  • Who actually looked up the movie "Dog Day Afternoon" He was speaking of?

  • Going against the governments doesn't make you the bad guy, it makes you a fucking hero and a patriot !.

  • Its weird that he uses Dog Day Afternoon as his example to criticize the lack of realism in Hollywood since that movie was based on a true story. Not to mention this movie is about as realistic as Harry Potter. Were they trying to be ironic here?

  • @Hellblazer311

I think he was talking about a more realistic sensibility in the way the characters acted as opposed to what actually transpires. In this way I think this movie is interesting in that it juxtaposes the two different aspects.

  • Okay, dumbass that put this together. You have to include the part when he gets up and the other guys follow him with the automatic weapons. That way, whoever is watching this gets completely hooked in to watching this. Right now it seems like some high rolling, holllywood power brokers pontificating about cinema. Way to fuck it up.

  • This dialog is fantastic. Thought provoking, intelligent, controversial. It allows the audience to form their own answers to what he is saying. Brilliant.

  • he hardly smokes his cigar lol...he just waves it along like a magician's wand

  • @Kingopersia it is nice and long, could be a nice smoke. And coffee - nice- but he does not finish either.

  • He never inhaled the smoke or anything. Lit the cigar and that was it

  • this is a blatent dig at the matrix. this movie had one special effect and halle berry's tits and nothing else to offer. bilge

  • @PeterZeeke And it obviously went over YOUR head big time.

  • Dark Machine.... that shit makes you jig, you can't help yourself.

  • (3:07) In one of the outtakes on the DVD, Travolta sips from an absolutely giant cup, like a soup bowl with a handle, totally straight faced. It's quality

  • It's ironic that he talks about realism in movies when this movie is far from it. PIle of crap!

  • great movie

  • the problem would be that they would have stormed thebuilding had they started killing them

  • Travalota's just jealous that Dog Day out performed Grease!! LOL

  • I disagree with all 3 of these guys. It wouldn't work because Dog Day Afternoon is based on a true story. Period.

  • You know what I don't get?

The guy is supposed to be untraceable. But he leaves a cigar with his DNA all over it in front of a bunch of cops.

  • @Blahgahbleh Yeah, but with how he took a few puffs. I don't think there would be enough skin cells deposited on that stogie to do an effective test. The same thing with the coffee cup.

  • ¥T

  • "Y'know the problem with Hollywood is they make shit; unbelievable, unremarkable shit."

FINALLY, someone tells it like it is!

  • His critique is, eerily, spot on

  • @kels1726 Damn dude, Fight Club would be way better imo anyway. This is great too, but FC oh man.

  • @Whatisright

which part in fight club again? i haven't seen it for ages... the beginning when he's got the gun to his own head?

i think this monologue would be more understood (in anybody acting it out) where as the fight club one would be confusing cos it relies on you not knowing that he's pointing the gun at his own head essentially. plus, IMO, this monologue is much more dark.

  • Even though the movie as a whole is just OK, I must say when I watched this scene for the first time I thought this was gonna be by far the best movie I would ever see.... best monologue/intro.

  • This is a spectacular scene. Travolta has really come in to his own as a real actor.

  • My God this was a bullshit! Who wrote the script? So the ending of Dog Day Afternoon is happy end? So it's not real? For Christs sakes.... The reality is the key to that film, something you never see in present day Hollywood movies - with all their happy ends. Happy ends are unreal and good movies, real movies always have inevitable ending!

Though this scene is well shot, color correction is quite pleasant and Travolta's acting is splendid! Yet the script ruins it....

  • Great scene! Classic. Yo wat cigar is he smoking??

  • i have always loved this intro, its so cool. He is using hollywood as an analogy to say "dont fuck with me, this isnt a film and it isnt gonna have a hollywood ending so dont try anything because i will fuck with these people" he says it so calm and so cool its more powerful than any ranting lunatic

atleast thats my take on it

  • This is the most complicated part of the film harder than the matrix to film. I love john travolta in this movie one of my favs the realism of his character is amazing the movie itself has an all star cast halle berry is one of my fav actresses. Love this movie if u havent seen it its a must c!

  • That was a good movie. Reminded me of Matrix in the style and colors...

