techno uses breaks, because techno uses drum elements of electro funk and chicago house. chicago house uses breaks of electro. electro derived from hip hop. hip hop uses breaks. breaks are used in several electronic genres as you see. breaks are drum elements of non electronic genres like funk and soul. stylistic origins of breaks is the genre soul.
You people crack me up when you spend time commenting about whether something is "techno" or "house" or "tech-house". Can somebody explain why semantics matter at all in music?
@jfs250 it`s not really about semantics it`s about different genres. Techno, House, Techhouse all share similar sounds but they are different genres and therefore have their own distinctive sound. To the uneducated ear all these genres might sound very similar but there are subtle differences in the production. By the way i`m not saying you`re musically uneducated i`m just trying to answer your question.
MOst def' also remember most genres are defined by scenes at the time 87 - 89 acid house 89-92 detroit house / techno 92 - 96 uk rave hardcore 96- 00 trance / deep house ... same with Jungle's progression to drum & bass, subtle differences that as a massive electronica nerd I can single out.
On the contrary, it does matter to most people, otherwise there'd be no such thing as a musical genre and that would be plain stupid. Chairlog sounds very educated about music and most people would agree with his summary. We don't see your 'armchair expert' opinion of monumental validity do we? Try thinking in future before taking the easy option of slagging off other peoples views.
Oh right so there's no such thing as 'Rock' 'Country' 'Classical' 'Pop' 'Reggae' etc..... It's not a case whether (you) believe it 'matters' it's called a GENRE, that is a word to describe and categorise different styles of music.
Notice that my original comment did not say "what is a genre?". My original comment was just something I've observed. I'm a 26yo jazz musician from NYC. I also collect club records from the 70s ("funk" and "disco"), 80s ("boogie", "house"), and 90s ("techno"), so I've spent time thiking about these things.
I guess what bums me out is that a lot of DJs these days program entirely out of "tech house" or "deep house", or what have you, and end up with a homogeneous-sounding set. I wish people could be inspired by the entire repertoire.
Of course it is.. It's got the most simple tr909 4/4 kickpattern u can possibly get. To say Kenny Larkin isn't techno is like saying T99 - Anasthasia is classic techno like some idiot did recently on youtube -.- rofl!! :P
Thanks RFB, great tune. For anyone confused about whether this is or isn't techno ... the music made by some Detroit producers from sometime in the early '80s was influenced by such sounds as Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Human League, PIL and other Euro post punk and NR outfits, but also sprang directly from the city's strong black music tradition (MOTOWN). All possible because of a healthy disregard for genres. Techno is not all bang bang bang. Free your ass and your mind will follow!
uhm in my opinion techno has to be fast and bang bang bang otherwise is another style, this track is detroit jazz breakbeat . i free my ass but this remain breakbeat sorry.
@rob57uk good to see that there are some intelligent people who comment on youtube. Most of the comments on here are just so stupid. You know yr history, thanks
@dwaynedibbly lol this is fucking detroit breakbeat, you are the ignorant not me . stop stalking my comments in all youtube, you know my comments are the best lol stop follow them .
If it ain't made in Detroit, it's probably some bullshit. This is funky & moody; straight from the "D"..... Yesterday, today & tomorrow...TECHNO, for those who know!
You probably have heard hardstyle or hardtechno, which have nothing to do with these pieces of art. This is the heart of the genre. Sorry for my bad English :)
This was released in 1993? Man these guys were way ahead of the times. It is excellent foreshadowing of what was to come. If you listen to DnB or techno nowadays the beats are highly influenced by guys like Kenny.
I really love this tune!!! <3
