its a shame suzuki never revisited the rotary engine, can you imagine the redline on one if those if it continued to evolve and become their flagship super bike engine?!?!?! and on top of that, if it was turbo charged?! it would make the hayabusa just look like a fat pig.
If they could have done something to drastically improve gas mileage, in my opinion that's what really kills this bike. It sounds cool and is fun to ride but 20mpg is just not acceptable on a bike. My fuel light comes on at about 60 miles, then I run out about a mile later and need to switch to reserve.
You of course know what it means when you can kick start that easily a RE5???? Rotor is cook and there is not enough compression... Sorry to rain on the parade but this was the way to check if the bike was good or not ...
lmaoz . r u kiddin ? its so simple . well not tat i m a pro . but if u juz study all the components n c how they work , it is pretty much simple . its juz adding the turbo part that is a bit complicating . well i mean how its connected .
Wankels suffer from wear in the rotor tips which equates to piston rings in a normal piston engine. 70s wankels had inferior materials in the tips causing loss of compression, power loss and oil burning. Mazda is the only large scale company producing a wankel engine although they sorted the tip issue successfully. I had a go in an RX-8 the engine is very small and fairly simple. About the size of a rolled up sleeping bag. It has turbine like smoothness. I like wankels.
I had one of those that a buddy gave me...However the motor had a busted Apex seal and water got in to the rotor and egg shaped it and seized it tight.
I never got it running but sure would have liked to.
I had a black RE-5, same style as that one. A mechanic friend of mine said the exhaust sounded like 'popcorn farts'. Really a pretty ugly bike. I bought one as a leftover brand new for $1600 in 1976. Now a good clean one is probably worth a lot more. Quite a bike - and usually nearly impossible to kickstart.
Yes, it's a Wankel. NSU engine which puts out 62hp at 16,500 rpm. Made four years, from 1974-1977. They have been known to explode if not maintained properly!

BS! I own 2 and was a Suzuki tech/service manager, and I could kick start them no problem, new/well broke in/ worn out. It just takes a man!

What's the Max RPM of the RE-5 as Rotaries rev a lot higher
crompton33001 1 year ago
@crompton33001 The re5 redlines only at 7000rpm, seems pretty low but that's it

@tom93r1 does it have fd low dwn torque?

I have never been able to kickstart mine.
What's your secret?
konstrukt666 2 years ago
Shoot, I don't know. My roommate did it and I haven't been able to replicate the amazing feat. I think he kick started it 3 or 4 times that night.

Well old Kawis and Especially Ducatis look cool , Most Japanese bikes really didn't look too good until the 85 GSXR came out

sucha unique exhaust note coming from the Wankel, it sounds like nothing else

I agree with pencon61......
nswiss1975 2 years ago
But is it really that much uglier than your average 70's Japanese bike?
tom93r1 2 years ago
cool motor but very ugly bike

Explode? never heard that one before! lol
Any way, its actually 6,500 rpm. Somehow nearly every source on the internet got it wrong and added an extra 10,000