  • Irony at it's finest.

Michael Bay is one of the worst directors ever.

  • How funny that Gabriel says 'the problem with hollywood is that they make shit", in a movie that comes from hollywood.

I think it's safe to say that 99% of movies made today is total crap, just shallow light weight junkfood for the brain without any meaning whatsoever.

However, swordfish was pretty good, i actually bought it on dvd.

  • @tsprojects1 the x men movies? star trek incredible hulk alot of movies are good ironman four brothers.

  • So wolverine, War machine, and Bolt walk into a coffe shop.....

  • Hahaha loved your comment ;).

  • cappuccino escapes, with the money, has sex with his girlfriend, no?

  • Faceoff and this movie is the best out of travolta as far as the role perception goes.

  • Well bad guy can win...

  • one of the top best movie quotes of alltime.

  • "...The cinematography, the acting, the screen play all top-notch....But...... *lights Cigar*.... they didn't push the envelope." = Pure Awesomeness

  • @jmaer91 agree

  • Check out Mossad etc, this is a very realistic movie.

  • Yeah, after all, anyone can 'break into the pentagon' that has 512 bit encryption by typing really quickly...

  • @harlequin2262 i didnt mean from that point of view i was on about the deeper meaning of black ops, agencies using subversive tactics thats why i mentioned mossad, i didnt mention that the hacking was realistic

  • This is one of my FAVORITE ALL-TIME movies. The realism on John Travolta character's opening dialogue is uncanny. It completely blows away the fantasy of good vs. bad. Or good vs. proposed evil. It brings reality to the forefront, by saying that an incompetent good guy can NEVER beat an intelligent and thought out villain. This is the absolute truth in life. No matter what parents may want to brain-wash their children into believing. Thats why this film is in my collection.

  • Loved it to. Don't you know where to find it?

  • godfather part 1 of course...

  • ive used this scene for 2 auditions

  • I completely disagree with you on this. The film is one of the most realistic stories ever i.m.h.o. Apart from the fact it is actually based on a true story (search google for the real swordfish) its best aspect is that is f*cks with the viewers sense of morality: the bad guy, the innocent killer, gets away. Sometimes in real life this is also the case.

  • You know what is ironic about this scene? That every thing the character states he hates about Hollywood is exactly what this film is. Lacks realism, plot, prose and is shit. "Unbelievable, unremarkable shit."

  • it's not too bad a movie. there's way worse out their...but I'll admit...this scene is probably the best thing that comes from this movie.

  • so true. BUT good scene tho.

  • I agree. From the intro, I actually thought it would be a good movie.

  • hte only part that lacks realism in a way is the hacking

  • Excellent speech....!

  • does anyone know what cigar / cutter / lighter he's using?

  • I Love this part in 0:54, as if Travolta is setting the focus in the camera that is filming, cameramen knows what exactly Im talking about.....

  • good observation!

  • what are you talking about? all i see is the camera go out of focus for a second.

  • well, when he twists the cigar one way it goes out of focus, then he twists it back and the focus comes back. so it's like the cigar controls the focus.

  • John Travolta is awesome man... this guy is so good at what he does & this intro proves that perfectly!... I liked his role in this movie.... basically just a stylish dude who got it all, money, girls and he knows what to get however it has to be captured.... !

  • No! Fuckyou bannabread... this movie was KICK-ASS AWESOME!

  • So Cool This Intro....Could be a tarentino.....Alas......!

  • I wish Travolta wasn't in that ridiculous religion.

  • in your world, IT IS REDICULOUS.

  • unless this speech was a commentary on the rest of the film (a negative foreshadowing, if you will), someone screwed up real bad. this is the only redeeming part, everything else is generic, unrealistic and just ridiculous.

  • I agree the rest of the movie sort of fades into the background, this scene was what made me go, "Oh, this will be good."

  • can someone PLEASE post the whole movie

  • But he wasent the bad guy!

  • From what I watched, he was. Though movies that play on TV over here are cut up pretty bad. If not him then who was the bad guy?

  • what i mean is that he was doing it for america - not himself.

sounds like a good guy to me.

