@MicrosoftsourceCode,,,, Its true,,maybe I was not into the new music Carlos was doing,,he did fusion jazz and spirit stuff after the 70s were over,,check out the music my friend,,wasnt he Devadip Santana in the early 80S ?
what i learned from santa is that lead guitar is not all about speed. its about making music with the notes that you play with the band behind you. you only should apply speed when necessary, or when the music calls for it IE to add a little aggression in the progression of sound. its not all about you the guitar player, its about your music and the audience listening to the guitar and getting entranced. which is what carlos is good at.
Yes, I know. But, the effects pedals were limited. Check out out Jimi in Woodstock. I believe he had a FuzzFace, a Univibe and a wah pedal. Or, BB King, Ritchie Blackmore, Chuck Berry or Joe Pass, who didn't use any back then. Pedals give cool sounds, but it still comes down to the player's fingers and soul.
@ragdad007 LOL sound effects were the big thing in those days. Carlos was very sublets with the sound effects but got known for the use of sustaining a note indefinitely. Most guitarists could not do a long sustain without getting feedback. I personally loved the way he would blend guitar notes with the keyboard sounds on tunes like Europa, Jugando and Dance sister dance
Funny, these guys probably had more in common with the music of West Africa than the major soul acts that comprised the majority of the Soul to Soul festival.
@codehendrix + @54081470 Early Santana Bands originated that feel/African sound by fusing Salsa, Rock & Latin Jazz (albums 1-3), then adding Samba (albums 4-6). All rooted in Afro Cuban/Afro Brazilian percussion rhythms DRIVEN by great collaborating band members like Jose Chepito Arias, Mike Carabello, Mike Shrieve, Armando Peraza, Coke Escovedo, James Mingo Lewis, Airto. Here Willie Bobo sits in on timbales. Those Santana Bands had creative, pioneering All Stars at every position.
Este clip es parte del documental "Soul to Soul", filmado durante un concierto en Ghana en 1971. Aparecen también: Wilson Pickett; Ike & Tina Turner; The Staple Singers; Roberta Flack y The Voices of East Harlem; alternan varios músicos ghaneses en el documental. El objetivo del concierto fue regresar a las raíces africanas y tener un intercambio cultural con la madre patria.
Yo vi este documental en un cine de la ciudad de México a fines de 1971.
This clip is of the film "Soul To Soul" was a concert held in Accra, Ghana on March 6, 1971 by an array of American R&B, soul, rock, and jazz musicians.
Several at the show remarked that Santana, despite having only one black member, played the most "African-sounding" music of the night.
American musicians: Wilson Pickett; Ike & Tina Turner; The Staple Singers, The Voices of East Harlem and others. Also many african musicians. I enjoy this film in 1971 in Mexico City. Buy in cd universe

Además de Santana aparecen también Ike & Tina Turner; Wilson Pickett; Less McCann y Eddie Harris; The Staple Singers; Willie Bobo on timbale; y Roberta Flack. @MicrosoftsourceCode Yes. I have. He friended me on FB. Very cool person, and yeah he looks like a 61 yr old man, nothing wrong with that. He never gave up music and took another vocation. Music is still in his heart and soul! Peace!
on cinco de mayo my hstory teacher was trying to fing mexican music and he pulled up this video and was confused why it wasn't mexican music and he's 57 i'm 13 and he was completley amazed that I knew about this type of music he was like " isnt Santana mexican music?" i said "no the lead guitariat is carlos santana" he said "how do you know that" i said back "Because Neal Schon was in Santana before he formed Journey". He was really embarresed
I listened to the third album relentlessly..and this is the first time I have seen Neil and Carlos together on stage.....Thanks.....Jungle Strut It's Beautiful !!!!
i would die and go to heaven if Carlos Santana at this age when he was young and Omar LOpez Rodriguez from the mars volta played a show together after taking a shitload of acid why because there styles are so innovative that it would be badass to see that high thats my dream i look up to them both as guitar gods
Where's Chepito?? That's the only player missing from this best group Carlos ever put on stage. The percussion section of Shrive-Areas-Carabello was world class bar none. VIVA SANTANA PA SIEMPRE !!!
@joeholl3333 yes he' gets a fatter tone w/ a paul & i wonder if he is playing a mesa boogie at this point i think by now he should have been hooked up w/ Mesa by then ..great combo... i had a mesa mkiic w/ a hi watt bottom 4x12 cabinet and a les paul..great sound..

