a think this is one of her first movies being the lead! so she didnt had her character as marilyn the sexy breathy talkin yet! she was just begining, u can tell! its obvious its her voice! she didnt even had the special way of stare and gesture her face while she sings! like she does for example in gentlemen prefer blondes!
There's one song we have on record that was not dubbed, Happy Birthday Mr. President or am i wrong was she dubbed for that. i thought she did amazing, i know if i was prez i would have been very plzed
@tinman11201 No, sorry. It is her voice and anybody who knows what MM sounded like recognizes it. She was even begining to come down hard on her D's and T's (as Natasha Lytess drummed into her!) If she had been dubbed, we would have known by whom a very long time ago. Her voice is deeper throughout the film---she was not doing the "breathy" thing yet.
Precioso número musical y preciosa está Marilyn !! No entiendo, como despúes de esta película, aun siguieron dándole papeles secundarios y cortos, hasta protagonizar 4 años después "Niebla en el alma". Incomprensible !!
It's her voice. Pitched a bit lower than the tones she used at Fox. Although, her voice didn't get "babyish" till "Some Like It Hot" and "Let's Make Love." But...she always did her own singing. In fact, she fell in love with her musical coach on this film--who was very surprised by her vocal abilities.
@waif55 Marni Nixon dubbed some of her high notes in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (you can tell if you listen to the 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend' PRELUDE), but yes, Marilyn had amazing vocal abilities. I wonder whether she at least PARTIALLY dubbed in "The Prince and the Showgirl" (she had one solo) - there seems to be 2 schools of thought - but even if she was, the rest of her films (this one included) showcase her prowess as a chanteuse.
I've also read that Gloria Wood dubbed her partially in the films 'River of No Return' and 'Let's Make Love' - but if she did, the dubbing must have been minimal, like in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (just the notes that weren't within her range).
@Rapture1987 Sigh! Well no winning here. The only "high" notes were the "No, no, no, no...Nooooo!" at the begining of "Diamonds." I don't see that these were beyond her range, especially in a recording studio, where what she did could be amplified. I guess Lionel Newman, musical director at Fox lied when he said--years after Marilyn's death-- she never needed dubbing?
@waif55 I was talking about the "No, no, no" notes myself - that's why I referred to the 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend' PRELUDE (as in, the lead-in to the song). Marni Nixon is still alive and confirmed her dubbing assignment in this song (the studio initially wanted Nixon to dub all of Marilyn's singing, but Marni herself thought this was unnecessary). Lionel Newman probably meant that Marilyn didn't need dubbing the way stars like Deborah Kerr needed dubbing (Ms. Kerr for instance herself
admitted that her voice wasn't adequate for films like "The King and I" and "An Affair to Remember"). Fox studios, like others, have customarily hired singers to 'supplement' or 'augment' their actors' singing - for example, Leona Gordon helped Rita Moreno with some of her notes in "The King and I", and Charmian Carr's sister stepped in when one of the boys in "The Sound of Music" couldn't hit his high note in 'So Long, Farewell'. Even Ginger Rogers said she was once dubbed.
And the recording studios at the time couldn't work miracles - this is why Marilyn's friend Natalie Wood was dubbed in "West Side Story", even though Natalie filmed mostly to her own tracks and COULD in fact hit most of the high notes, but not in a way that did justice to the score.
@Rapture1987 Well, you seem a reasonable person. I am sensitive became theer seems to always be a rush to dismiss MM--her beauty (not natural!) Her singing (dubbed!) her talent (didn't have any!) I just don't see this level of criticism against other vintage stars, most of whom were as "manufactured" as MM--if not more. In any case, she did have an excellent voice.
@waif55 I know EXACTLY what you mean. I think a lot of ppl feel threatened by her superhuman qualities. On top of the type of dismissals that you listed, it also drives me nuts when her legacy is referred to as that of a 'sex symbol' (which to me is one of the most INCIDENTAL things about someone who, as an actress & singer, stole Ethel Merman's thunder, and knocked Lawrence Olivier off the screen). Marlon BRANDO is lucky that Lee Strasberg once mentioned him in the same sentence with her. :)
Does anyone out there know if the singing voice here is "all" MARILYN? The opening notes don't sound like her - and I know this was before her Years at FOX ~ and at COLUMBIA,
Stunning <3 !

Poor Marilyn , with that amateur-ish choreography she had nothing to do but sex it up... then later they blamed HER , ha
Go Marilyn go , some of us still understand.
