When I think about who was the most COMPLETE boxer of all time, in the sense of being able to switch defence and attack, having genuine knockout power in both fists, being able to fight off both the front and back foot, having the ability to work behind the jab, owning a great chin and applying subtle pressure without getting wreckles, four men come to mind; Ray Robinson, Eder Jofre, Ezzard Charles and this man, Alexis Arguello. What a magnificent boxer, a true artist.
@iljn1988 Joe Louis belongs on that list. Stylistically Arguello and Louis are very similar, both boxer-punchers with flawless fundamentals (hands up, chin down), applying sublte pressure while taking apart various styles and ko power in either hand. See my video on the subtle skills of Joe Louis.
@coxscorner Well said. I agree, stylistically both men were very similar indeed. Job well done on the Joe Louis video you put together. Keep 'em coming. Cheers.
@iljn1988 i agree with your comments tho i admit i underappreciated him, esp.when i saw arron pryor dismantle him.pryor simply swarmed over him it seems

Kevin Rooney's from my home town, Staten island, NY. He doesn't do too well here, but I give him credit for getting far enough in his career to merit a match with a fighter of the stature of Alexis Arguello. Staten Island isn't exactly a fertile ground for boxing legends. Wonder what it feels like to get hit with a shot like that. Only boxers and hockey players know from personal experience.
@RRaquello I agree, except from the hockey player perspective. Hockey players do indeed beat the hell out of each. Much respect but a pro boxer is at a totally different skill level.
That's Kevin Rooney that just got dropped, he would later go on to be Mike Tyson's trainer long before Don King got his hooks in Tyson and the rest is history:)
@UndeadFool I read an article on Duran in Ring Magazine back in the mid 80's. It was a mini bio before the Duran/Hagler fight. They interviewed Arguello, and even though Duran had a dislike for Arguello (Back then, Duran hated everyone that was anywhere near his weight) Arguello was really rooting for Duran. There was brief talk of them meeting but nothing ever materialized. Heck of a fight if they could have worked it out. Arguello/Sanchez would have been a brutal chess match for the ages!
Does anyone else think that a fight between Alexis Arguello and Juan Manuel Marquez would have been awesome? 2 very smart, calculating textbook fighters with great offense. It would have been an explosive chess match in the ring. Both fighters trade knockdowns, and a constant flow of ATG combinations make this an example of the sweet science at it's very very best.
@UndeadFool Great matchup indeed. And I agree with you on the outcome with a pretty decent chance of Arguello winning by late round stoppage. I think the fact that Marquez has been dropped before and the fact that Arguello was a superior finisher once he hurt an opponent, leaves the possibility. Thanks for your post!
@jperez9805 I think Marquez's resilience and warrior spirit would help him avoid getting TKOd by Arguello. Both would know how to make adjustments but Arguello would be the one to put more hurt on Marquez because of his height and reach advantage.
I can also imagine a fight between Arguello and Pacquiao. That would have been a similar battle like that of Pryor vs Arguello. Pac was no Pryor (who was a different animal), I'm not sure if Pac would have taken that right hook the way Pryor took it
@urbandarito Highly, highly doubtful. Neither of these guys were ever in a dull fight. Their styles & hearts proved just that. Arguello was at a totally different level, especially when you compare to todays boxers. He would have cleaned house between 126-140.
@3232rams, absolutely mate, couldn't agree more. You know?, I think we can all agree that surprise losses happen to the best but very rare...Alexis no doubt was surprised a couple of times by good fighters, nonetheless he was not only a great fighter which he proved in the ring but also a gentleman without comparison. A legitimate great in his time and an all time legend, a great pride for Nicaragua and all Latin America.
@frankieleones Thanks for your post. Very well said. Alexis was my childhood hero and I had the honor of meeting him back many years ago after the 2nd Pryor fight. He was in my hometown of Corpus Christ, Texas attending a boxing card. The guy reinforced my respect and admiration that I had for him. They sure don't make them like Alexis Arguello anymore.
