I know this aint' gonna make me popular, but I'm not gonna preach to the choir here.. Maltin's right as rain. I saw the film itself here on YouTube. I tried to forget "Wizard" and accept this on it's terms. And on it's merits--not very good. Oh, it's perfect for little kids who want a good scary movie to watch on Halloween and think "Wizard" is sappy, wanna be scared. But when it wants to be fun and cheerful, fails miserably. Oz is a place to stay away from.
i feel like elaine in seinfeld when she sees everyone in a restaurant eating snickers bars with knives and forks. "are you all insane? has the world gone mad?" this is seriously one of the best movies ever made, and i can't UNDERSTAND what the heck people are thinking when they're watching it!! from leonard maltin, i mean come ON! i'm shockingly disappointed in all the negative reviewers, not because of the negative review, but because of their explanations of WHY they give it negative reviews.
@MyMerryMelodies Agreed. The criticism I mostly come up against is that it's "too scary". Like, people are so freaked out they don't go back. That I don't get. I saw it as a kid, loved every minute, still do. Is it scary? Yeah. There are nasty, frightening baddies in it. But there are heroes, too! They win! And on the subject of "joyless", Dorothy is happy as hell to make these new friends, and overjoyed to see her old ones again. There's great joy here, and triumphant moments. Infuriating!
lol eye-popping clay mation everybody!

I think Leo made a great decision by not comparing this film to the original.
I also think that his review was a lot better than the one Siskel and Ebert made for RTO (for various reasons).

His beard looks painted on. Like Hollywood Hogan's.

At least he's nicer than Siskel and Ebert.
