  • hey look its chuck norris's go kart

  • Does that giant fish car move?

  • its cool, but i think it would be alot cooler in a big truck, like and old mack, or international. or in and older boat like others have on here. It seems like your just not getting the feel of the true power in a car. Put it to work spinning a prop, or pulling heavy weight.

  • @cobra96svt570

Well, those WW2 fighter engines weren't designed to pull heavy loads. Rolls Royce did however develop a non-supercharged version of the Merlin V12 for tanks, called the Meteor. Needless to say it was re-engineered to meet tank use.

  • @McLarenMercedes not re-enginered, the aluminium parts were just cast in iron and the supercharger was removed before it was given a detuning to produce more torque at low rpm's. All the parts are interchangeable You could quite feasibly re tune one given time and a bucket of money.

  • Needs more louvers.

  • it would be interesting to see some detail on how this was done ,as in what gearbox etc.

  • This guy is my grandads friend. I sat in it at crawley air show when i was really young, burnt myself on the dam exhaust getting out lol. And ys it is the merlin engine, it's just that they had to remove the supercharger because there isn't enough room under the car to fit it, as this is where it was on the plane. The car is based on a mk1 rolls royce phantom.

  • one hell of a car and congrats to the fellas who made it but come on lets see the tyres light up.

  • wacky Races

  • All motor, barely car

  • Right engine.. wrong vehicle.. :)

  • This is a METEOR engine, NOT a Merlin. The Merlin was supercharged, this isn't.

  • Now that, is the most beautiful contraption on Earth.

The Bugatti Veyron is an over-engineered pseudo-show piece; but THAT. Well; that really is wonderful.

;) I think we could call it "the Car That Won the War." After all; its built around the Engine That Won the War - so why not?

  • @SirVladDracula because it was never involved in the war??

i don't see where you're really going with this??

  • Now, i'll bet that car's FAST!

  • What a sound ! Amazing ! I love it !

  • I like it but it isn't doing 300 MPH like that.

Those tires and the rest of much of the car sure don't look up to the task.

The engine has more torque than people realize.

It can twist metal in the driveline like taffy.

    -g

  • it did say "theoretical", didn`t it? I wouldn`t even go past 120mph in that car. But wow, what an engine that is and the sound is just awesome.

  • O,I agree,make may no mistake-

    it's a labour of love&artwork.

You just have to see it a rolling engine/auotomotive design display-not a serious Land Speed Car,etc.

Only 648 people have ever gone over 200mph at Bonneville(traction is not what people think)and there are hundreds of competitors each summer.

An admirer and an enthusuat of avante-garde aircraft engines&installations I can certainly say that anyone that than can do better, should.

At least it's not under glass!

    Peace,

    -g

  • Haha, look at those tyres, If a fly sits on the throttle pedal, those tires rip apart from the torque

  • Coool ! but why ?? Sounds great !

  • ART

  • why?

    Why not? :)

  • Good enough reason !

  • sounds like a truck there is no grunt.

  • Trucks pull tens of tons of weight why do you think they have no grunt?

  • I mean puting those pipes on it is like mussling a tiger.

  • a beautiful car but that exaust ruins it...it;s like a water drain tube..under the car...under not along it...it's not a truck for gods sake...

  • yeah really. couldn't have at least chromed it? looks like shit

  • you gota be kidding?

  • kidding about what? the exhaust don't look like shit?

  • it was a reply

  • you didn't answer the question

  • its the style of car, they all had this style exhuast, u are noob?

  • try using a language when using noob in your sentance.

the pipe looks horible by any standards.

  • should we put on a big chrome muffler for your noob likings? this is a enthusiest car not a honda civic retard

  • i think u're retarded. i said, put the pipes to the sides, this one looks like the shit pipe ill eventually stick thru the windshield of ur nissan

  • my nissan?, what you talking about.......

  • Actually "Nissan" is a compliment because they have a massive share of the American market because American car designers and workmanship is woeful.

  • Is that Doyley driving it?