@Trashfished The beautiful thing about this video is the fact that I have the power to remove comments left by garbage who never knew what it was like to lace up a pair of gloves. Until the day that Alexis died, he and Pryor remained close friends. Good luck with your insecurity and your "woulda-coulda-shoulda" life. The rest of us have enough class and respect to make up for the lack in your life. Best of luck, buddy.
I think,,,Arguello is or was,,the greatest fighter who ever stepped in the ring. His actions out of the ring prove he was a good person too. One of the best or atleast one of the greatest champions who ever lived! He is the best to me anyway,, If Arron Pryor was not coked up,,,He would have went down,,he did go down,,way down after the fight. His trainer is barred from boxing to this day,,,,,,
im nicaraguan and all i got to say is that im glad he is one of the best boxers of all time.....he would have easily beaten salvador sanchez if they wouldve fought...R.I.P to both
@meynard1 Unfortunately, we'll never know. The controversy surrounding Pryor, Panama Lewis and the "secret bottle" always seems to follow him. To add to the legitimacy of that concern was Panama Lewis directly involved in the Luis Resto/ Billy Collins shameful stunt. He'll never be able to live that one down.
@jezelljr If you haven't already seen it, try to find the HBO documentary "Assault In The Ring". It's all about the Resto/Panama Lewis scandal. Very insightful and heartbreaking. Cheers.
@Magnum49r Yeah man Arguello for me have the most efective right hand in boxing, i remember that powerfull right hand against Ray Mancini. Mancini's body turned around with the impact and walk like a baby to the ropes. Like you said this one was fucking perfect.
was pretty much a textbook 1-2 by a fighter with great handspeed, balance, and form. hard to stop a punch when it's coming a 10th of a second after another.
@antoniocherry whaaaaat, where u comin from?pros get hit my fast straight,on the button right hands every minute of every day chief.u make it sound like he fucked up by getting hit,yer wrong.this is a gettin hit business!no pro ever got so good hes immune from any punch what sooooo EVER.anytime by ANYBODY!
@dempsey981 you think? I thought pros tried to avoid punches. maybe your boxing instructor has a different philosophy but, in that case, he is lucky to be alive.
@antoniocherry ha ha damn yer stupid.uh yes the general idea is to learn and apply defense, but OFTEN the opposing fighter has other plans YA THINK?Yes the goal is to"try" to avoid shots, the other guys "philosophy"is to knock yer fuckin brains out however.know what i mean pal?
Arguello We Miss You! Thanks for the memories! Thank you for treating me and my son Little David with so much love and respect every year at the Boxing Hall of Fame!
Hey do you remember the name of Arguello's opponent in his " 1 fight come back tour " LOL ? All I remember is AA the former champ comes out of retirement. Gets beat on for like 7 or 8 rounds non stop and then knocks the guy out cold as a wedge. A great one hitter quitter like this one. I think it was late 84 or early 85. Thanks for posting, Alexis Arguello was great !
Are you thinking of the Billy Costello fight? That fight took place on 02.09.86 and Arguello was trailing going into the 4th round when BOOM! The right hand landed, Costello made it to his feet but it was purely academic. It was over moments after that.
@DandDskeeto against costello, arguello was not getting beat on by any means. i think you were listening too much to the announcers that didnt seem to know shit about what was going on in that fight. go watch the fight again and you'll see arguello was in COMPLETE control from the opening bell to the moment he KO'd costello.
@The7thSunSon OK thanks I'll check it. That does sound slightly familiar though, perhaps it was the announcers. I do remember thinking at the time that they were running their mouth a lot.
@DandDskeeto i think you're talking about arguello vs ruben olivares, that's the fight when arguello got his first world championship title...first he was losing 'cause he was only 20 years old,he was a roockie, but powerful..he knock the guy out after losing against him...
that was like a shot of NYQUIL, Alexis puttin heads to bed!!! Rooney saw stars, shit he saw the big dipper and everythang with that one!!! i loved watching those fights in the '80's on reg. tv. instead of this PPV crap.
Thank you, I don't feel he deserved it. That is of course, "if" he was murdered.
But he had been dealing with depression for YEARS and even spent a night on a boat in a lake, gripping a pistol, crying, trying to decide whether he should pull it or not. Very sad, the man needed help, and no one helped him.
