@survivalistboards Decent movie, really to bad it ruined Ned Beatty's career because of this movie he never saw a decent role again. Much better actor than he was ever given credit for.
@JSErwine Not quite sure where you're getting your info, but Deliverance was Beatty's first movie, and he's made over 100 since then, He has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Emmy Awards, an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain and a Golden Globe Award; won a Drama Desk Award. If that's whats considered ruined, sign me up.
@kenstafford Perhaps I used the wrong choice of words, something like stunted his career would have been a better choice. The stigma attached to the guy because of the forest scene did not help him. To this day when people see him, that role is the first that cokes to their mind.
The essence and theme is captured exceptionally. If they could bottle chemistry like this, every movie would be a hit. Contrary to what people are posting on the net, this was not just a chance encounter with the film crew. The boy could not play a note but was picked for his looks. He was able to convey wordlessly to the audience the stereotypical, mentally deficient youngster many believe live in the deep south.
It`s impossible to predict if a scene is going to work or not. In this case, this is a classic; the actor who plays the boy and the way it was filmed worked perfectly.
Billy Redden (born 1956 in Rabun County, Georgia) is an American actor best known for his role as Lonnie, the banjo-playing boy, in the 1972 movie Deliverance.
Redden, then sixteen, earned his role in Deliverance during a casting call at Clayton Elementary School in Clayton, Georgia. To add authenticity and humor to the film, the filmmakers found Redden to fit the look of the inbred and mentally retarded banjo boy called for by the book, although Redden himself is neither. Google him....
This scene was filmed by accident. The young man with the banjo just happened to start chiming in with his banjo when the actor was just strumming his guitar as the whole film crew rested for a moment. The whole interaction, with the family and such, was not quite so much as staged but just happened.
The camera men knew a great scene was unfolding and recorded it while the actors fell into role and the mountain folk just went along with the moment.
@christiantt the actor Billy Redden could not play the banjo, A musician reached round from behind him. this nmakes the "Accidental" story very unlikely
@christiantt that's funny. shit like that has been happening in movies for years. the guitar smashing scene in animal house was just john belushi forgetting his line and out of mere stupidity smashing buddy's guitar.
@whitie1987Ned Beatty says to John Voight: "Talk about genetic deficiency, isn't that pitiful?" and the Mountaing man says" "Who's picking the banjo here?" Although the boy boy is clearly inbread, he picks a mean banjo...he may be geneticaly challeneged, but he he has a gift,....maybe his only one but he's the best....love this scene....xoxoa

this reminds me back when i was a kid, daddy taught us to shoot a gun, fight and do a lot of picken and grining ,he made us practice over and over and over and over.but he loved his banjo
Banjo dude hated Ned Beatty for some reason but liked Ronny Cox very much. To get banjo to react to Ronny the way he did, the director got Ned to appear from behind the house at that point. Have a look at that bit again - you will see everything come together.
Good observation. It was Ned's mouth that got him the comment from the man pumping the gas, "You don't know nothin.". That man knew, and Banjo also sensed Ned's disdain for the "genetic defects".