  • Packard and stromberg were responsible for the continued development of the merlin power plant even more so than RR was - by the end of the war packard built merlins were pushing out 1600 hp on W.E.P and thanks to strombergs direct injection carburetor they could fly inverted indefinitely - your quite right about the craftsmanship too not too many of us left that do this sort of thing definitely teach those chaps on discovery channel a thing or two!

  • this is not jay leno's tank car...

  • @hasouras19 Can't be bothered to read all the comments.... But did someone think it was?

  • @hasouras19 Sorry if that sounded like a stupid question, it just seemed fairly obvious that it is not.... What with the title clearly saying it is Spitfire engined lol.

  • My dear fellow this car is not the Leno's thank car!!

Listen, it doesent looks like a Diesel engine!

  • this is a Merlin i worked at the shop that did allot of the coachworks for it and yes they did put merlins in tanks - The Churchill- except they call the engine the Meteor because it lacked a supercharger and was significantly larger than the original Merlin they even used merlins in the PT boats like J.F.K was captain of it was an engine 50 years ahead of its time way better than anything germany had power to weight ratio wise

  • I thought PT boats used Packards or Allisons. Lots of craftmanship in that bodywork not seen anymore. Very graceful and pretty car.

  • Yes your right they were built by packard but they were merlins built under license by them the allison engine V-1710-27 was slated to be used in both the P-51 mustang and the PT boats but when the RAF ordered a crop of P-51 they instructed the manufacturer to fit the R.R merlin instead of the allison on testing the engineers found the engine to be much more reelable and it also made the P-51 the best plane of the war increase speed higher rate of climb lower stall speed

  • Best plane of the war?

Maybe the one most spoken of.

The Messerschmitt Me262 jet was arguable the most advanced fighter of the war but there were too few of them and Hitler foolishly wanted 3 out 4 to be assigned as attack-bombers, a role for which they were ill suited.

As for the piston engined fighters the Focke-Wulf FW190 was very manuevrable and was better than any allied fighter in most conditions.

Germany was short on fuel and couldn't put much in the air by 1943 as it was.

  • the Me262 was introduced eight months before the war ended the Merlin engine had been around since 1933 the spitfire since 1936 and the P-51 since 1942 the FW190 was slower in dives turns and strait out speed compared to either a mustang or spitfire and its BMW801 engine was a 41.8 L engine which produced 1970hp and incorporated sodium filled valves something the merlin had since inception in 1933 the Merlin was only 27L and produced 1301HP by the time it was operational in 1934

  • the advantages of either aircraft over a FW190 were apparent and their advance was maintained throughout the duration of the war but I suppose the greatest testament to the superiority of these planes is the fact that im not writing this in german

  • wicked man must be really expensive

  • omg that is a plane engine in a car and its street legal

  • they made jag's a rols royce stock with these man merlin V12, Mustang and Spitfire engines.

  • Better get some beefier rubber on the back of that thing.....hit it once, and no tires left..lol

  • The Merlin was 27 ltrs.

It's bigger brother, the Griffon was 36.7 ltrs.

The Merlin produced about 2100-2500 BHP.

A well running Griffon can produce approx. 35 BHP.

But unfortunatly the are hard to get these days.....

  • lol

  • The Jay Leno car was built by a couple of guys that go under the name of "the blast-o-line brothers" and have built a number of spectacular cars. 2 of which had the sherman tank engine.

  • The Jay Leno car was build by artist Michael Leeds and was named the Blastolene Special. Jay Leno purchased the car and has since made some changes, including adding turbos. Leeds and another artist have continued to make a number of large 4-wheeled creations.

  • Yeh,,,, but where is the cruise control and electric windows!!!!

  • Doesn't Jay Leno own this car now...or something very similar?

  • Noo... Jay Leno's car has a tank motor... that's why his car is call the Jay Leno Tank Car

  • OK...wasn't sure.

  • I'm sure this engine moved just fine when it was shooting down messerschmitts...and last I checked the ZR1 and CTS-V blow the doors off the best Porsche and BMW have to offer...greetings from America

  • Whetever you say...but the lap times for both cars and their German counterparts tell a different story...While the leather in the german cars may be nicer the vette and the caddy are simply faster, everywhere. Thats a fact...The guy above made an assinine statement. Why not appreciate the good points of everything instead of being biased and one sided?

