I've watched this as a kid, and it scared the bejesus out of me. I knew that it was based on the book by Robert Bloch but I had never read it before. I'm reading it right now and it's awesome; as creepy as the movie, The only thing I don't like is the description of Norman Bates as a fat, bespectacled bookworm. Hitchcock wanted to create sympathy for the Norman character so he chose to cast Perkins for the role which is better choice. So I recommend the book for those who'd liked the movie...
If ever checked into a motel, i would have to make sure that the owner is not a homicdal maniac other wise if i didn't, i would end like that dead woman in the shower.
@Expectnomercy316 Sorry but, WTF!!! This movie is from 1960 it hasn't got any of the computer stuff. This movie messes with your mind, you get so trapped that you don't know what's happening arround you. And in the remake there is a crucial thing that its missing, ALFRED HITCHCOK. So if you please, shut up!
even the trailer is scary... when i was watching this, i had to keep looking around making sure no-one was in the room, at one point, i felt someone tapping on my shoulder, but no one was there... im so scared
Exactly, you fucking idiot. 1:00AM is one hour after midnight. And "night" is the term for when we humans sleep. Otherwise, night would mean 1:00PM in the afternoon. And I'm guessing, normal humans don't stay awake at 1:00 AM. So I am technically right when I call 1:00 AM "Night", because it generally is "Nightime" at that hour of the day...
@BENNYSIEGEL90 The same way the picture, the director, the movie "Never on Sunday" and its director(Jules Dassin) didn't won an Oscar! And that's because the Academy has a quite funny sense of what cinema really is.
AmericansMakeMeSick: We're "sick" (lol), but u, my xenophobic dickwad, are "Psycho".
This landmark horror/thriller/suspense film is consistently ranked in Top 10 "American Film Institute's" (AFI) 100 Greatest Films of All-Time. So what foreign film comes close to this masterpiece?!?! I didn't think so...
@MiKaylea I Really Love This Work Of Yours. You Choosed A Parcel Of Norman Bates' Monologue And Composed A Sery Of Scenes That Depicted His Words. This One Of My Favorite Movies Of All Times. I Thought This Was The Original/Official Trailer Until I Read Your Comment. I'd Love To See More Of Your Work. Cordialy.
Gotta pay respect to the movie that bore a HUGE inspiration to the greatest and most successful Independent film of all time: "Halloween".. thanks to Alfred Hitchcock and his masterpiece of "Psycho" oh for those who didn't know..Halloween's star Jamie Lee Curtis is the Daughter of the Mother in Psycho..just a quick fact for those who didn't know. :)
@TheSicdic It's a very cool movie! It's not scary compared to today's horror films of course, but for the time it was groundbreaking. And the plot is still interesting and suspenseful. Definitely give it a chance!
I have been watching a lot of Alfred Hitchcock lately and I just saw psycho last night. Then on tv this morning I was watching the show psych and they were doing a whole thing on Alfred Hitchcock using different movie scenes as clues and the main thing was psycho. I was like OMG.
Watched this in my film analysis class back in high school. I was in awe through out the whole thing, especially when mrs bates reveals herself. Fucking psycho indeed genius movie
I'm sorry, this looks gay. How the fuck is this garbage scary? Japanese horror films decimate this shit in a heartbeat. A horror film's definition is to leave you cringing in suspense and anticipation...leaving you with your eyes open at night. This doesn't deliver. This is more like a thriller. Excuse me, IS, a thriller. Nuff said.
@AmericansMakeMeSick japanese horror rely on cheap effects and gore. this "gay" movie is a classic suspense movie and alfred hitchcock was a master at suspense in his movies and his television programs. and besides we all know koreans make better "scary" movies than Japs anyway. take your homophobic american hating ass out of america if you hate it so much, no one here in america is begging for you to stay, you ignorant prick.
@AmericansMakeMeSick Stop hating on this movie! Psycho is one of the most famous horror/suspence movies of all time! It remains at the top because of the suspence, seeing what scares you isn't what is always scary! And sometimes more realistic matters of psychological fear does more than monsters and Japanese flicks. Alfred Hitchcock and his films remain the title of classic horror, so repsect!! And if you think this movie is such bullshit, then why'd you watch the trailer?
