@tevlar I don't think they've lost their touch, really. There are some really solid RPGs this generation. Yggdra Union (PSP) which is a remake of a GBA game, but with added features, is excellent. Then you've got Eternal Sonata on the PS3, which is awesome, with a very unique battle system and absolutely wonderful music. And on the action front, you've got Demons/Dark Souls which are both wonderful. On SRPG front you've got Disgaea which is incredible as well. :)
And today's consumers, for some reason, value fancy graphics more than anything else.
Thus only very few companies, those who're not afraid of selling only very few copies, dare to make games the way that yesterday's consumers (we) enjoy it.
I think its also that developers only look at what games sell the most, and then produce 10 more games exactly like it dus making the game genre much narrower. Todays new gamers have much less variations of games to play then we had and dont get to experiance these kind of games. Nowadays its mostly about FPS, which to be honest havent changed much since Doom, yet people buy it.
Before the developers couldnt do all the fancy graphics so they concentrated more on story/music

There is a 4 also (Lufia & the Ruins of Lore) but you don't play as a descendant of Maxim and don't fight the Sinistrals so I don't count it as a part of the main series. There's also a remake of 2 for DS which is good and bad at the same time.

On screen enemies in dungeons, puzzles that are not always straight-forward, thw gorgeous soundtrack, I only hope that eventually the story will kick-in. I remember back when you could rent snes games and I discovered Lufia 2. I tried renting it a second time and whoever had it, kept renewing it for weeks. I still remember calling Rogers Video every 5 minutes (literally, the people that worked there were getting annoyed) and then being upset when they told me the person had renewed it.
This game rocked!!!! The soundtrack was wicked. I learned how to play the entire fortress of doom theme on guitar and still play it at least once every day!
The DS remake will be nothing like the original art style is a 3d almost like FF crystal chronicles (ds) and the chars have undergone horrible transformations when it comes to their looks, for instance maxim is no longer clad in blue and armor but a wife beater shirt leather jacket and baggy jeans. battle system is something also out of FFCC. and they dropped 50% of the content and puzzles are platforms with bring object A to point B. so if your expecting a masterpiece youll be disappointed.
@piscespeter3 FFFFFFFFFF- I just looked up a video for it and you're right. Why does Square-Enix insist on ruining peoples' fond childhood memories like this? Oh, right. I know why. Money. They know Lufia has a lot of nostalgic fans who will lap this crap up. Well not me! >:(
I need to write a letter to them. It would go something like "Dear Square-Enix: just stop. Sincerely, someone who is no longer a fan of your games, you money-grubbing whores. PS: Tell Cavia they suck too."
With all the graphics of today, I really love this game the most!
I played the dutch version many times, and got all the powerfull weapons from the ancient cave or whatever it is called in english:P (oude grot). And defeated the egg drake and stuff...
Lufia 2's gameplay is unparalleled in RPG's. The puzzles were extremely intelligent and they were found everywhere. The "see the monster, can use item to stop them" is the best encounter system ever.
The music is pure bliss and the characters are engaging and pretty deep for their time! I mean, who doesn't love Dekar or Aguro? Selan is the perfect wife (what other rpg make your hero have his wedding in the middle of the game? :P), and the love triangle with Tia is heart-breaking!

The main chorus at 0:23 sounds so complete. Makes me think of a long and meaningful adventure.

Lufia is by FAR my favorite series and Lufia 2 is my favorite game of all-time (I cry every single time I see the ending, even after 20+ times!!).
And if it's on DS and in a similar 2d-style + gameplay style as Lufia 2, I'll be in complete heaven!!