The sandinista Maffia is very powerfull, everybody have fear, They can reach you at the end of the world and kill you and your family and makes appear as accident, The Arguello's Family were intimidated, and dont allow them ,to see the corpse, Arguello suffer boycot from Sandinistas, they wanted to ignore his decisions and killed him
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
listing it as a 1 punch knockout is ridiculous. It's 2nd round so clearly he has landed punches and if you mean it happened in one punch, well of course, as do 50% of boxing knockouts.
As boxing goes it IS a 1 punch KO. I spoke to Kevin Rooney a few years back when we were at a boxing card in South Texas and he himself referred to it as a one punch KO. Stick to your wrestling buddy.
Yeah, usually a boxer gets dazed by a good punch then the consecutive punches knock him down. Here, Rooney had his wits about him until he got hit with that ONE punch that turned off the lights..
they hide the corpse from his own family , ..his daughters couldnt see him before the embalming, Forensic Physicians was trained to say what Lenin Cerna wanted. They showed a corpse in a Tv,but his face was covered with a blanket, but the body dont have a tatto in his right arm, Alexis had a Tatto in his right arm...
They are a kind of commmunist party in Nicaragua Central America,..but not a regular party, but a mafia organization that deals with drus, weapons, ..etc..they get the goverment by electoral fraud,
is a party caracterized by murder . Alexis was a governor of Managua, but the sandinistas wanted to manipulate him.. they murder Alexis.
Spreading conspiracy theories does nothing to assuage the death of such a great fighter and man. Where's your sources? Leave the reporting to more established and credible outlets. As for this clip, nasty...straight nasty right hand. But Alexis was a class act, instead of running away and celebrating, he went to see how Rooney was doing....what a class act he was.
A possibility of course, as there is a possibility that he committed suicide or was killed by extortionist or thieves/drug pushers. But this guy over here is convinced that the government did it and knows how they did it; in addition, he seems to have been at the coroners and funeral home by the details he's provided. He's called this government a mafia involved in drug and weapon smuggling. If such an accusation was made about the US, would u call it a conspiracy theory or "a good possibly?"
Good point in my opinion though when they call out a conspirarcy theory involving the U.S. just my opinion now more often then not like ur 911 world trade centers landing on the moon stage ufo crash they are farfetched theories less then likely to have happened but in arguello's murder i say good possibly more likely to have happened rather than just a conspirarcy theory
Of course, Daniel Ortega has History of Assasination even of his closer friends, or colaborators, An examples: Herty Lewites, Carlos Guadamuz, Carlos Fonseca, Narciso Zepeda, .etc..
perfect right hand, Alexis once said he aimed at the top of the chest, so the right hand would arc onto the chin! as good a right hand as tommy hearns & similar build, long arms & legs for leverage!!! RIP
It's something that he straight melted Rooney yet his concern for his well being after laminating his ass. A weird dichotomy for a boxer. He always was like that. Arguello was special
Alexis was perhaps Central America's greatest athlete, a three time world boxing Champion, a politician and a well respected man both on and off the ring. He was in the arena cheering on Carlos "little famous" Hernandez as Carlos was becoming El Salvador's first world champion a few years ago. "Que Dios te vendiga Campeon" . We are very sad to see you go champion.....May you serve the lord well........................
a great champ. r.i.p. i rememeber seeing this fight on tv. back in the good old days when you could see a great fight on a saturday afternoon on free tv. r.i.p. wide word of sports, cbs, and nbc boxing.
Arguello era mi inspiracion cuando empeze a boxear joven. Queria ser un flaco devastador como ese gran campeon. Todos se aferraban a Gomez y Tito como son boricuas pero en eso tuve que alejar lo de la raza ;). Arguello is the true tragedy not the weirdo Michael Jackson.. respect to him but this man was a warrior who even fought the jungle war after being famous Champ.straight heart
Wow, it's amazing how he slips two jabs like he's doing mitt work in the gym, and then fires off that right hand. Straight as a mofo-ing arrow...