I read the book first when I was 12 and then watched the film when I was 13 and both are still one of my favorites. Each time I watch the movie I see more detalils thn before.
isnt it fascinating how an old film like this - a classic - still gives as more thrill than most of the newer films do? what i love about psycho is that you dont know who the killer is, and you wouldnt even think that the guy who actually is the killer, really could be a that cruel person. hitchcock new what scares us. everyone could point out a killer when the person obviously is a killer, but hitchcokck new that it is more thrilling if you dont know who it is.
Maybe gives a little too much away for first-time viewers, but a great trailer. Hitchcock's original trailers for this and The Birds were funny and somewhat entertaining on their own, but they don't really draw you in that well, at least for modern audiences...
This is not the only time ( Tony Perkins ) has done Drag. Watch the movie " Mahogany " and you will see Tony wearing a Orange wig & dress. He is the second model in a close up at the start of the film. I always thought it was a man but after taking a closer look you can see it is Tony.
That smile at the end...honestly, that's scary. I do kind of feel sorry for Norman, though. His mom must have been awful to him, and even though she's not around, she's still dominating him.
I love the classic monsters (DRACULA,WOLFMAN etc) But thank you Mr.Hitchcock for taking the monster movies out of the cobwebbed castles and bringing it right next door! Every modern day HORROR movie takes a bow to PSYCHO...Yes even you NIGHT of the LIVING DEAD
The reason Norman Bates rated #3 (and Hannibal Lecter rated #1 and D vadar was #2) on the all time 'bad guy' list, is because there is a psychological element to their horror. Good horror movies, IMHO connect you intimately with the villain, they allow you to see traits which turned them to evil which are ubiquitous in mankind. I think 'bad' horror movies, just have a generic bad guy who kills for some pointless reason. Norman Bates could be your neighbor. Could Freddy or Jason be?
'A walk in the shadows' is a two minute tense short revolving around Harry murdering his girlfriend as she found out his dark past, little does he know she has already told others.
@71QueenBitch I agree! Yes, I've had my share of Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the other Hollywood monsters, BUT, if it wasn't for PSYCHO, I WOULD NOT BE A HORROR FAN! To paraphase Robert Bloch (the author of Psycho), "Some people think that Psycho is (ALL) about the 'shower scene'." It's NOT. In my opinion, Psycho is about someone who is suffering from 'mental instability,' and (having) such a (mental) condition IS frightening."
Horror to me is when you're in a comfortable zone, then all the sudden you are taken out of that zone, and when you find out there are no rules anymore, sometimes it's too late. In many ways a killer can be looked at as a hero. Many people believe life is stalling freedom, but to face death in the face can change your life for the better. Others think that freedom, they have it, but once taken away, you realise what you take for granted. Horror teaches us more than a romance comedy ever could.
@Wolfquestiscool no, composers write the music for a film and hitchcock was a filmmaker. bernard herrmann wrote the score and did you know, hitchcock did not want music for the shower scene
I went on a tram tour at universal studios, nd when we went tht guy was there putting a dead body into the car at tht motel, nd then he came up nd glared at u while holding a knife.. o.o i got pics of it. pretty creepy... lol
@reesee02 I am spaniard but I haven't seen "Buried". Maybe. Although Reynolds is not a pionner like Anthony Perkins ( what a pity his poor next career). UN saludo!
Hey guys, we've made a new rock song about this great film, as well as songs about other awesome films such as The Wicker Man and The Departed. Please take some time to listen to some of our stuff :)
Never understood why some people I know considered Hitchcock's movies scary. In my opinion there are too many mistakes in details in Psycho that could have be avoided even back in those days.

@reesee02 I am spaniard but I haven't seen "Buried". Maybe. Although Reynolds is not a pionner like Anthony Perkins ( what a pity his poor next career). UN saludo!

Never understood why some people I know considered Hitchcock's movies scary. In my opinion there are too many mistakes in details in Psycho that could have be avoided even back in those days.
However, no offend guys.

I wish they would've released it in Techni-color when they had a chance! But Norman Bates was pretty handsome...lol