  • well sais mate nowt worse than a kraut sounding off is there

  • Deutschbag...

  • Um, an Ultima GTR720 (a British supercars with an American V8) is faster than a German Veyron...

  • Comment removed

  • This could be the British Counterpart of the "Brutus" car with a 47 liter BMW V12 engine.

  • I'd design it so the exhaust pipes went under the car. Would SUCK to get burned by one of them getting in or out of the car.

  • The Final Objective 57 chev bel-air powered by a Merlin is incredible. Theres a video of it somewhere on here.

  • Now THAT is a goddamn CAR.

  • drive i want to see it driving

  • I'm fairly sure that engine could get that car moving much faster than 300 Mph if the thing didn't fly apart before it reached top speed.

I'd sure hate to fill that thing up though, probably gets 10 gallons per mile fuel economy.

  • FANTASIC! now how about a harrier jump jet engined car? now that would realy shift!

  • hay if he reved it the fuel will go

  • Does he ever rev it?

  • wow, that car/rocket is stunning, the coach work is beautiful, liking the vintige exhaust design, not to sure it running enough power though.....lol, might need to slap on a another pair of superchargers lol. na, but seriously, that is jaw droppingly sexy.

  • overkill!

  • No such thing.

    (moa powah!)

  • amazing car - thanks for posting

  • i would hate to be doing those 300MPH in that open cockpit....it's definatly a very rare car..lol 27 liter engine..same used as the spitfire...it's a spitfire without wings

  • 27 liter......

    27

  • 27 liter......

    27

  • it would still take off, unfortunately :O

  • The sound that help save a country!! beautiful!

  • search under 55 chevy merlin on youtube and have a look at it it drives was legaliy registersted in Oz

  • IMO it wants 6 pipes coming out either side, otherwise great, glad it's been done..

  • talk about overkill

  • I say old chum, rather spiffing machine, wot. Still reckon Hadfields Merlin 55 chev takes the cake.

  • wow. that car is gianormous

  • smoke those tires!!!

  • ITS THE HANDLYE SPECIAL.

  • This is amazing man , so much power and torque there:) and the engine that will do 5Million ks ... ahaah its a plane engine of course:) and in a car:)

  • i believe someone did exactly the same back in the 1970s with a Ford Capri, in the UK, and it moved, and was road legal..it was broken up in the late 80s when the custom car fad died in the UK.

  • IIRC it was destroyed when it caught fire....it had a RR bonnet, a Capri rear end, looked cool...and then it died.

  • The Car you refer to was built by John Dodd who was a gearbox specialist in the Bromley or Epsom area. It was called 'The Beast'.

Rolls Royce copped the arse cos he had the Rolls Badge on it. It did catch fire in France I think but he built it again as a hatchback looking car, a bit like a massive Scimitar. Street Machine magazine or Custom Car showed it at Milton Keynes once. I think it may still exist somewhere.

  • I think it was also featured in an episode of Top Gear about 10 years ago or something.

  • Today we will be driving at an altitude of 25 thousand feet and should be in Emerald in around 40 Minutes.

  • Nobody could ever find a clutch for it.

  • haha thats so true lol

  • Wonder how many gallons per mile it does?

  • does this thing actually move, or is it an up dated 'chitty chitty bang bang' !!!!LOL

  • listen to the supercharger whine!

  • I have 2 but not selling!1 for the boat and 1 for???

    spare.

  • okay, so theres one in the world, how much does he want for it?!

seriously though, i wouldnt mind being pointed in the direction of a person selling a rolls royce merlin engine, just for trolley use at first.

  • Ok, what is the cost, and can i get one in California?

  • There is only one in the world. It was built by the owner over a period of 21 years.

  • @bloodtypexneg LOL. and even if you could echeck in cali would kick your ass probably lol.

  • AWESOME!!!!!