  • oh that was john travolta? He got on my nerves so bad. >_> I don't really watch these kinds of movies but my cable is broken and all I could watch was local channels. was watching TBS and this movie came on and I got hooked. =_=;

He was getting annoying though, really.

  • i must admit.....this is one of my most fav 'speech' from hollywood movie after the 'vengeance' speech by samuel l jackson's in pulp fiction. great act by travolta.

  • Amazing film, loved it.

  • Gabriel and Snake Plissken would make a great team

  • Amazing movie.

  • could i do this as a monologue for auditions?

  • "He exists in a world beyond your world. What we only fantasize, he does. He lives a life where nothing is beyond him. But you know what? It's all a facade. For all his charm and charisma, his wealth, his expensive toys... he's a driven, unflinching, calculating machine. He takes what he wants, when he wants... and disappears."

  • Amazing scene. Brilliant movie.

  • nice film, but travolta's hair. c'mon hollywood, you can do better than that

  • Travolta's hair is like that because he is impersonating the Israeli terrorist (found in the wine cellar). At the end of the movie Travolta again changes face and acquires a new costume/hairstyle.

  • My favorite line: "Im not some grungy, wannabe film maker searching for exatensialism through a haze of bong smoke or something..."

  • it's your favorite scene? why, because you don't understand what existentialism is?

  • best scene of the movie

    BRILLIANT

  • I agree. I've memorized the just of this scene. I like the part when he said,"Realism: Not a pervasive element in Today's modern american cinematic vision". Very Intelligent scene.

  • He has a point you know, just look at 300, Shoot'em Up, and Windtalkers (Nic Cage killing six with one burst from his tommy-gun is a bit farfetched)

  • I really like this intro, but it's kind of flawed. Dog Day Afternoon was based on a true story. The screenwriter should have used something else as an example.

  • I think what Gabriel Shear is trying to say is that if Pacino's character wanted to 'get away with it,' and possibly could, why couldn't he do it?

  • You're right, but his first argument is that realism is non-existent in Hollywood cinema. Since John Wojtowicz (Sonny) didn't actually do that in real life, it means the movie was realistic in that sense.

This intro is very captivating, but it doesn't look like the writer (Skip Woods) knew much about their reference material.

  • True, I never really looked at it that way. So, what he's trying to say is that the closer Hollywood tries to get to realism, the farther away they get?

  • Travolta is a great actor. I like his performance in this movie.

  • Rich, cultivated and ressourceful ex-mossad agent, and philosopher!

  • Awesome movie, Travolta rocx. For once the bad guy wins..

  • ^^ true ,but john doe also won in se7en

  • 3 minutes of pure fucking talent!!!!!

  • Is Travolta a smoker???

and if he's not, How come a non-smoker do smoking? U have to get used to it.

    doesn't hurt him?

  • Its a cigar... he wont inhale.

  • who cares?

  • I always thought this was one of the best movie monologues/scenes ever.

  • Tarantino flashback anyone? Bloody copy-cat is what I say

  • This movie is a masterpiece. Not like the ones where the protagonist enters a room full of bad guys and shoots them all dead without sweating.

Good job on your character, John Travolta.

  • OMG travolta was phenomenal in this role. Not a phenomenal movie tho...but he is a very convincing bad guy

  • travolta is cool , look at his movements and face expressions when he checks the watch and when he said thanks for the coffee ( only cool guys do that )

  • My english is not very good.

Can anyone write the text to me?

I would like to do an text animation about this scene soon.

    thanks

  • hey, im sorry i only speak english but id like to see your video

  • course.

The animation will be in english. I'm planing to do a text animation like the pulp fiction one.

do a search here in youtube about this, and you will know what I'm talking about.

  • I love this scene =)

  • one of the best movie openings.... EVER!

  • men travolta is the ultimate bad guy take for example sean archer (castor troy) in face off

  • probably my favorite speech of all movies

  • Fuck. This is the best Travolta ever - this intro. Nothing like it - just the delivery. The charisma, the acting, the ruthlessness of this part of the script. Fuckin' magic. Classic. Goddamned classic.

  • like the intro!...You know what the problem with Hollywood is? They make shit. Unbelievable, unremarkable shit...

  • i like it...cool

  • one of the most real e great monologues i've ever seen/heard!