You were very fortunate to see them back in the day,I agree Neal &Greg were a big part of santana that should of stayed around, but the of course when that door closed another door opened which was journey<Im glad for the songs they wrote with the all time great Steve Perry and gave journey their unique quality sound.
I agree with you whole heartedly ...Gregg is from my home town of Palo Alto, CA ...Though 5 yrs older than me ...I saw them many times back in the day. In fact many times as The Santana Blues Band and was totally shocked at the Palo Alto High Grad night in '69 when they played. I expected the same blues line-up and they unleashed this totally fresh sound. It was 2 months before Woodstock and as seminal a musical moment as there has been in my life...
You are correct, Sir ...He went to High School in San Mateo, right up the road from me and is 2 yrs younger than me ...This is right after he joined ...You'll note that he hasn't really worked himself into any leads yet...
relax, man. when bob dylan heard jimi do all along the watchtower he said "well, that's jimi's song now." same with otis redding & aretha franklin's version of respect. sometimes people write songs & it turns out they were waiting for another person to come along make it come alive. this song is a good example. peace :)
I have heard rumors that Carlos was egocentric and wanted to be seen always as the man on the guitar. I often wondered why he hires Neal as a 2nd guitarist.
@MicrosoftsourceCode Truth is Santana was movin' towards the fusion side of jazz.Rolie and Schon wanted to rock-out more or less. Thus Journey was formed, their first 3 lps. showed they had the right idea.
Batiz was not his "teacher." Yes, Batiz introduced him to the blues and admired him, but Batiz did not teach him "how to" play the guitar. This is a myth. Carlos in his biography said Batiz was stingy and would turn his back so Carlos wouldn't see what he was doing. This is awsome...what a band...Michael Shrieve on drums is a true master of rhythm (and so young he was there!)...what the hell...the whole band are masters!...I think getting the second guitarist in was a mistake though. The people their don't seem to get it though...? Ghana...the country of Hi-Life and Afro beat! Thanks for the video!
santana doing what he does best playing from the soul and listening with his heart feeling the moment and rythm unlike any guitar player and if there is another tell me cuz i sure as hell wanna know
somebody said that slash was one of the only ones better than santana, and I responded: 'maybe, but santana is more famous because slash must be drunk, passed out on his own urine (face-down) with his ass sticking out into the air,and a huge, black guy (just got out of prison) is giving it to him from behind.' is that a good response or what? hehe
It looks like the lower manual on Gregg Rolie's Hammond isn't working and I see a broken key on the upper manual. Must have been a rough time getting it to Africa!
The best Santana era. Together with "Chepito" Arias (who isn't on this video) made 3 superb albums. Look at Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie (guitar and keyboards), 2 years later of this festival, they founded Journey.
Terifficly Inspiring Brill/Brilliant,This band made an album called Barbbroletter/in early 80's after listening went out and put deposit on sax/ eventually learnt to play.Thats Inspiring?
This starts with Jungle Strut, what a gem, from SAntana III, this and Batuka are the best and most underrated tracks of that album. The rendition BMW is just as great, I think this is the best 10 minute of Santana live playing I've ever seen, thank you mic'sourcecode por posting it. You should post more from this concert, if you have more,

Thanks for the video!

somebody said that slash was one of the only ones better than santana, and I responded: 'maybe, but santana is more famous because slash must be drunk, passed out on his own urine (face-down) with his ass sticking out into the air,and a huge, black guy (just got out of prison) is giving it to him from behind.' is that a good response or what? hehe

Brilliant! This sound is why I got into Santana in the early 70s. I loved the look too!

It looks like the lower manual on Gregg Rolie's Hammond isn't working and I see a broken key on the upper manual. Must have been a rough time getting it to Africa!

Neal Schon joined the band at age 16 and played at Woodstock
n2motocross 3 years ago
If you look at the Woodstock Santana video you can see Carlos is the single guitar, just like all the personnel listings for Woodstock say it is.
MilesTrane21 3 years ago
Schon was not at the Woodstock concert. He joined the band in 1971, and left with Rollie in 73 to help form Journey.

Willie Bobo was brought in because chepito had suffered an enurism or however you spell it! I love this, no other band can do this!

The best Santana era. Together with "Chepito" Arias (who isn't on this video) made 3 superb albums. Look at Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie (guitar and keyboards), 2 years later of this festival, they founded Journey.

Classic Santana, Music and Line Up. This is what Santana were all about for me unlike Supernatural where he was virtually a guest on his own album!