I'd have to take Arguello by decision.

DandDskeeto 2 years ago
Are you thinking of the Billy Costello fight? That fight took place on 02.09.86 and Arguello was trailing going into the 4th round when BOOM! The right hand landed, Costello made it to his feet but it was purely academic. It was over moments after that.
jperez9805 2 years ago
@DandDskeeto against costello, arguello was not getting beat on by any means. i think you were listening too much to the announcers that didnt seem to know shit about what was going on in that fight. go watch the fight again and you'll see arguello was in COMPLETE control from the opening bell to the moment he KO'd costello.
The7thSunSon 1 year ago
@The7thSunSon OK thanks I'll check it. That does sound slightly familiar though, perhaps it was the announcers. I do remember thinking at the time that they were running their mouth a lot.
Any way you slice it, it was great KO.
DandDskeeto 1 year ago
@DandDskeeto i think you're talking about arguello vs ruben olivares, that's the fight when arguello got his first world championship title...first he was losing 'cause he was only 20 years old,he was a roockie, but powerful..he knock the guy out after losing against him...
rodolfgd 1 year ago
@rodolfgd
I wasn't referring to that bout. I sure remember it though. He was great. My recollection was just a little hazy about his last fight.
The fight game lost a class act when he retired.

No. Hell no. Sounds like a cliche but he fell in with a bad crowd.
hoohaw286 2 years ago
Thank you, I don't feel he deserved it. That is of course, "if" he was murdered.
But he had been dealing with depression for YEARS and even spent a night on a boat in a lake, gripping a pistol, crying, trying to decide whether he should pull it or not. Very sad, the man needed help, and no one helped him.

The sandinista Maffia is very powerfull, everybody have fear, They can reach you at the end of the world and kill you and your family and makes appear as accident, The Arguello's Family were intimidated, and dont allow them ,to see the corpse, Arguello suffer boycot from Sandinistas, they wanted to ignore his decisions and killed him

listing it as a 1 punch knockout is ridiculous. It's 2nd round so clearly he has landed punches and if you mean it happened in one punch, well of course, as do 50% of boxing knockouts.
Dante1Savage 2 years ago
As boxing goes it IS a 1 punch KO. I spoke to Kevin Rooney a few years back when we were at a boxing card in South Texas and he himself referred to it as a one punch KO. Stick to your wrestling buddy.
jperez9805 2 years ago
Yeah, usually a boxer gets dazed by a good punch then the consecutive punches knock him down. Here, Rooney had his wits about him until he got hit with that ONE punch that turned off the lights..

Alexis was murdered by Sandinistas,
they hide the corpse from his own family , ..his daughters couldnt see him before the embalming, Forensic Physicians was trained to say what Lenin Cerna wanted. They showed a corpse in a Tv,but his face was covered with a blanket, but the body dont have a tatto in his right arm, Alexis had a Tatto in his right arm...
enricucho33 2 years ago
what are sandinistas?why did kill alexis arguello?
GusTheBus82 2 years ago
They are a kind of commmunist party in Nicaragua Central America,..but not a regular party, but a mafia organization that deals with drus, weapons, ..etc..they get the goverment by electoral fraud,
is a party caracterized by murder . Alexis was a governor of Managua, but the sandinistas wanted to manipulate him.. they murder Alexis.
enricucho33 2 years ago
Spreading conspiracy theories does nothing to assuage the death of such a great fighter and man. Where's your sources? Leave the reporting to more established and credible outlets. As for this clip, nasty...straight nasty right hand. But Alexis was a class act, instead of running away and celebrating, he went to see how Rooney was doing....what a class act he was.
Tecun85 2 years ago
It's no fairy tale conspiracy theory there's a good possibly he was murdered by his country's government especially when they have a history of it.
daxlt 2 years ago
A possibility of course, as there is a possibility that he committed suicide or was killed by extortionist or thieves/drug pushers. But this guy over here is convinced that the government did it and knows how they did it; in addition, he seems to have been at the coroners and funeral home by the details he's provided. He's called this government a mafia involved in drug and weapon smuggling. If such an accusation was made about the US, would u call it a conspiracy theory or "a good possibly?"
Tecun85 2 years ago
Good point in my opinion though when they call out a conspirarcy theory involving the U.S. just my opinion now more often then not like ur 911 world trade centers landing on the moon stage ufo crash they are farfetched theories less then likely to have happened but in arguello's murder i say good possibly more likely to have happened rather than just a conspirarcy theory
daxlt 2 years ago
Of course, Daniel Ortega has History of Assasination even of his closer friends, or colaborators, An examples: Herty Lewites, Carlos Guadamuz, Carlos Fonseca, Narciso Zepeda, .etc..

Absolutely. Arguello was the epitome of what Mike Tyson would refer to as a "Bloodthirsty Gentleman". Thanks for your post.
jperez9805 2 years ago
Alexis was perhaps Central America's greatest athlete, a three time world boxing Champion, a politician and a well respected man both on and off the ring. He was in the arena cheering on Carlos "little famous" Hernandez as Carlos was becoming El Salvador's first world champion a few years ago. "Que Dios te vendiga Campeon" . We are very sad to see you go champion.....May you serve the lord well........................
