June was right. This was a Carter Family number I'd never heard. And I thought I'd heard every Carter Family recording ever made. Turns out, this was recorded by the Carters in 1935 on the ARC (American Record Company) label, after they had left RCA Victor. The 1935 recording is still in print and is a joy to hear, with Sarah Carter's strong vocal lead and Maybelle's guitar work very much in evidence. This 17th century ballad never enjoyed a better performance than the Carter version.

Also nice to think about the young June of the Carter Sisters Grand Ole Opry era, with June the star of the act out front while Maybelle and the other girls are backing her. June was great! This makes me sad. I loved the old Carter Family of the 1930's.....AP, Sarah, and Maybelle. And I loved Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters of the 1950's....Maybelle, June, Helen, and Anita. And I loved Johnny Cash and June in their hayday. But they should have retired to private life long before this was taped. Even the great ones don't know when to leave the stage.

Cash and Carter Family! Legends! Country Royalty! The King and Queen of Country music! Even in their later years, their great love and sense of humor was there! Their voices had lost some range and quality in their later years, but such legends can be excused for growing old together.
