The highland midge in Scotland is the most annoying irratating thing ever, I was camping for the weekend at Loch Lomond and we couldnt get rid of them even with insect repellant on they still half eat us and not im sitting here all itchy with blisters everywhere
@MrArcticFox have you found a u shaped pattern for a midge? I have scoured the net with no results, not sure what I would tie. Any ideas would be appreciated.
The Scottish Midge will bite. Only the females do this, and for those who attract them (I do), it can be painful and bloody due to the sheer number of bites you can get if unprotected.
Couldn't agree more -- fantastic video. The best of its type that I've seen. Made a number of things clear to me that I had not previously understood. Superb photography and narration.
Considering the technical challenge and required patience necessary to make this happen, this is an excellent video to see midge emergence in real time.

Midges are NOT mosquitoes; however many midges DO bite. No-see-ums, sand flies, white socks, etc are all biting midges.

Mosquitoes are in the "Midge" family. There are many types of midges. Great video.

Not that I've seen. They swarm bad around Cleveland, but I haven't been bitten. I think some species bite tho. Wikipedia has a good article on them.
