*headdesk* Yes, we DO get moldy books. Guess what we do with them? Throw them away. They're not only dangerous, but they stink to high heaven!

And books without jackets can still be sold since people WILL buy them- especially since we put them out for 1-2 bucks! *yay clearance!*

Also, in all of our BUY areas where we buy books back from the customers, it LISTS what type of books that are not for half, which is most of the Nostalgia type (first editions from the 1940s, so on and so forth).

With items still in print, the most HPB charges is half of a publisher's listed price (and I've never seen a Harry Potter book listed between $40 and $60). I've seen rare, out-of-print (hence, collectible) books there as well.

I mean, seriously, do you really think that a first print paperback edition of 1984 should only be sold for a quarter? The market value is over $100, and it makes sense for a store that deals in collectible items to price them based on the value that collectors give them.

C: i don't know WHAT "vintage book you are referring to- (King Arthur in dramatic inverted color?) but HPB uses many references to look up values for collectible and older books that have gained value over the years. they fall in to the category of pricing exeptions as referred to earlier- because they have higher COLLECTIBLE value.

B: $ 19.99- $29.99 for a harry potter book? no. all harry potter books are HALF of the PUBLISHER"S PRICE if not LOWER due to condition issues. the most expensive being $17.48. IF the book was signed or a special edition it would be in the nostalgia /collectibles section and could be more, but there is a SIGN stating that in the section - the PRICING EXCEPTIONS SIGN! note: in the video, you pictured two non-potter books during that segment with no discernable price tags.

These videos are such loads of crap. Have you actually ever SHOPPED at a Half Price Books? Have you ever read the signs posted all over the store? They sell their books at half the current publishers or list price. Sure, I've seen little mistakes here and there, but the employees are human and if pointed out the mistakes are corrected on the spot because they have great customer service! I'll always shop there! Have you seen their clearance section? Its amazing.

I should post a video about the great books I got for $2.98. Who cares what eBay lists the games for, they price at half the publisher's price or less (it says so on the web site.) Without HPB, I couldn't afford to buy books. Plus, they care for the environment and donate millions of books to the needy. Why are you trying so hard to tear down such a great company?
