unfortunately like most court procedures in movies this one is wildly illegal, objections aren't noted then ignored, they are either sustained or overruled. you can't just say "yeah we get you object but fuck you we are going to ignore it and do what we want anyway....cuz this is mississippi"
This movie inspired me to be a film maker. I have a huge list of favorite movies, this is #1. Everything from Mann's directing to the "loose style" cinematography, audio mixing, music everything. I agree one of the most underrated films and one of the best scenes here.
@SelectiveINfusion Like Mike Myers response to Alice Cooper and his knowledge of the history of Milwaukee in Wayne's World, "I was not aware of that." I'll change the title. Thanks :)
One of the best scenes in "any" movie! Everett McGill is awesome. Another great scene can be found between the 130-140th minute with Christopher Plummer owning another scene!
@smo0o0oke1 Law students actually do see this scene. I saw it in my first year of law school. It's pure gold...and it helps one understand the difference between a deposition and trial. And it's just badass, which all law students need to learn.
this scene fascinates me, sometimes there is a moment where you a momentarily stunned by a man's sheer passion and power in a role. McGill pulls that off here, controlling his rage enough to channel his oratory skill and ambition into a few well delivered lines of speech. Great scene. Great film.
What I love about this scene is it's a "feel good" moment without being anything like a corny Michael Bay movie. Gives me goosebumps every time I see this.
The reason this scene is so great is clear. Russel Crowe is getting beaten around like a rag doll for the whole movie and finally his attorney stands up and knocks the shit out of the big bad tobacco company.
I like how the camera disappears from over the shoulder at 1:53 - 1:55.
Masterful directing and camera work and editing, seamless; un-noticeable; un-glaring. Just one of the many, many, many reasons why this is one of the best movies ever made in the last 100 years , with no exaggeration. No small wonder there are people still discovering it for the first time. I notice some new aspect or shading each time I see it.
Michael Mann said in an interview that Bruce McGill had recently had surgery before filming this scene, and had stitches in his stomach.
Mann said McGill screamed so loud, take after take, that he tore the stitches in his stomach and had to go back to the hospital.

@TheNitroG1 This was not a trial (do you see a judge in this scene)? It was a public deposition. Who was going to overrule or sustain the objections?

Actually, this was not Jeffrey's attorney. He was the Mississippi's assistant state attorney. This is one of my favorite films.
