Nice tribute, but the patch is for the USS Bunker Hill CG 52, a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser launched in 1985. The carrier was CV17. Strange music for the video, but hey, you took the time to make and post this tribute, so thanks. My great uncle served aboard the Bunker Hill in WWII.
My father in law was on the flight deck during the battle. He is gone now. He left us dozens of pictures from the Bunkerhill. Though my wife says he never spoke of his time in the service. From the collection of photos he was surely proud of it. Thanks for posting.
In 1971, I was in Radioman "A" school and saw the USS Bunker Hill anchored in the harbor. I heard the Navy was going to scrap her so I wrote to the Navy Department about finding a way to save her as a floating school or museum. The Navy said it was too late and I was really sad about it., especially after the debacle with the great USS Enterprise going to the scrap yard. I'm glad the her other sister ships, like my dad's USS Hornet, were saved for future generations.
My grandfather, Aviation Machinist Mate First Class Edwin Orville Wilty (Jeb) served on this ship and died on this ship May 11, 1945. I don't mean to pick apart your video but I think you could have found a more fitting song, and the patch you show is not the patch of the USS Bunker Hill CV 17, the ship that lost so many men. I applaud your effort but maybe a little more research is in order before posting.
My Uncle Harold Krumwiede, was also on this ship. he was waiting in line to go in and give a report, but he wanted to go get a cigarette, so he left the line, and the buiding that he was supposed to go into, to give his report was hit by a kamakazze the ironic part is that his cigs were luck strike
My dad served as "Fireman 3rd Class" (Fireman actually were the radar operators) from the time the ship was launched in 1942 until it was hit by kamikaze in 1945. He spent 3 years in the South Pacific (arguably one of the most dangerous places on earth) before he was 21. He still lives today in a VA facility in PA.
I participated in a reath laying at the sight of USS Bunker Hill(CV 17) while serving onboard USS Bunker Hill(CG 52) back in 1995, it was a very moving experience. - MS2 Ackerman
My Father served aboard the Bunker Hill 1943-45. Gunners Mate 1st Class, 1st Division, Keepers of the Fore Castle. As far as your video I don't find it much of a tribute. Your missing a lot of info on the campaigns the Bunker Hill participated in. That patch is from the guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill CG-52. But what really killed it for me was the music. It's fitting of a Tijuana cantina, not my Fathers ship he proudly served on and lost almost 400 of his fellow shipmates.
my Father was stationed onboard the cv-17 but somthig happened and he was left behind on its fatal trip to the pacific.Had he been onboard when the plane crashed into the hanger I would not be here writing this. My Dad was a laundryman.
Thanks for the tribute, it's wonderful to see this online! The photo of the crew you have is actually just a photo of the pilots, though. My grandfather was a pilot stationed on the ship in WWII - he's top left in your photo! :-)
